The in uence of deuterium annealing on the evolution of interface trap capture cross sections under channel-hot-electron and Fowler-Nordheim stresses was investigated. We found that the amount of the variation in the capture cross section was reduced by deuterium annealing under both electrical stresses. Possible mechanisms of this phenomenon were discussed, and the improved reliability of transition SiOx layer (x : 0 { 2) near the interface by deuterium annealing was thought to be the major reason for our observations.

Background: Portal vein thrombosis (PVT) is a surgical challenge in liver transplantation (LTx). Presence of PVT was considered as a contraindication for LTx in some centers due to the controversy revolving around the long term outcome of these patients. Therefore, we studied the long term outcome of adult patients with PVT in LTx in a tertiary institution with specialized transplantation unit. Methods: There were 570 cases of adult liver transplantation between 2004 and 2009 in our institution. We excluded 99 cases of deceased donor liver transplantations to facilitate incidence, outcome and surgical management. There were 56 patients with existing PVT before 471 living donor liver transplantations. Patients with PVT were divided into 2 groups according to Yerdal`s classification, mild PVT group (Yerdel group 1 & 2) 43 cases and severe PVT group (Yerdel group 3 & 4) 13 cases. Results: Patients with PVT constituted 11.8% (n=56) in our cohort. When comparing between patients without and with PVT, we did not find statistical difference in terms of age, gender, Child-Pugh score, MELD score & indication for LTx (benign vs malignancy). Rate of PV complication was 3.4% in the non-PVT group and 8.9% in PVT group (p=0.047). Duration of operation and total amount of blood transfusion were also comparable between two groups. The overall survival of PVT group was not significantly different compared to the non-PVT group (p=0.059). Demographics of 43 cases of mild PVT (76.7%) and 13 cases of severe PVT (23.3%) were not different except in severe PVT group had more malignancy cases (27 cases vs 2 cases, p=0.011). The median overall survival of mild PVT group is comparable with non-PVT group (p=0.059) and the median overall survival of severe PVT group is 32 months (1-88) and non-PVT group is 41 months (1-93) (p=0.066). 5-year survival rate of severe PVT is about 60%. Conclusions: Existing PVT prior to liver transplantation does not lead to poorer long term outcome. However in severe cases, we need more careful approach. Therefore, PVT should not be a contraindication to liver transplantation.

The Swedish mutation (K595N/M596L) of amyloid precursor protein (APP-swe) has been known to increase abnormal cleavage of cellular APP by Beta-secretase (BACE), which causes tau protein hyperphosphorylation and early-onset Alzheimer`s disease (AD). Here, we analyzed the effect of APP-swe in global gene expression using deep transcriptome sequencing technique. We found 283 genes were down-regulated and 348 genes were up-regulated in APP-swe expressing H4-swe cells compared to H4 wild-type cells from a total of approximately 74 million reads of 38 base pairs from each transcriptome. Two independent mechanisms such as kinase and phosphatase signaling cascades leading hyperphosphorylation of tau protein were regulated by the expression of APP-swe. Expressions of catalytic subunit as well as several regulatory subunits of protein phosphatases 2A were decreased. In contrast, expressions of tau-phosphorylating glycogen synthase kinase 3β (GSK-3β), cyclin dependent kinase 5 (CDK5), and cAMP-dependent protein kinase A (PKA) catalytic subunit were increased. Moreover, the expression of AD-related Aquaporin 1 and presenilin 2 expression was regulated by APP-swe. Taken together, we propose that the expression of APP-swe modulates global gene expression directed to AD pathogenesis. [BMB reports 2010; 43(10): 704-709]

<P>Cu(In,Ga)Se<SUB>2</SUB> (CIGS) solar cells fabricated on soda-lime glass (SLG) exhibited high efficiency due to the supply of Na from the SLG substrate. As a simple doping method, Na can be supplied into CIGS films using a Na compound deposited on Mo electrodes. In this study, the authors compared the properties of CIGS thin films grown on a NaF layer deposited on Mo-coated Na-free glass with those of CIGS films on Mo-coated SLG by a standard through high-resolution transmission electron microscopy and low-temperature photoluminescence analyzes. After NaF deposition on the Mo film, an amorphous interlayer was detected at the CIGS/MoSe<SUB>2</SUB> interface, and the MoSe<SUB>2</SUB> layer that formed on the Mo surface was thin. The photoluminescence study showed that NaF doping did not effectively prevent the formation of deep donors in the CIGS film, whereas Na supplied by SLG effectively prevents their formation. We concluded that the poor performance of CIGS solar cells incorporating a NaF precursor is due to the amorphous layer at the CIGS/Mo interface and different luminescence characteristic with standard CIGS films, resulting in a low minority carrier collection.</P>
HCC : O-048 ; Laparoscopic liver resection for T1 and T2 hepatocellular carcinoma

Background: Laparoscopic liver resection has gained much popularity in recent years, but relatively few centers have performed laparoscopic hepatectomies in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) patients due to the technical difficulties. We now present our early experience with laparoscopic liver resection in HCC performed in a single institution. Methods: From January 2008 until February 2011, total 761 patients of hepatectomy was done and we excluded TNM stage 3, tumors over 5cm and location of tumors of segment I, VII, VIII. 84 laparoscopic liver resections were performed and open conversion was 13 cases (15.4%). To reduce selection bias we made a propensity case matching and selected 50 pairs of each operation group. Results: The cause of open conversion were bleeding for 7 cases, inability to find a mass for 3 cases, severe adhesion for 2 cases and tumor margin for 1 case. Preoperative variables of each group were comparable. The length of hospital stay was shorter in laparoscopic resection group than open resection group. (9.5 days vs 13.2 days, p=0.018) Disease free survival was not different with each group and overall survival was also comparable. 3 year disease free survival in laparoscopic resection group was 35.3% and open resection group was 51.6%. (p=0.409) 3 year survival rate in laparoscopic resection group was 81.3% and open resection group was 90.2%. (p=0.590) Conclusions: Laparoscopic liver resection for HCC can be a feasible and safe operative method in early stage HCC. To draw a final conclusion, randomized control study and long term follow up is needed.

The ethanol extracts from bark of red pine, Pinus densiflora Siebold et Zuccarini, was examined for single-dose and seven-day repeated-dose toxicity with Sprague-Dawley rats. The single oral dose of the extracts at 5000 ㎎/㎏ did not produce mortality or abnormal gross appearance of the internal organs of rats. In seven-day repeated-dose toxicity study, the extracts administered at doses of 100, 1000, or 5000 ㎎/㎏ for 7 days. There were no significant changes of body weights and organ weights during the experimental period. Hematological analysis and clinical blood chemistry have no revealed toxicity effect of the ethanol extracts from bark of Pinus densiflora. Pathologically, neither gross abnormalities nor histopathological changes observed between controls and treated rats both sexes. Collectively, these data suggest that the ethanol extracts from bark of Pinus densiflora have a high margin of safety.
