Abstract: In this study, mechanical properties of commercial carbon fibers were evaluated using a single filament tensile test with various fiber gauge lengths. Tensile strength increased significantly with a decreasing length of the test specimens possibly due to small defect sites. The compliance method provided more accurate moduli of the carbon fibers, removing system errors during the single filament tensile test. The Weibull modulus revealed that shorter specimens had an inhomogeneous defect distribution, leading to a higher tensile strength and its standard deviation. X-ray diffractograms of carbon fibers showed a similar crystallinity and orientation in spite of significant differences in the fiber modulus and strength, indicating that crystalline structure of the commercial carbon fibers used in the study was not attributable to the difference in their tensile properties.

<▼1><▼1><P><I>Tremella fuciformis</I> Berk (TFB) prevent LPS-mediated inflammation by inhibition of NF-κB and MAPKs pathways.</P></▼1><▼2><P><I>Tremella fuciformis</I> Berk (TFB) has long been used as a traditional medicine in Asia. Although TFB exhibits antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects, the mechanisms of action responsible have remained unknown. We confirmed the anti-inflammatory effects of <I>Tremella fuciformis</I> Berk extract (TFE) in RAW 264.7 cells and observed significantly suppressed LPS-induced iNOS/NO and COX-2/PGE2 production. TFE also suppressed LPS-induced IKK, IkB, and p65 phosphorylation, as well as LPS-induced translocation of p65 from the cytosol. Additionally, TFE inhibited LPS-induced phosphorylation of MAPKs. In an acute inflammation study, oral administration of TFE significantly inhibited LPS-induced IL-1β, IL-6 and TNF-α production and iNOS and COX-2 expression. The major bioactive compounds from TFB extract were identified as gentisic acid, protocatechuic acid, 4-hydroxybenzoic acid, and coumaric acid. Among these compounds, protocatechuic acid showed the strongest inhibitory effects on LPS-induced NO production in RAW 264.7 cells. Overall, these results suggest that TFE is a promising anti-inflammatory agent that suppresses iNOS/NO and COX-2/PGE2 expression, as well as the NF-κB and MAPK signaling pathways.</P></▼2></▼1>
Experimental Study of Discharge Coefficient with Non-Circular Effervescent Type Twin-fluid Nozzle

An experimental study was carried out to investigate the injection characteristics of non-circular effervescent type twin-fluid nozzles. For this purpose, two types of non-circular nozzles (E1, E2) and one kind of circular nozzle (C) were used. Two types of nozzles were machined with similar area of exit orifice. Three types of aerorators with hole diameters of 1.2, 1.7 and 2.1 mm were used. Each aerorator has a total of 12 holes. It is expressed as Area ratio which is ratio of exit orifice area and aerorator hole area. At this time, the aerorator mounted on the nozzle used three different diameters to match the aspect ratio with the nozzle exit area. Therefore, experiments were performed according to three aspect ratios for each nozzle, and total experiments were conducted. Experiments were carried out by controlling the amount of air flowing after fixing the flow rate of the liquid, and then the nozzle internal pressure and the droplet size (SMD) were measured. The jet image was taken from the nozzles. The discharge coefficients of the three kinds of nozzles were compared with the conventional equation and the Jedelsky’s equation, and the Jedelsky’s equation was found to be about 4 times larger. In addition, empirical formula based on ALR, which is the largest variable in Jedelsky’s equation, was derived, and it was confirmed that the coefficient is almost the same regardless of the exit orifice type. SMD injected from the nozzle was confirmed to be smaller in the non-circular shape than in the circular shape, which is expected to be caused by the difference of the discharge coefficient values.

미국선녀벌레[Metcalfa pruinosa (Say, 1830)]는 북미 원산 해충으로 2009년 3개 시군에서 공식적으로 확인된 후, 2016년 60개 시군으로 급격히 분포지역이 확대된 침입 해충이다. 이들은 기주범위가 넓고, 산림지 방제의 어려움 등으로 발생밀도가 증가하여 단감원을 비롯한 농작물 재배지에 큰 피해를 주고 있다. 단감 포장에서 미국선녀벌레의 발생 시기와 밀도 및 분포를 조사하기 위해 포장내 30개 지점에 끈끈이트랩을 설치하였고, 유입 및 유출 패턴을 조사하기 위해 포장주위에 약 15~20m 간격으로 끈끈이트랩을 설치하여 10일 간격으로 조사하였다. 단감포장 내에서 5월 중순부터 약충이, 7월부터 성충이 발생하였으며 성충의 발생 최성기는 8월 중순이었다. 유출입 패턴은 5월 하순에 유입이 가장 많았고, 8월 중순이후 성충의 유출이 관찰되었고, 포장내로 산란을 위해 유입되는 개체도 관찰할 수 있었다.
Salt and pepper appearance of the skin associated with mixed connective tissue disease

The salt-and-pepper appearance of skin is composed of salt (vitiligo-like depigmentation) and pepper(perifollicular pigmentation). This characteristic feature can be a clinical clue for the diagnosis of systemic sclerosis. Mixed connective tissue disease(MCTD) is a distinct disease entity with mixed features of systemic lupus erythematosus, systemic sclerosis, myositis and rheumatoid arthritis with high titers of antibodies to U1 small nuclear ribonucleoprotein(U1 snRNP). Therefore, MCTD is known to have a wide spectrum of cutaneous manifestations which may be the presenting signs of the disease. However, there are few reports of pigmentary changes in MCTD. A 51-year old woman presented with variably sized hypopigmented macules along with relative hyperpigmentation of the perifollicular areas. She was diagnosed with MCTD by Raynaud’s phenomenon and high titer anti-RNP corresponding to a speckled antinuclear antibody of 1:1280 in Rheumatology clinic. A biopsy specimen showed dermal sclerosis. Pigment loss and melanophages were observed in the papillary dermis. Hypo- and hyperpigmentation were confirmed histologically by S100 and Fontana-Masson stain. To our knowledge, ‘salt and pepper appearance of the skin’ has rarely been reported in MCTD. The diagnosis of MCTD can be challenging due to its diverse characteristics. Therefore, we suggest that MCTD should be regarded as a differential diagnosis in patient with this pigmentary change.

이동성 해충인 벼 멸구류를 조사하기 위해 우리나라를 포함한 아시아지역 12개국 13기관에서 농촌진흥청 아시아식량작물협력협의체(AFACI) 프로그램의 일환으로 “아시아지역 이동성 병해충 국제협력 네트워크 구축”프로젝트를 수행하고 있다. 본 연구에서는 벼 멸구류 및 거미류 의 포장 발생 실태를 파악하기 위해 2016년부터 2018년까지 경남 밀양, 전남 신안, 전북 완주지역의 무농약 논포장에서 6월말부터 9월말까지 점착트랩을 이용한 타락법으로 멸구류 발생 상황을 조사하였다. 2018년도에 애멸구는 7월 중순 이후에 밀도가 높아졌고, 흰등멸구는 신안지역에서 8월 이후에 밀도가 증가하기 시작하였다. 벼멸구는 모두 지역에서 발견되지 않았다. 거미류는 모든 지역에서 후반기로 갈수록 개체수가 증가하고, 9월 초순에 가장 많이 발생하였다.

Bart’s syndrome is a rare hereditary mechanobullous disorder, first described by Bart et al in 1966. It is characterized by clinical manifestations: aplasia cutis congenita (ACC) over the lower extremities, epidermolysis bullosa (EB), and nail abnormalities. Previous genetic study revealed glycine substitution mutation in type VII collagen gene (COL7A1) indicated that Bart’s syndrome is a clinical variant of dominant dystrophic EB. The patient was a 1-day-old male newborn who presented with well-demarcated absence of skin over both lower extremities and erosive patches with blisters on nostril, lip, and hand since birth. He was born by Cesarean section at the 37th weeks of gestation. There was no family history of genetic disorder. There was no systemic involvement such as pyloric atresia, renal abnormalities, or arthrogryposis. Histopathologic findings from blister on hand showed subepidermal blister formation, and electron microscopy showed separation of below lamina densa layer. We performed mutation analysis of 118 exons of COL7A1. These result disclosed two novel heterogenous frameshift mutations (c.3841_3843delGGTinsTGGGG in exon 31 and c.8109_81014delGGTGAG in exon 109). Therefore, he was diagnosed as Bart’s syndrome with recessive dystrophic EB. Herein, we report a very rare case of Bart' syndrome which is clinical variant of recessive dystrophic EB, and review genetic mutation in this syndrome.
A case of tinea corporis superimposed on porokeratosis ptychotrophica

A 58-year-old male presented to the outpatient department for evaluation of pruritic oozing patches in the buttock of 8 years’ duration. Physical examination revealed multiple hyperkeratotic erythematous to brownish plaques with well-demarcated hyperkeratotic prominent margins. Direct smear was done on the lesions to rule out superficial fungal infection, in which the result was positive, and topical antifungal agent was prescribed. However, although the lesions`` oozing and scales seen initially had partially subsided, no satisfactory improvemetns were observed in the 4 months’ follow-up period. Therefore skin biopsy was performed. A biopsy of a lesion revealed focal parakeratosis with disappearance of the granular layer beneath and cornoid lamella. On the basis of clinical and histologic findings, the diagnsos of porokeratotis ptychotropica (PP) was made. Porokeratosis (PK) is a disorder of keratinization characterized by well-demarcated annular lesions. Classically, several variants of PK have been described. When they involve the perianal and gluteal regions, they are referred to as PP, meaning PK with flexural involvement. In our case, due to the superimposed superficial fungal infection, the correct diagnosis and treatment were consequently delayed. We report this case because only a few cases of PP have been previously reported.
