Purpose: This study investigated the effects of hyaluronic acid (HA) on peri-implant clinical variables and crevicular concentrations of the proinflammatory biomarkers interleukin (IL)-1β and tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α in patients with peri-implantitis. Methods: A randomized controlled trial was conducted in peri-implantitis patients. Patients were randomized to receive a 0.8% HA gel (test group), an excipient-based gel (control group 1), or no gel (control group 2). Clinical periodontal variables and marginal bone loss after 0, 45, and 90 days of treatment were assessed. IL-1β and TNF-α levels in crevicular fluid were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays at baseline and after 45 days of treatment. Clustering analysis was performed, considering the possibility of multiple implants in a single patient. Results: Sixty-one patients with 100 dental implants were assigned to the test group, control group 1, or control group 2. Probing pocket depth (PPD) was significantly lower in the test group than in both control groups at 45 days (control 1: 95% CI, -1.66, -0.40 mm; control 2: 95% CI, -1.07, -0.01 mm) and 90 days (control 1: 95% CI, -1.72, -0.54 mm; control 2: 95% CI, -1.13, -0.15 mm). There was a trend towards less bleeding on probing in the test group than in control group 2 at 90 days (P=0.07). Implants with a PPD ≥5 mm showed higher levels of IL-1β in the control group 2 at 45 days than in the test group (P=0.04). Conclusions: This study demonstrates for the first time that the topical application of a HA gel in the peri-implant pocket and around implants with peri-implantitis may reduce inflammation and crevicular fluid IL-1β levels.

1953 년, 한국전쟁은 평화협정에 이르지 못한 채 정전협정을 체결함으로써 중단되었다. 그 해 7 월 27 일 판문점에서 남북의 합의 하에 정전협정이 체결되어 적대관계를 끝낸 것이다. 전문가들은 냉전시대를 통틀어 가장 힘들고 복잡했던 협상 과정 중 하나로 UN 군, 중공 및 북한 간 정전회담을 꼽고 있다. 당사국 간 문화 및 언어적 차이가 수시로 큰 걸림돌이었는데다가, 평화와 이해에 전혀 도움되지 않는 적대감까지 더해졌었다. 이런 복잡한 상황속에서 통역사는 소통의 문제를 해결하는 데 중요한 역할을 했다. 기록에 따르면 통역사 대부분은 전문적인 정식교육이나 경험이 없었고 서로 다른 지리적 문화적 배경을 지닌 채 협상에 참여했었다. 본 논문은 정전협정 때와 그 이후 군사정전위원회에서 통역사가 수행했던 역할을 기술한다. 판문점과 같은 무력분쟁 협상에서 통역사의 위치를 분석함으로써 통역학에서 보통 간과되어 왔던 다음의 구체적 문제를 조명할 수 있다. 이는 주로 구술언어의 동력(Cronin 2002), 환경에 따른 제약(Angelelli, 2004) 그리고 판문점과 같은 실제 무력분쟁의 해결상황에서 벌어지는 면대면 언어학적 중재에 관한 것이다.

The genus Paxillus is characterized by the difficulty of species identification, which results in reproducibility problems, as well as the need for large quantities of fungal inoculum. In particular, studies of Paxillus ammoniavirescens have reported divergent results in the in vitro growth while little is known of its capacity to degrade organic matter. For all the above, and assuming that this variability could be due to an inappropriate culture media, the aim of this study was to analyse growth in different culture media (MMN, MS, and 1/2 MS) and in the case of MMN in presence/absence of two types of organic matter (fresh litter and senescence litter) to probe the saprophytic ability of P. ammoniavirescens. We also evaluated the effects of pH changes in the culture media. Growth kinetics was assessed by weekly quantification of the area of growth in solid culture media over 5 wk, calculating the growth curves and inflection points of each culture media. In addition, final biomass after 5 wk in the different culture media was calculated. Results showed that best culture media are MS and 1/2 MS. Moreover, an improvement in growth in culture media containing decomposing fall litter was observed, leading to confirm differences in the culture media of this species with others of the same genus. Further, we established that all growth media suffered a significant acidification after fungal growth.

Cinchona officinalis, known locally as cascarilla or cinchona, is a plant species native to SouthAmerica. It was used as a source of quinine to combat malaria in the 17th century. The spe-cies is threatened by various anthropogenic activities. Further, the propagation of the spe-cies depends on seed dispersal and its germination capacity. Therefore, it is necessary toconserve and propagate this species. BecauseC. officinalisseeds have a low germinationcapacity, we determined the effect of arbuscular mycorrhizae (AM) on their germination andgrowth. A randomized design was employed with two treatments, one treated with mycor-rhizae (CM) and another without mycorrhizae (SM). For each treatment, three replicates of100 seeds were used. Germination, growth, and fungal characteristics were evaluated. In ger-mination parameters, the CM treatment showed better performance, but the improvementwas statistically insignificant. However, the application of AM significantly improved seedlingheight (cm), root length (cm), leaf area (cm2), and root number by 53.52, 28.72, 29.73, and61.66%, respectively. Likewise, mycorrhization intensity (%), mycorrhization frequency (%),and extraradical mycelium length (cm) in the CM treatment were 37.13, 3.44, and 174.97%higher compared to the SM treatment, respectively. Therefore, the use of AM fungi provesto be advantageous in the propagation ofC. officinalis, and these results provide a basis forthe largescale and sustainable propagation of this species.
Magnetic Resonance Myocardial Feature Tracking in Transfusion-Dependent Myelodysplastic Syndrome

BACKGROUND: Myocardial deformation with echocardiography allows early detection of systolic dysfunction and is related to myocardial iron overload (MIO) determined by T2* in hereditary anemias under transfusion support. Our aim was to analyze the diagnostic and prognostic usefulness of magnetic resonance feature tracking (MR-FT) myocardial strain in low-risk myelodysplastic syndromes (LR-MDS) patients. METHODS: Prospective study in transfusion-dependent LR-MDS patients and healthy controls who underwent a cardiac MR-FT. We analyzed the relationships between strain MR-FT and iron overload parameters and its prognostic impact in cardiovascular events and/or death. RESULTS: Thirty-one patients and thirteen controls were included. MIO (T2* < 20 ms) was detected in 9.7% of patients. Left ventricular global longitudinal strain (LV-GLS) by MR-FT was pathological (> −19.3%) in 32.3% of patients. Less negative strain values correlated with lower T2* (R = −0.37, p = 0.033) and native myocardial T1 (R = −0.39, p = 0.031) times. LV-GLS by MR-FT was significantly associated with higher incidence of the combined cardiovascular events and/or all-cause death (p = 0.047), with a cut-off value of −17.7% for predicting them (63% sensitivity and 81% specificity, area under the curve = 0.69). After adjusting analysis including demographic, biomarkers and imaging variables, a higher LV-GLS value by MR-FT remained as predictor of combined event in transfusion-dependent LR-MDS patients (hazard ratio, 0.4; confidence interval, 0.15–0.98; p = 0.045). CONCLUSIONS: Longitudinal myocardial strain by MR-FT in LR-MDS patients is associated to MIO and correlates with adverse events in the follow-up, what could serve as a prognostic tool.
Controversial Messages on Cancer

A direct connection between certain lifestyle factors and an increased risk of cancer has already been established. Despite well-documented associations, controversial messages on causes of cancer often appear without taking into consideration their impact on the general population. While mainstream coverage of cancer research is clearly welcome, consideration must be given to the risk of transmitting provocative messages with serious negative consequences for cancer research and public health. We must avoid becoming a breeding ground for the misinterpretation of scientific information. Polemical results can stimulate scientific research and progress, but controversial messages encourage confusion and impotence in an increasingly disoriented population. The correct communication of health messages is at least as important as research on risk factors.

Rutin Prevents LTA Induced Oxidative Changes in H9c2 Cells

Lipoteichoic acid (LTA), a component of Gram-positive bacteria cell walls is involved in infective endocarditis (IE), a life-threatening disease. We evaluated for the first time, whether flavonoid rutin (quercetin-3-rutinoside) can block LTA-induced pro-inflammatory response and reactive oxygen species (ROS) production, and reduction of antioxidant enzymes. We found that rutin suppresses LTA effects on the antioxidant enzymes superoxide dismutase, catalase, and glutathione peroxidase, as well as the pro-inflammatory enzyme cyclooxygenase-2, preventing phosphorylation of the mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPKs), p38, and c-Jun N-terminal kinase, and the increase of ROS production induced by LTA. Taken together, these findings suggest that rutin prevents oxidative damage, inflammation, and MAPKs activation induced by LTA. Rutin may exert a protective effect in IE. These data provide novel insights for future use of rutin to prevent the mechanisms of LTA-related pathogenesis, inflammatory processes, and antioxidant enzyme levels in diseases such as IE.
