Diversity-oriented synthesis of quinazoline derivatives using zirconium tetrakis(dodecylsulfate) [Zr(DS)4] as a reusable Lewis acid-surfactant-combined catalyst in tap water

        Hamid Reza Safaei,Mohsen Shekouhy,Shima Khademi,Vahid Rahmanian,Maryam Safaei 한국공업화학회 2014 Journal of Industrial and Engineering Chemistry Vol.20 No.5

A highly efficient and environmentally benign procedure for the synthesis of quinazoline derivatives via the condensation of carbonyl compounds with 2-aminobenzamide using zirconium tetrakis(dodecyl-sulfate) [Zr(DS)4] as a highly efficient, reusable Lewis acid-surfactant-combined catalyst is described. A broad range of substrates including aldehydes and ketones are successfully condensed with 2-aminobenzamide and all reactions are completed in short times and the products are obtained in good to excellent yields. The catalyst could be recycled and reused several times without any loss of efficiency. Moreover, presented procedure has been applied successfully for the synthesis of spiro-quinazolinones and fused ring-quinazolinone derivatives.

CuI Nanoparticles as New, Efficient and Reusable Catalyst for the One-pot Synthesis of 1,4-Dihydropyridines

Safaei-Ghomi, Javad,Ziarati, Abolfazl,Teymuri, Raheleh Korean Chemical Society 2012 Bulletin of the Korean Chemical Society Vol.33 No.8

A simple one-pot synthesis of two derivatives of 1,4-dihydropyridines has been described under reflux conditions using copper iodide nanoparticles (CuI NPs) as a catalyst in high yields. This method demonstrated four-component coupling reactions of aldehydes and ammonium acetate via two pathways. In one route, the reaction was performed using 2 eq ethyl acetoacetate while in the other one 1 eq ethyl acetoacetate and 1 eq malononitrile were used. The CuI NPs was reused and recycled without any loss of activity and product yield. It is noteworthy to state that wide range of the 1,4-dihydropyridines have attracted large interest due to pharmacological and biological activities.

      • Non-classical plate model for single-layered graphene sheet for axial buckling

        Safaei, Babak,Khoda, Farzad Hamed,Fattahi, A.M. Techno-Press 2019 Advances in nano research Vol.7 No.4

In this work, the effect of size on the axial buckling behavior of single-layered graphene sheets embedded in elastic media is studied. We incorporate Eringen's nonlocal elasticity equations into three plate theories of first order shear deformation theory, higher order shear deformation theory, and classical plate theory. The surrounding elastic media are simulated using Pasternak and Winkler foundation models and their differences are evaluated. The results obtained from different nonlocal plate theories include the values of Winkler and Pasternak modulus parameters, mode numbers, nonlocal parameter, and side lengths of square SLGSs. We show here that axial buckling behavior strongly depends on modulus and nonlocal parameters, which have different values for different mode numbers and side lengths. In addition, we show that in different nonlocal plate theories, nonlocality is more influential in first order shear deformation theory, especially in certain range of nonlocal parameters.

TEMPO-mediated aerobic oxidation of alcohols using copper(II) complex of bis(phenol) di-amine ligand as biomimetic model for Galactose oxidase enzyme

        Safaei, E.,Hajikhanmirzaei, L.,Karimi, B.,Wojtczak, A.,Cotic, P.,Lee, Y.I. Pergamon Press 2016 Polyhedron Vol.106 No.-

Mononuclear copper complexes of four-dentate N2O2 bis(phenol) diamine ligands (H2LNEX X: C and OB in which C and OB are chloro and tert-butyl-methoxy substituents on phenol groups) have been synthesized and characterized by IR, UV-Vis, single crystal X-ray diffraction, magnetic susceptibility studies and cyclic voltammetry techniques. The CuLNEX complexes show the square pyramid geometry of the coordination sphere with the copper centers surrounded by two nitrogen and oxygen atoms from the coordinating ligand and an axially bound water molecule. The effective magnetic moments of 1.7 and 1.8 BM confirm a monomer complex with copper(II) center. Electrochemical oxidation of these complexes yielded the corresponding Cu(II)-phenoxyl radical species. In addition, CuLNEX complexes, have shown efficient catalytic activities for TEMPO-mediated oxidation of a set of alcohols to the corresponding aldehydes in the presence of molecular oxygen as oxidant at room temperature. Healthcare Systems and COVID-19 Mortality in Selected OECD Countries: A Panel Quantile Regression Analysis

        Safaei Jalil,Saliminezhad Andisheh 대한예방의학회 2023 예방의학회지 Vol.56 No.6

Objectives: The pandemic caused by coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has exerted an unprecedented impact on the health of populations worldwide. However, the adverse health consequences of the pandemic in terms of infection and mortality rates have varied across countries. In this study, we investigate whether COVID-19 mortality rates across a group of developed nations are associated with characteristics of their healthcare systems, beyond the differential policy responses in those countries. Methods: To achieve the study objective, we distinguished healthcare systems based on the extent of healthcare decommodification. Using available daily data from 2020, 2021, and 2022, we applied quantile regression with non-additive fixed effects to estimate mortality rates across quantiles. Our analysis began prior to vaccine development (in 2020) and continued after the vaccines were introduced (throughout 2021 and part of 2022).Results: The findings indicate that higher testing rates, coupled with more stringent containment and public health measures, had a significant negative impact on the death rate in both pre-vaccination and post-vaccination models. The data from the post-vaccination model demonstrate that higher vaccination rates were associated with significant decreases in fatalities. Additionally, our research indicates that countries with healthcare systems characterized by high and medium levels of decommodification experienced lower mortality rates than those with healthcare systems involving low decommodification. Conclusions: The results of this study indicate that stronger public health infrastructure and more inclusive social protections have mitigated the severity of the pandemic’s adverse health impacts, more so than emergency containment measures and social restrictions.

Tetrabromocatecholato Mn(III) complexes of bis(phenol) diamine ligands as models for enzyme-substrate adducts of catechol dioxygenases

        Safaei, E.,Hajikhanmirzaei, L.,Alavi, S.,Lee, Y.I.,Wojtczak, A.,Jaglicic, Z. Pergamon Press 2016 Polyhedron Vol.118 No.-

Two mononuclear manganese(III) complexes of bis(phenol) diamine ligands (H2LNEX) and 2,3,4,5-tetrabromocatechol (TBC), MnLNEX(TBC), were synthesized as models for enzyme-catechol adducts of the intradiol Fe-dependent catechol dioxygenases. X-ray analysis of the complexes has revealed that the manganese center in the model compounds has a distorted octahedral coordination sphere and is surrounded by the L-NEX ligand and two oxygen atoms of TBC. The phenolate moieties of MnLNEX(TBC) were electrochemically oxidized to phenoxyl radicals. Consistent with the electrochemical results, quantum chemical calculations showed that the HOMO and LUMO levels on both complexes are on the phenolate moieties. The paramagnetic properties of the manganese(III) center of the complexes have been investigated by magnetic susceptibility measurements. H2LNEX/MnCl2 showed quite good enzyme-mimicking reactivity. It utilized molecular oxygen in carrying out the cleavage of di-tert-butyl catechol at room temperature. To the best of our knowledge this is the second report where a manganese complex can perform oxygenase and not oxidase activity. (C) 2016 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Synthesis and characterization of an iron(III) complex of an ethylenediamine derivative of an aminophenol ligand in relevance to catechol dioxygenase active site

        Safaei, E.,Naghdi, N.,Jaglicic, Z.,Pevec, A.,Lee, Y.I. Pergamon Press 2017 Polyhedron Vol.122 No.-

An ethylene diamine derivative of a bis(phenol)diamine ligand (H2L) was synthesized via the Mannich reaction and subsequent ring cleavage of the produced imidazoline ring (H2LIm), and then it was characterized by H-1 NMR and IR spectroscopies and CHN analysis. The iron(III) complex (FeLCI) of this ligand was synthesized and characterized by IR, UV-Vis, X-ray and magnetic susceptibility studies. X-ray analysis reveals that in FeLCl the iron(III) center has a distorted square pyramidal coordination sphere and is surrounded by a chlorine atom, two amine nitrogen and two phenolate oxygen atoms of the ligand. Variable-temperature magnetic susceptibility measurements indicate that FeLCI is a paramagnetic high spin iron(III) complex. It shows weak antiferromagnetic interactions through N-H center dot center dot center dot Cl intermolecular interactions. The ligand-centered electrochemical oxidation of this complex, due to the oxidation of phenolate group to phenoxyl radicals, as well as the electrochemical metal-centered reduction of the ferric ion to the ferrous ion were investigated. In addition, the efficient cleavage by oxygenation of 3,5-di-tertbutyl-catechol with FeLCI in the presence of dioxygen was observed. (C) 2016 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Additional cytogenetic aberrations in chronic myeloid leukemia: a single-center experience in the Middle East

        Akbar Safaei,Ahmad Monabati,Moeinadin Safavi,Ali Atashabparvar,Marzieh Hosseini 대한혈액학회 2018 Blood Research Vol.53 No.1

BackgroundAdditional cytogenetic aberrations are associated with disease progression in chronicmyeloid leukemia (CML). This study was conducted to determine the type and frequencyof these aberrations and their relationship with hematologic and molecular findings inthe Middle East. MethodsIn this retrospective study, 134 well-established cases of CML were selected from 2010to 2016. Their hematologic phase and type of fusion gene were determined. Finally, theirkaryotypes were analyzed and reported according to ISCN 2013. ResultsPatients had a mean age of 44 years. Twenty-two patients (16.4%) showed additional cytogeneticaberrations. Nine patients (6.7%) harbored a variant Philadelphia chromosome, and most were in the chronic phase. Seventeen patients (12.7%) had major and minorroute abnormalities. There was a significant relationship between additional cytogeneticaberrations and major molecular response (P=0.032). Patient survival in the group withadditional cytogenetic aberrations was significantly lower (49.7±11.1 mo) than that inthe group without additional cytogenetic aberrations (77.3±3.1 mo) (P=0.031). ConclusionThis study revealed the same frequency of additional cytogenetic aberrations in CML asfound in previous studies. Additional chromosomal aberrations led to shorter survivaland lower rates of achievement of a major molecular response.

        SIZE-DEPENDENT MASS DENSITY OF NANOCRYSTALS

        ALI SAFAEI 성균관대학교(자연과학캠퍼스) 성균나노과학기술원 2012 NANO Vol.7 No.2

A new simple, lattice-type-sensitive model has been developed for the size-dependency of the mass density of individual elemental and compound nanocrystals. It has also been generalized for a multi-composition nanocrystal, and can be used for metallic oxides, ionic crystals and alloys. The model has been corroborated with the experimental data for the particle size-dependent apparent density (AD) of silica nanopowder.
