The objective of this study was to evaluate the magnified endoscopic findings in the diagnosis of follicular lymphoma in the small intestine in comparison with those of intestinal follicular lymphoma and lymphangiectasia. Four patients with follicular lymphoma and 3 with lymphangiectasia in the small intestine were retrospectively analyzed. A prototype magnifying single-balloon enteroscope was used. The findings of the intestinal follicular lymphoma and lymphangiectasia were retrospectively analyzed to determine the magnified endoscopic findings of follicular lymphoma in the small intestine. Opaque white granules were observed in 3 of the 4 patients with follicular lymphoma. Magnified narrow-band imaging (NBI) of the opaque white granules showed stretched microvessels, which had a diminutive tree-like appearance. The remaining patient had no opaque white granules and only displayed whitish villi. Magnified NBI observation of the whitish villi revealed the absence of marginal villus epithelium, which was confirmed by histology. The magnified NBI enteroscopy revealed the diminutive tree-like appearance on the opaque white granules and the absence of marginal villus epithelium of the whitish villi in intestinal follicular lymphoma. These findings may be useful in diagnosing follicular lymphoma. (Intest Res 2018;16:628-634)

Lipofuscin contains fluorophores, which represent a biomarker for cellular aging. Although it remains unsubstantiated clinically, experimental results support that the accumulation of lipofuscin is related to an increased risk of choroidal neovascularization due to age-related macular degeneration, a leading cause of legal blindness. Here, we report that a major lipofuscin component, A2E, activates the retinoic acid receptor (RAR). In vitro experiments using luciferase reporter assay, competitional binding assay, analysis of target genes, and chromatin immunoprecipitation (ChIP) assay strongly suggest that A2E is a bona fide ligand for RAR and induces sustained activation of RAR target genes. A2E-induced vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) expression in a human retinal pigment epithelial cell line (ARPE-19) and RAR antagonist blocked the up-regulation of VEGF. The conditioned medium of A2E-treated ARPE-19 cells induced tube formation in human umbilical vascular endothelial cells, which was blocked by the RAR antagonist and anti-VEGF antibody. These results suggest that A2E accumulation results in the phenotypic alteration of retinal pigment epithelial cells, predisposing the environment to choroidal neovascularization development. This is mediated through the agonistic function of A2E, at least in part. The results of this study provide a novel potential therapeutic target for this incurable condition.

We have investigated the successive magnetic phase transitions of the A-site ordered perovskiteLaMn3Cr4O12 by measuring 139La nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectra. The successivemagnetic transitions are revealed by a very small but clear increase in the full width at half maximum(FWHM) of the 139La NMR signal at TM2 = 150 K and by the disappearance of the signal due to theline broadening at temperatures below TM1 = 50 K. These two magnetic transitions are associatedwith independent orderings within the Cr-site sublattice at TM2 and within the Mn-site sublatticeat TM1. Regarding the magnetic structure of the Cr-site sublattice at temperatures below TM2, thecancellation of internal fields at the La site, ruling out ferromagnetic and multi-q antiferromagneticstructures, is consistent with the typical antiferromagnetic structure for perovskites, such as G-,A- and C-type orders. The uncanceled internal field at the La site at temperatures below TM1is also consistent with these typical antiferromagnetic structures in the Mn-site sublattice. Thedifferences in the temperature dependences of the Knight shift K(T) and the bulk susceptibility χ(T) are consistently explained by the independent magnetic orderings of the Cr- and the Mn-sitesublattices and the cancellation of internal field originating from the Cr-site sublattice at the Lasite at temperatures below TM2.
