Vernacular Evolution of Modern Commodity

This study explores three cases of modern Korean commodity of vernacular design: the Kimchi refrigerator, the rice cooker, and the floor heating system. A new perspective on vernacular design evolution as contemporary high-tech products of necessities is then proposed in a local context. The design of vernacular commodity for the artificial world is the topic of the book Architecture without Architects, by Bernard Rudofsky, written in 1964. It attempts to break down our narrow concepts of building art by introducing the unfamiliar world of non-pedigreed architecture. In equal terms, this idea can be adopted to modern commodity of product design area. For want of a generic label, we have called it vernacular, anonymous, spontaneous, indigenous, rural, and local as the casemight be. For Koreans it is a remote area formulti-national corporations or global star designers to design appliances and facilities related to life's indispensable staples. Examples include the Kimchi refrigerator, the rice cooker, and floor heating system. Highly educated local designers are developing and commanding the design of local staples andmodern vernacular design projects, adapting series of professional conventions of their locality and paying substantial attention to what may be fashionable as well as useful for their neighbor customers.

<B>Graphic Abstract</B> <P>A simple and highly efficient method for the Friedel–Crafts alkenylation of aromatic compounds has been developed by using a metal triflate (OTf) catalyst in an ionic liquid (see scheme, bmim=1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium). 백출(白朮)의 항산화 효과가 DSS 유발 궤양성 대장염 모델에 미치는 영향

Objectives : Although the pharmacological effects of anti-inflammatory and antioxidant action of Atractylodes macrocephala Koidzumi water extract (AM) have been proven from many studies, reports on the antioxidant effect of AM on ulcerative colitis (UC) are scarce. Therefore, we aimed at evaluating the anti-oxidant effect of AM on the DSS-induced UC model. Methods : To induce ulcerative colitis, 8-week-old male Balb/c mice received 5% DSS in drinking water for 1 week. After 1 week of adaptation, mice were divided into four groups (n=8 each) for use as normal (Normal), DSS Control (Control), DSS + AM 100 ㎎/kg (AM100)-treatment, DSS + AM 200 ㎎/kg (AM200)-treatment. After 1 week of the experiment, the animals were sacrificed, and the extracted colon tissue was analyzed for protein through western blot. Results : As a result of confirming the macroscopic changes in colon tissues to confirm the therapeutic effects of AM, the decrease in colon length was suppressed in the AM treatment group compared to the control group. In addition, as a result of biochemical analysis, AM administration significantly reduced serum glutamic oxalacetic transaminase, glutamic pyruvate transaminase levels and tissue malondialdehyde levels. As a result of confirming the protein expression level through western blot, AM administration significantly decreased the expression of NADPH-related proteins such as NOX2, p22<sup>phox</sup>, and iNOS, but significantly increased the expression of SOD, catalase, and GPx-1/2. Conclusions : AM may improve DSS-induced UC in mice by modulating NADPH and antioxidant-related proteins. In conclusion, AM showed an antioxidant effect through the improvement of oxidative stress on UC.
Thioacetamide로 유도된 간섬유화 모델에서 생간건비탕(生肝健脾湯)의 보호 효과

Objective : In modern society, liver diseases such as liver fibrosis are on the rise as inflammation and wound healing processes of the liver are repeated due to factors such as drinking, smoking, and stress. This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of Saenggangeonbi-tang (SGGBT) on thioacetamide (TAA)-induced liver fibrosis. Methods : The mice were divided into 4 groups for examination (n=6): Normal group (Nor), distilled water-treated liver fibrosis mice (Con), silymarin 50 mg/kg-treated liver fibrosis mice (Sily), SGGBT 200 mg/kg-treated liver fibrosis mice (S200). Liver fibrosis was established in the mice via TAA for 8 weeks (1 week 100 mg/kg, 2,3 weeks 200 mg/kg, 4-8 weeks 400 mg/kg, three times a week, intraperitoneal injection) and they were administered silymarin and SGGBT (every day, oral administration) with the TAA. Results : SGGBT significantly decreased the levels of aspartate aminotransferase, alanine aminotransferanse, ammonia, and myeloperoxidase in serum increased by liver fibrosis. As a result of confirming H&E and MT staining, it was confirmed that SGGBT reduced damage and inflammatory cell infiltration in liver tissue, and alleviated changes in collagen fiber deposition and histological fibrosis. Also, it was confirmed through PAS staining that it reduced glycogen deposition in liver tissue. In addition, SGGBT significantly decreased the NADPH oxidases as well as significantly modulated the expression of MMP-2 and TIMP-2. Conclusions : These results suggest that SGGBT regulates the expression of MMP/TIMP protein through inhibition of oxidative stress and alleviates liver fibrosis by reducing collagen and glycogen deposition in liver tissue.
