<P>Polyamide/organophilic montmorillonite nanocomposites were prepared from two silicates with different organophilization resulting in strong and weak matrix/silicate adhesion, respectively; uncoated sodium montmorillonite was used as reference. The silicate content of the composites changed between 0 and 10 vol% in seven steps. Composite structure was characterized by X-ray diffraction and electron microscopy. Micromechanical deformation processes were followed by acoustic emission and volume strain measurements. The structure of the composites is more complicated than usually claimed; they contain individual silicate platelets, tactoids with different degree of intercalation, and larger particles. Elastic deformation and shear yielding dominates during the elongation of the specimens. The matrix polymer and the composites deform according to different mechanisms. Sound is emitted by cavitation in the former, while sound emitting processes are related tactoids and nonexfoliated particles in the composites. Acoustic events are generated mainly by the fracture of the particles. Matrix/silicate adhesion seems to be strong, debonding rarely takes place, and volume increase is initiated primarily by particle failure. The type and amount of the surfactant used for organophilization plays an important role in the determination of deformation processes and properties, since it influences both matrix/filler interaction and the inherent strength of the particles. 68Ga-DOTATATE uptake in mesenchymal tumors causing hypophosphatemic osteomalacia has been recently described. Herein, we present a case of 68Ga-DOTATATE uptake in an intramastoid phosphaturic mesenchymal tumor that had not been depicted in previous 99mTc-Sestamibi and 18F-FDG scans. The lesion was surgically removed and the phosphorus level increased to the normal range.

Associations between Body Composition, Hormonal and Lifestyle Factors, Bone Turnover, and BMD

Background: The relative importance of body composition, lifestyle factors, bone turn-over and hormonal factors in determining bone mineral density (BMD) is unknown. Westudied younger postmenopausal women to determine whether modifiable or non-modifiable risk factors for osteoporosis have stronger associations with BMD. Methods: In multivariable linear regression models, we tested associations betweennon-bone body composition measures, self-reported measures of physical activity anddietary intake, urinary N-telopeptide (NTx), sex hormone concentrations, and BMD in109 postmenopausal women aged 50 to 64 years, adjusting for current hormone thera-py use and clinical risk factors for low BMD. Lean mass, fat mass and areal BMD (aBMD)at the lumbar spine, femoral neck, total hip and distal radius were measured using dualenergy X-ray absorptiometry. Results: Higher body weight and self-reported nonwhite race were independently asso-ciated with higher aBMD at the lumbar spine, femoral neck, total hip and distal radius. Lean and fat mass were not independently associated with aBMD. Older age and higherurinary NTx were independently associated with lower aBMD at the distal radius but notat weight-bearing sites. Sensitivity analyses demonstrated lack of an independent asso-ciation between total daily protein or calorie intake and BMD. Conclusions: BMD, weight and race were the most important determinants of aBMD atall sites. Older age and higher bone turnover were independently associated with loweraBMD at the distal radius. In a limited analysis, self-reported physical activity, dietaryprotein and calorie intake were not associated with aBMD after adjustment for the othervariables.
