Enhancing liquid-chilled storage and cryopreservation capacities of ram spermatozoa by supplementing the diluent with different additives

        Rateb Sherif A.,Khalifa Marwa A.,Abd El- Hamid Ibrahim S.,Shedeed Hesham A. 아세아·태평양축산학회 2020 Animal Bioscience Vol.33 No.7

Objective: In the present study, we determined efficiency of incorporating caffeine, melatonin or omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid in the diluent on mitigating consequences of (a) liquid chilled- and (b) cryo-storage of ram spermatozoa. Methods: In the first experiment, ejaculates (n = 30) were collected from 5 adult rams and were pooled, diluted (1:10) with Tris-citric acid (base diluent) and were split into 4 aliquots assigned for: control (untreated), caffeine (0.1 mM), melatonin (0.3 mM) or omega-3 fatty acids (0.3 mM) (T0). The diluted specimens were stored at 4°C for 48 h, during which sperm physical and cytological properties were evaluated along with oxidative stress indices (T24, T48). In the second experiment, 15 ejaculates (3 per male) were pooled, diluted with glycerolized base diluent (4% glycerol, v/v) and were split corresponding to the same previous treatment groups before being processed for cryopreservation. Post-thaw physical and kinematic sperm properties were assessed by a computer-assisted sperm analysis system. Results: The results clarified superiority of both melatonin and omega-3 supplementation on maintaining (p<0.05) sperm properties, while reducing (p<0.05) lipid peroxidase reaction and enzymatic activities of alanine aminotransferase, aspartate aminotransferase, and alkaline phosphatase in preservation medium, compared to caffeine either during liquid-chilled storage or cryopreservation of spermatozoa. Conclusion: Melatonin and omega-3 are regarded efficient alternatives to caffeine when processing ram spermatozoa for application of artificial insemination or in vitro fertilization.

Performance Analysis of Compressed Sensing Given Insufficient Random Measurements

        Ahmad M. Rateb,Sharifah Kamilah Syed-Yusof 한국전자통신연구원 2013 ETRI Journal Vol.35 No.2

Most of the literature on compressed sensing has not paid enough attention to scenarios in which the number of acquired measurements is insufficient to satisfy minimal exact reconstruction requirements. In practice, encountering such scenarios is highly likely, either intentionally or unintentionally, that is, due to high sensing cost or to the lack of knowledge of signal properties. We analyze signal reconstruction performance in this setting. The main result is an expression of the reconstruction error as a function of the number of acquired measurements.

Improvement of Ultra-wideband Link Performance over Bands Requiring Interference Mitigation in Korea

        Ahmad M. Rateb,Syarifah Kamilah Syed-Yusof,Norsheila Fisal 한국전자통신연구원 2010 ETRI Journal Vol.32 No.1

Ultra-wideband (UWB) systems have witnessed a debate over whether they may cause interference to other existing and future narrowband systems sharing their band of operation. The detect and avoid (DAA) mechanism was developed as a solution to reduce interference to narrowband systems in order to ease regulatory concerns. It works by adaptively reducing the transmitted power at the overlapping bands upon detecting an active narrowband link. However, employing DAA degrades the performance of UWB transmissions. In this paper, we present the Korean UWB regulations as an example of regulations that require DAA in certain bands. We investigate DAA’s impact on performance and propose a method to mitigate it, which provides UWB with the more efficient support of the DAA mechanism and enables it to avoid a larger number of narrowband users while sustaining the data rate. Results show significant improvement in performance with the application of our technique compared to conventional performance.

Effect of Palestinian Honey on Spermatogenesis in Rats

        Abdul-Salam Abdul-Ghani,Nabil Dabdoub,Rateb Muhammad,Rula Abdul-Ghani,Munir Qazzaz 한국식품영양과학회 2008 Journal of medicinal food Vol.11 No.4

Treatment of male albino rats with 5% honey for 20 days had no significant effect on total body weight or on the relative weight of other organs like the testis, seminal vesicles, spleen, kidneys, liver, heart, or brain. The only significant change was a 17% increase in the relative weight of the epididymis (P ≤ .01). The relative weight of all the other organs was similar to those in control animals treated for the same period with drinking water. Treatment of rats for the same period with the same concentration of 5% sucrose produced no significant changes in absolute or relative weight of tested organs compared to control animals. The same treatment with Palestinian honey increased significantly the epididymal sperm count by 37% (P ≤ .05). The activity of testicular marker enzymes for spermatogenesis such as sorbitol dehydrogenase (SDH) was increased by 31% (P ≤ .05), and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) was reduced by 48% (P ≤ .05), which indicates that treatment with honey induces spermatogenesis. Similar treatment with sucrose had no significant effect on any of the key enzymes or epididymal sperm count. In conclusion, our results show that ingestion of honey induces spermatogenesis in rats by increasing epididymal sperm count, increasing selectively the relative weight of the epididymis, and increasing SDH activity and reducing LDH activity.

Voltammetric Studies on Some Thiadiazoles and Their Derivatives

        Maghraby, A. A. El,Abou-Elenien, G. M.,Rateb, N. M,Abdel-Tawab, H. R. The Korean Electrochemical Society 2009 한국전기화학회지 Vol.12 No.1

The redox characteristics of 2-arylaldehydehydrazono-3-phenyl-5-substituted-2, 3-dihydro-1, 3, 4-thiadiazoles (1a-h) have been investigated in nonaqueous solvents such as 1, 2-dichloroethane (DCE), dichloromethane (DCM), acetonitrile (AN), Tetrahydrofuran (THF), and dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) at platinum electrode. Through controlled potential electrolysis, the oxidation and reduction products of the investigated compounds had been separated and indentified. The redox mechanism had been suggested and proved. It had been found that all the investigated compounds were oxidized in two irreversible one-electron processes following the well-known pattern of The EC-mechanism; the first electron loss gives the corresponding cation-radical which is followed by proton removal from the ortho-position in the N-phenyl ring forming the radical. The obtained radical undergoes a second electron uptake from the nitrogen in the N = C group forming the unstable intermediate (di-radical cation) which undergoes ring closure forming the corresponding cation. The formed cation was stabilized in solution through its combination with a perchlorate anion from the medium. On the other hand, these compounds are reduced in a single two-electron process or in a successive two one-electron processes following the well known pattern of the EEC-mechanism according to the nature of the substituent; the first one gives the anion-radical followed by a second electron reduction to give the dianion which is basic enough to abstract protons from the media to saturate the (C = O) bond.

Switching to Aflibercept in Diabetic Macular Edema after Unsatisfactory Response to Other Anti-vascular Endothelial Growth Factor Drugs

        Walid S,Ibrahim,Zeiad H,Eldaly,Mohamed G,Saleh,Mahmoud F,Rateb,Ahmed H,Aldoghaimy 대한안과학회 2019 Korean Journal of Ophthalmology Vol.33 No.2

Purpose: To evaluate the efficacy of switching to aflibercept in diabetic macular edema (DME) with suboptimal response to previous anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (anti-VEGF) injections. Methods: A prospective interventional case series study recruited patients from a single center diagnosed with DME with suboptimal response to anti-VEGF injections. Three consecutive monthly injections of aflibercept were performed. The primary outcome measure was mean change in visual acuity after switching to aflibercept. Results: Forty-two patients (42 eyes) were included. Baseline logarithm of the minimum angle of resolution(logMAR) visual acuity was 0.87 ± 0.23 and improved significantly to 0.62 ± 0.29, 0.56 ± 0.34, and 0.46 ± 0.35 at 1, 2, and 3 months, respectively, after the first injection. Mean baseline retinal thickness was 451.57± 107.09 μm and decreased significantly at 1, 2, and 3 months after switching to aflibercept (346.52 ± 79.03, 328.24 ± 81.98, and 313.71 ± 85.79 μm, respectively). Both visual improvement and mean change in retinal thickness were significant in patients with pre-aflibercept best-corrected visual acuity less than 1.0 logMAR but were not significant in patients with best-corrected visual acuity more than 1.0 logMAR. Conclusions: Switching to aflibercept in DME patients with an unsatisfactory response to previous anti-VEGF injections provided acceptable short-term visual and retinal architectural improvement.
