      • Pleiotropic Mitochondria: The Influence of Mitochondria on Neuronal Development and Disease

        Rangaraju, Vidhya,Lewis Jr, Tommy L.,Hirabayashi, Yusuke,Bergami, Matteo,Motori, Elisa,Cartoni, Romain,Kwon, Seok-Kyu,Courchet, Julien Society for Neuroscience 2019 The Journal of neuroscience Vol.39 No.42

<P>Mitochondria play many important biological roles, including ATP production, lipid biogenesis, ROS regulation, and calcium clearance. In neurons, the mitochondrion is an essential organelle for metabolism and calcium homeostasis. Moreover, mitochondria are extremely dynamic and able to divide, fuse, and move along microtubule tracks to ensure their distribution to the neuronal periphery. Mitochondrial dysfunction and altered mitochondrial dynamics are observed in a wide range of conditions, from impaired neuronal development to various neurodegenerative diseases. Novel imaging techniques and genetic tools provide unprecedented access to the physiological roles of mitochondria by visualizing mitochondrial trafficking, morphological dynamics, ATP generation, and ultrastructure. Recent studies using these new techniques have unveiled the influence of mitochondria on axon branching, synaptic function, calcium regulation with the ER, glial cell function, neurogenesis, and neuronal repair. This review provides an overview of the crucial roles played by mitochondria in the CNS in physiological and pathophysiological conditions.</P>

      • Deep Learning based Human Recognition using Integration of GAN and Spatial Domain Techniques

Sharath, S,Rangaraju, HG International Journal of Computer ScienceNetwork S 2021 International journal of computer science and netw Vol.21 No.8

Real-time human recognition is a challenging task, as the images are captured in an unconstrained environment with different poses, makeups, and styles. This limitation is addressed by generating several facial images with poses, makeup, and styles with a single reference image of a person using Generative Adversarial Networks (GAN). In this paper, we propose deep learning-based human recognition using integration of GAN and Spatial Domain Techniques. A novel concept of human recognition based on face depiction approach by generating several dissimilar face images from single reference face image using Domain Transfer Generative Adversarial Networks (DT-GAN) combined with feature extraction techniques such as Local Binary Pattern (LBP) and Histogram is deliberated. The Euclidean Distance (ED) is used in the matching section for comparison of features to test the performance of the method. A database of millions of people with a single reference face image per person, instead of multiple reference face images, is created and saved on the centralized server, which helps to reduce memory load on the centralized server. It is noticed that the recognition accuracy is 100% for smaller size datasets and a little less accuracy for larger size datasets and also, results are compared with present methods to show the superiority of proposed method.

Effect of fineness of high lime fly ash on pozzolanic reactivity and ASR mitigation

Kaveh Afshinnia,Prasada R. Rangaraju 사단법인 한국계산역학회 2017 Computers and Concrete, An International Journal Vol.20 No.2

Typically, high lime fly ash (Class C) has been characterized as a fly ash, which at lower replacement levels is not as effective as the low lime (Class F) fly ash, in mitigating alkali-silica reaction (ASR) in portland cement concrete. The influence of fineness of Class C, obtained by grinding virgin fly ash into finer particles, on its pozzolanic reactivity and ASR mitigation performance was investigated in this study. In order to assess the pozzolanic reactivity of mortar mixtures containing virgin or ground fly ashes, the strength activity index (SAI) test and thermo-gravimetric analysis (TGA) were conducted on the mortar cubes and paste samples, respectively, containing virgin fly ash or two ground fly ashes. In addition, to evaluate any improvement in the ASR mitigation of ground fly ashes compared to that of the virgin fly ash, the accelerated mortar bar test (AMBT) was conducted on the mortar mixtures containing different dosages of either virgin or ground fly ashes. In all tests crushed glass aggregate was used as a highly reactive aggregate. Results from this study showed that the finest fly ash (i.e., with an average particle size of 3.1 microns) could increase the flow ability along with the pozzolanic reactivity of the mortar mixture. However, results from this study suggested that the fineness of high lime fly ash does not seem to have any significant effect on ASR mitigation.

Jeong, Jaemyeng,Kumar, Rangaraju Satish,Kim, Ick Jin,Son, Young-A Informa UK (TaylorFrancis) 2017 Molecular Crystals and Liquid Crystals Vol.644 No.1

<P>We have designed and synthesized novel symmetrical (4a, 4b) and unsymmetrical (6) copper (II), zinc (II) Phthalocyanine derivatives with (4-methoxynaphthalen-1-yl)oxy) and fluoro substitution. For this synthesis we started from nucleophilic substitution of fluorine atoms in tetrafluorophthalonitrile by 4-methoxy naphthoxy groups. The resulting three phthalocyanines have been fully characterized by a series of spectroscopic methods including electronic absorption, elemental analysis, MALDI-TOF mass, and IR spectroscopy. These phthalocyanine complexes were investigated by cyclic voltammetric measurements to observe the both metal-based and phthalocyanine ring-based reduction and oxidation electron transfer processes.</P>

Synthesis, thermochromic, solvatochromic and axial ligation studies of Zn-porphyrin complex

Jeong, Jaemyeng,Satish Kumar, Rangaraju,Naveen, Mergu,Son, Young-A Elsevier Sequoia [etc.] 2018 Inorganica chimica acta Vol.469 No.-

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>In this study, the synthesis of a new zinc porphyrin hybrid (<B>CNU-TJK</B>) is reported. This novel metal porphyrin was characterized by 1H NMR, FT-IR, UV–Vis and HR-MS analysis. This porphyrin shows a strong solvatochromism that is reflected by its absorption and emission maxima in different solvents. The reversible thermochromic property of this dye was investigated at different temperatures by UV–Vis studies in toluene. The large thermochromic effect detected for the dye was attributed to pyridyl, phenyl and acetylene groups, whose association and dissociation dynamics in toluene lead to an absorption spectral change with temperature, accompanied by a change in color. The axial coordination studies also conducted and finally, DFT calculations were performed to rationalize the dye structures.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> In the present study, porphyrin dye was synthesized and fully characterized. </LI> <LI> The thermochromic, solvatochromic and sensing properties of the dye were evaluated by UV–Vis and emission studies. </LI> <LI> DFT calculations were conducted to rationalize the dye structure. </LI> <LI> The thermochromic property of this compound was studied in toluene, different temperature variations. </LI> <LI> This is the first attempt of a study of solvatochromism and axial coordination studies of pyridyl-porphyrin monomers. </LI> </UL> </P> <P><B>Graphical abstract</B></P> <P>[DISPLAY OMISSION]</P>

        Min, Kyeong Su,Kumar, Rangaraju Satish,Lee, Jeong Hoon,Kim, Kang Seok,Lee, Seung Geol,Son, Young-A. Elsevier 2019 Dyes and pigments Vol.160 No.-

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>In this study, we synthesized porphyrin dyes and structurally characterized them using 1H and 13C NMR and FT-IR and high-resolution mass spectrometry. By using these porphyrins, new TiO2-porphyrin catalysts (<B>TiO</B> <B>2</B> <B>-PORPC-1</B>, <B>TiO</B> <B>2</B> <B>-PORPC-2, TiO</B> <B>2</B> <B>-PORPC-3</B> and <B>TiO</B> <B>2</B> <B>-PORPC-4</B>), were prepared and the structures of these catalysts were confirmed by using SEM, TEM, solid-state UV-visible spectroscopy, XPS, FT-IR spectroscopy and EDS analysis. Studies on the photodegradation of methylene blue suggested that our TiO2-porphyrin photocatalysts were more effective for the degradation than bare TiO2-anatase, and furthermore, TiO2-Zn-porphyrins showed better photocatalytic activity than the metal-free TiO2-porphyrins because of their high charge-transfer properties.
