Herein, we present a facile low-cost and eco-friendly approach for conversion of bamboo timber waste (Bf) derived cellulose nanocrystals (Bf-CNCs) into strong blue luminescent graphene quantum dots (Bf-GQDs) by hydrothermal route. The various properties of synthesized Bf-GQDs were investigated using different spectroscopic techniques. The probable mechanism of Bf-GQDs formation from Bf-CNCs and the effect of pH, particle size on the fluorescent properties of Bf-GQDs also executed. Furthermore, Bf-GQDs were used for the detection of curcumin in an aqueous environment which is the major prerequisite of the present study. The Bf-GQDs showed remarkable photoluminescence (PL) quenching kinetics toward the curcumin (LOD 30.0 nM L 1) assessed by Stern-Volmer plot. The practicability of the method assessed using ginger rhizome juice, while the selectivity of the Bf-GQDs evaluated against different metal ions and different biochemicals. The proposed method will support to establish the strategies for the detection of biochemicals from the aqueous system.

Purpose: Periodontitis is an infectious disease caused predominantly by gram-negative anerobes. The host inflammatory response to these bacteria causes alveolar bone loss that is characterized as periodontitis. Omega-3 fatty acids (${\omega}$-3 FAs) have anti-inflammatory properties, thus have been used to treat some chronic inflammatory diseases such as cardiovascular disease and rheumatoid arthritis. We aimed to evaluate the effect of dietary supplementation with ${\omega}$-3 FAs as a host modulating agent in patients with chronic periodontitis. Methods: Sixty otherwise healthy subjects with moderate and severe chronic periodontitis were enrolled in our randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial. The control group (CG, n=30) was treated with scaling and root planing (SRP) and given a placebo; the treatment group (TG, n=30) was treated with SRP and dietary supplementation of ${\omega}$-3 FAs (one 300 mg tablet daily for 12 weeks). Periodontal clinical parameters and serum C-reactive protein (CRP) levels were evaluated in all patients at baseline, a 6-week and 12-week period after treatment. Results: A significant reduction in the gingival index, sulcus bleeding index, pocket depth, and clinical attachment level was found in the TG compared to the CG at a 12-week period. However, no statistically significant changes in serum CRP levels were found. Conclusions: Our findings suggest that ${\omega}$-3 FAs can successfully reduce gingival inflammation, pocket depth, and attachment level gain. Dietary supplementation with ${\omega}$-3 FAs may have potential benefits as a host modulatory agent in the prevention and/or C management of chronic periodontitis.

<P>Nanostructured TiO2 thin films were fabricated via a facile, economical, and energy-efficient microwave-assisted dip-coating (MWDC) technique. Further, the resulting TiO2 films were characterized by means of X-ray diffraction, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, selected-area electron diffraction, Fourier transform Raman spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and photoluminescence spectroscopy techniques for their phase structure, morphology, and optical and surface properties. TiO2-mediated photoelectrocatalytic degradation of the antibiotic cefotaxime (CFX) in an aqueous solution was studied by varying the pH under UV illumination. The degradation intermediates and possible reaction degradation path of CFX were analyzed by electrospray ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MS). The MS spectra revealed that degradation of CFX occurs through β-lactum corresponding to the cleavage of the cephem nucleus. Moreover, the antibacterial activity of CFX prior to and after photoelectrocatalytic degradation was carried out to analyze the toxicity against <I>Staphylococcus aureus</I> and salmonella typhi bacteria. Interestingly, it was observed that the antibiotic activity was drastically inhibited after photoelectrocatalytic degradation of the CFX solution. The photoelectrocatalytic stability of a nanostructured TiO2 electrode was evaluated by recycling the degradation experiments. It was observed that there was no significant decrease in the catalytic activity, indicating potential applications of the TiO2 electrode prepared by the MWDC method.</P><P><B>Graphic Abstract</B> <IMG SRC='http://pubs.acs.org/appl/literatum/publisher/achs/journals/content/iecred/2014/iecred.2014.53.issue-47/ie501821a/production/images/medium/ie-2014-01821a_0014.gif'></P><P><A href='http://pubs.acs.org/doi/suppl/10.1021/ie501821a'>ACS Electronic Supporting Info</A></P>

Purpose: The prognosis of total hip replacement (THR) after open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) versus THR following non-operative treatment of acetabular fractures is unclear. Few studies have been conducted in this regard. Therefore, the purpose of the current study was to perform an assessment and compare the functional outcomes for study subjects in the ORIF and non-ORIF groups during the follow-up period compared to baseline. Materials and Methods: This longitudinal comparative study, which included 40 patients who underwent THR for either posttraumatic arthritis after fixation of an acetabular fracture or arthritis following conservative management of a fracture, was conducted for 60 months. Twenty-four patients had undergone ORIF, and 16 patients had undergone nonoperative/conservative management for acetabular fractures. Following THR, the patients were followed up for monitoring of functional outcomes for the Harris hip score (HHS) and comparison between the ORIF and non-ORIF groups was performed. Results: The HHS showed significant improvement in both ORIF and non-ORIF groups. At the end of the mean follow-up period, no significant variation in scores was observed between the groups, i.e., ORIF group (91.61±6.64) compared to nonORIF group (85.74±11.56). A significantly higher number of re-interventions were required for medial wall fractures and combined fractures compared to posterior fractures (P<0.05). Conclusion: THR resulted in improved functional outcome during follow-up in both the groups; however, the ORIF group was observed to have better functional outcome. Re-intervention was not required for any of the posterior fractures at the end of the mean follow-up period.

Purpose: Host modulatory therapy has been proposed as a treatment for periodontal diseases. A class of herbal medicines, known to be immunomodulators, alters the activity ofimmune function through the regulation of informational molecules such as cytokines. Inthe current study, we tested the hypothesis that herbal immunomodulator drugs act as anadjuvant to scaling and root planing (SRP) in alleviating periodontal inflammation by improvingclinical and biochemical parameters. Methods: Sixty healthy subjects (30 in each group) with moderate and severe chronic periodontitiswere enrolled in a double-blind, placebo-controlled, double-masked randomisedcontrolled trial. The control group was treated with SRP and a placebo, whereas the testgroup was treated with SRP followed by dietary supplementation of Septilin for 3 weeks. Periodontal clinical parameters and serum C-reactive protein (CRP) levels were evaluatedfor all patients at the baseline, 3 weeks, and 6 weeks. Results: Improved gingival index scores found in the test group as compared to the controlgroup were found to be statistically significant only after 3 weeks (P<0.001). In contrast, the decrease in the sulcus bleeding index and pocket depth scores was statistically highlysignificant in the test group as compared to the control group after 3 weeks and 6 weeks(P<0.001). However, reduced clinical attachment level and CRP scores, as reflected in thetest group as compared to the control group, were not found to be statistically significantafter both 3 weeks (P>0.05) and 6 weeks (P>0.05). Conclusions: The results of this clinical-biochemical study suggest that dietary supplementationwith herbal immunomodulatory agents may be a promising adjunct to SRP and mayaid in improving periodontal treatment outcomes.

<P>Herein, we report honeycomb nanostructured single crystalline hexagonal WO3 (h-WO3) thin films in order to improve electrochromic performance. In the present investigation, honeycomb nanostructured WO3 with different unit size and nanowire array with highly nanocrystalline frameworks have been synthesized <I>via</I> a hydrothermal technique. The influence of hydrothermal reaction time on the honeycomb unit cells, crystallite size, lithium ion diffusion coefficient and switching time for coloration/bleaching were studied systematically. The electrochromic study reveals that the honeycomb unit cell size has a significant impact on the electrochromic performance. Small unit cells in the honeycomb lead to large optical modulation and fast switching response. A large optical modulation in the visible spectral region (60.74% at <I>λ</I> = 630 nm) at a potential of −1.2 V with fast switching time (4.29 s for coloration and 3.38 s for bleaching) and high coloration efficiency (87.23 cm2 C−1) is observed in the honeycomb WO3 thin films with a unit cell diameter of 1.7 μm. The variation in color on reduction of WO3 with applied potential has been plotted on an <I>xy</I>-chromaticity diagram and the color space coordinate shows the transition from a colorless to deep blue state.</P> <P>Graphic Abstract</P><P>Honeycomb nanostructured single crystalline hexagonal WO3 (h-WO3) thin films in order to improve electrochromic performance. <IMG SRC='http://pubs.rsc.org/services/images/RSCpubs.ePlatform.Service.FreeContent.ImageService.svc/ImageService/image/GA?id=c4dt02953d'> </P>
