The Effect of Board Composition and Ownership Structure on Firm Value: Evidence from Jordan

This study aims to investigate the effect of the composition of the board and ownership structure on a firm’s value in Jordanian firms. Specifically, it aims to determine the effect of board size, (CEO) duality, and family, foreign, institutional, and government ownership on a firm’s value. An ordinary least square regression (OLS) was employed to examine the study hypotheses in a sample of 35 Jordanian industrial firms (175 firm-year observation) for a period of five years from 2016–2020. As measured by Tobin’s Q (Q ratio) and marketto- book (MB ratio) for Jordanian industrial firms listed on Amman Stock Exchange (ASE). The result found that foreign ownership, institutional ownership, and family ownership have a significant and positive effect on firm value. By contrast, government ownership does not have a significant effect on firm value. With respect to board composition (CEO duality and board size), the study results found no evidence to support the effect of board composition on firm value. The study recommended the concerned authorities with several recommendations, most notably: taking the necessary measures to ensure the continuity and growth of family businesses because of their positive impact on the value of the company and economic growth, spreading awareness about how governance protects the interests of investors.

Objectives: Providing high service quality is one of the main functions of health systems. Measuring service quality is the basic prerequisite for improving quality. The aim of this study was to evaluate the quality of service in teaching hospitals using importance-performance analysis matrix. Methods: A descriptive-analytic study was conducted through a cross-sectional method in six academic hospitals of Qazvin, Iran, in 2012. A total of 360 patients contributed to the study. The sampling technique was stratified random sampling. Required data were collected based on a standard questionnaire (SERVQUAL). Data analysis was done through SPSS version 18 statistical software and importance-performance analysis matrix. Results: The results showed a significant gap between importance and performance in all five dimensions of service quality (p < 0.05). In reviewing the gap, “reliability” (2.36) and “assurance” (2.24) dimensions had the highest quality gap and “responsiveness” had the lowest gap (1.97). Also, according to findings, reliability and assurance were in Quadrant (I), empathy was in Quadrant (II), and tangibles and responsiveness were in Quadrant (IV) of the importance-performance matrix. Conclusion: The negative gap in all dimensions of quality shows that quality improvement is necessary in all dimensions. Using quality and diagnosis measurement instruments such as importance-performance analysis will help hospital managers with planning of service quality improvement and achieving longterm goals.
Modeling properties of self-compacting concrete: support vector machines approach

The paper explores the potential of Support Vector Machines (SVM) approach in predicting 28-day compressive strength and slump flow of self-compacting concrete. Total of 80 data collected from the exiting literature were used in present work. To compare the performance of the technique, prediction was also done using a back propagation neural network model. For this data-set, RBF kernel worked well in comparison to polynomial kernel based support vector machines and provide a root mean square error of 4.688 (MPa) (correlation coefficient=0.942) for 28-day compressive strength prediction and a root mean square error of 7.825 cm (correlation coefficient=0.931) for slump flow. Results obtained for RMSE and correlation coefficient suggested a comparable performance by Support Vector Machine approach to neural network approach for both 28-day compressive strength and slump flow prediction.

Tetraaza Schiff base macrocyclic ligands, $L^1$,$L^2$ and their transition metal chelates have been synthesized and characterized by elemental analyses, IR, electronic, EPR and $^1H$ NMR spectra, TGA and magnetic measurements. The molar conductance of one milli-molar solution of the complexes measured in DMF indicates that the divalent metal complexes are nonelectrolyte while those of trivalent metal ion, are 1:1 electrolytic in the same solvent. The reduction of Racah parameter from the free ion value confirms the presence of considerable covalence of metal ligand sigma bond in the Co(II) and Mn(II) complexes. The EPR spectra of Cu(II) complexes at room temperature shows axial symmetry indicating a $d_x{^2}_{-y}{^2}$ ground state with significant covalent character. The thermal analysis suggests that the complexes do not contain water molecules because only the metal is left as residue.

The Knoevenagal reaction of malononitrile and acetylacetone gave the acyclic product 3 which was separated in a good yield and identified. The reactivity of 3 towards some chemical reagents is studied. Thus, the reaction of 3 with aromatic aldehydes, hydrazines and cyanomethylene derivatives gave products 6-12. Reaction of 3 with benzenediazonium chloride gave the primidine derivative 14.
Relationship between Spiritual Health and Quality of Life in Patients with Cancer

As the essence of health in humans, spiritual health is a fundamental concept for discussing chronic diseases such as cancer and a major approach for improving quality of life in patients is through creating meaningfulness and purpose. The present descriptive analytical study was conducted to assess the relationship between spiritual health and quality of life in 210 patients with cancer admitted to the Cancer Institute of Iran, selected through convenience sampling in 2014. Data were collected using Spiritual Health Questionnaire and the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life Questionnaire (EORTC-QLQ). Patients' performance was assessed through the Karnofsky Performance Status Indicator and their cognitive status through the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE). Data were analyzed in SPSS-16 using descriptive statistics and stepwise linear regression. The results obtained reported the mean and standard deviation of the patients' spiritual health scoreas $78.4{\pm}16.1$ and the mean and standard deviation of their quality of life score as $58.1{\pm}18.7$. The stepwise linear regression analysis confirmed a positive and significant relationship between spiritual health and quality of life in patients with cancer (${\beta}$=0.688 and r=0.00). The results of the study show that spiritual health should be more emphasized and reinforced as a factor involved in improving quality of life in patients with cancer. Designing care therapies and spiritual interventions is a priority in the treatment of these patients.

Background Genome-wide runs of homozygosity (ROH) are appropriate to estimate genomic inbreeding, determine population history, unravel the genetic architecture of complex traits and disorders. Objective The study sought to investigate and compare the actual proportion of homozygosity or autozygosity in the genomes of progeny of four subtypes of first cousin mating in humans, using both pedigree and genomic measures for autosomes and sex chromosomes. Methods For this purpose, Illumina Global Screening Array-24 v1.0 BeadChip followed by cyto-ROH analysis through Illumina Genome Studio was used to characterise the homozygosity in five participants from North Indian state (Uttar Pradesh). PLINK v.1.9 software was used to estimate the genomic inbreeding coefficients viz. ROH-based inbreeding estimate (FROH) and homozygous loci-based inbreeding estimate (FHOM). Results A total of 133 ROH segments were detected with maximum number and genomic coverage in Matrilateral Parallel (MP) type and minimum in outbred individual. ROH pattern revealed that MP type has a higher degree of homozygosity than other subtypes. The comparison of FROH, FHOM, and pedigree-based inbreeding estimate (FPED) showed some difference in theoretical and realised proportion of homozygosity for sex-chromosomal loci but not for autosome for each type of consanguinity. Conclusions This is the very first study to compare and estimate the pattern of homozygosity among the kindreds of first cousin unions. However, a greater number of individuals from each type of marriage is required for statistical inference of no difference between theoretical and realized homozygosity among different degrees of inbreeding prevalent in humans worldwide.

In recent years, the image processing mechanisms are used widely in several medical areas for improving earlier detection and treatment stages, in which the time factor is very important to discover the disease in the patient as possible as fast, especially in various cancer tumors such as the liver cancer. Liver cancer has been attracting the attention of medical and sciatic communities in the latest years because of its high prevalence allied with the difficult treatment. Statistics indicate that liver cancer, throughout world, is the one that attacks the greatest number of people. Over the time, study of MR images related to cancer detection in the liver or abdominal area has been difficult. Early detection of liver cancer is very important for successful treatment. There are few methods available to detect cancerous cells. In this paper, an automatic approach that integrates the intensity-based segmentation and k-means clustering approach for detection of cancer region in MRI scan images of liver.
