Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) have been characterized in various organs and plant species. However, few studies have investigated AMPs in the genus Capsicum , especially their biological activities and mechanism of action. AMPs are small proteins isolated primarily from plants and animals. AMPs are of great interest to researchers because of their potent antimicrobial activity due to their ability to interact with cell membranes. While some AMPs participate in innate immune response by providing a rapid line of defense against infection, others may bolster plant defense against certain pests and pathogens. The genus Capsicum contains a myriad of AMPs involved in plant defense with the potential for new antimicrobial molecules. In recent years, our group and others have isolated and characterized AMPs from seeds, fruits, leaves and roots of Capsicum plants. Herein, we describe the diff erent AMP families, like defensins, lipid transfer proteins (LTPs), thionins, proteinase inhibitors, and others, present in the genus Capsicum . We also discuss the current knowledge of their antimicrobial activity, mechanism of action, and possible uses as antimicrobial molecules and in plant biotechnology.
Cardiovascular Effect of Diosgenin in Ovariectomized Rats

Diosgenin is a phytoestrogen and a constituent of Dioscorea. It has several biological effects, and some of them are anti-inflammatory, antidiabetic, antitumor, and vasodilatory. The present study investigated both the vasorelaxing and antioxidant mechanisms of diosgenin in isolated rat aortic rings. Female rats weighing 200–220 g were subjected to sham or OVX operations at 8 weeks of age. Ovariectomy was performed for menopause induction after anesthesia. Diosgenin (10−9 M–3 × 10−4 M) produced a concentration-dependent relaxation in aortic rings precontracted with phenylephrine (1 μM), exhibiting Emax value of 55.34% ± 7.7% (in endothelium-intact rings) and Emax value of 30.30% ± 5.7% (in endothelium-denuded rings). In the endothelium-intact rings, the vasorelaxing effect of diosgenin was reduced by NG-nitro-l-arginine methyl ester (L-NAME) (100 μM), atropine (1 μM), indomethacin (10 μM), 1H-[1,2,4]oxadiazolo-[4,3-a]quinoxalin-1-one (ODQ) (10 μM), 4-aminopyridine (1 mM), tetraethylammonium (3 mM), glibenclamide (10 μM), apamin (10 μM), and Tiron (1 μM). Diosgenin (10−5 M) inhibited the contractions induced by cumulative addition of phenylephrine (10−9–10−5 M). The 28-days treatment with diosgenin (50 mg/kg, v.o.) did not imply changes in the myeloperoxidase parameter, but increased significantly, levels of glutathione, superoxide dismutase, and nitric oxide, as well as reduced the concentration of malondialdehyde related to lipid peroxidation. Our results suggest that diosgenin induced relaxation in aortic rings via an endothelium-dependent pathway, which involves the EDRF, the opening of potassium channels and antioxidant action.

This study aimed to evaluate the antimicrobial activity of 2-phenylethynyl-butyltellurium (PEBT) in Escherichia coli and the relation to its pro-oxidant effect. For this, we carried out the disk diffusion test, minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) assay, and survival curve analysis. We also measured the level of extracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS), activity of the antioxidant enzymes superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT), and level of nonprotein thiols (NPSH). PEBT at 1.28 and 0.128 mg/disk exhibited antimicrobial capability in the disk diffusion test, with an MIC value of 1.92 mg/ml, whereas PEBT at 0.96, 1.92, and 3.84 mg/ml inhibited bacterial growth after a 9-h exposure. PEBT at 3.84, 1.92, and 0.96 mg/ml increased extracellular ROS production, decreased the intracellular NPSH level, and reduced the SOD and CAT activities. Glutathione or ascorbic acid in the medium protected the bacterial cells from the antimicrobial effect of PEBT. In conclusion, PEBT exhibited antimicrobial activity against E. coli, involving the generation of ROS, oxidation of NPSH, and reduction of the antioxidant defenses in the bacterial cells.

2-Mercaptopyrimidine (2MPy) forms a two-dimensional planar lattice on Au(111). This structure is able to intercalate guestmolecules such as the oligopyridines. To test the ability of the 2MPy lattice as a host able to intercalate a variety of moleculesregardless of their geometry and electronic structures, some arenes and polyenes were analyzed as possible guests. Benzene,naphthalene, azulene, phenanthrene, anthracene, biphenyl, uorobenzene and durene were selected to coadsorb with 2MPy on thesurfaces. The experimental data show that the arenes and polyenes selected coadsorb with 2MPy on Au(11) under dened ex-perimental conditions, forming a mixed layer with stoichiometry of 2:1 in thiol:guest. The STM contrast observed for the guestmolecules is compared to the experimental and theoretical results already published.. 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights re-served.

지역학은 특정 공간에 대한 학제적 연구에 전념하는 지식인의 역량을 개발해주지만 동시에 학자들을 자족하는 현실에 가둬놓을 수도 있다. 또한 북대서양에서 생산된 지식이 이 분야를 압도하는 현실을 정당화하고 결과적으로 탈식민 시대 주변부들 간의 지적 관찰을 저해한다. 이 글은 아시아에 대한 라틴 아메리카의 호기심을 역사적으로 개괄하면서 북반구(구미)의 분석틀이 가진 패권적 지위에 의문을 제기하며 아시아 지역학을 탈지역화하는 데에 일조한다. 그 호기심은 여러 단계를 거쳤다. 첫째, 처음에는 식민제국의 관점을 모방하는 오리엔탈리즘적 접근법을 통해, 이후에는 개발과 근대성 이론을 통해 정의되었다. 둘째, 19세기에는 귀족적이고 두서없는 호기심에서 출발했지만 제2차 세계대전 이후에는 전문적인 학문의 관심 대상이 되었다. 끝으로 세계 주변부 사이의 산발적인 연관관계에서 근대화의 대안적 모델로 변화했다. 필자는 남반구(Global South), 특히 라틴아메리카와 아프리카에서 아시아 지역연구의 제도화를 지원함으로써 이 분야가 진일보할 수 있고 아시아 지역학이 탈중심화될 수 있으며 학제 간 논의가 촉진될 수 있다고 주장한다.

This work aimed to isolate fungal strains from Brazilian fruits and select potential biocatalysts for the bioconversion of the monoterpenes citronellol, limonene,linalool, and geraniol. Among the 36 fungal strains isolated,12 were capable to convert citronellol into rose oxide and its isomers, while the biotransformation of limonene led to the formation of 2 derivatives of high market value, carvone and α-terpineol. Furthermore, geraniol was converted into 2 new products and linalool into linalool oxide, ocimenol,geraniol, and also α-terpineol by using several strains. Accordingly, the microorganisms LB-2025, LB-2036, and LB-2038 were selected for further experiments and identified as Penicillium sp., Penicillium sp., and Aspergillus sp.,respectively. Induction studies with substrates and products have been evaluated and the production of rose oxide was enhanced from 5- to 8-fold, while the products originated from the biotransformation of limonene have not changed. Thus, this work demonstrates the biotechnological production of new flavor compounds.

Natural and beneficial associations between plants and bacteria have demonstrated potential commercial application for several agricultural crops. The sunflower has acquired increasing importance in Brazilian agribusiness owing to its agronomic characteristics such as the tolerance to edaphoclimatic variations, resistance to pests and diseases, and adaptation to the implements commonly used for maize and soybean, as well as the versatility of the products and by-products obtained from its cultivation. A study of the cultivable bacteria associated with two sunflower cultivars, using classical microbiological methods, successfully obtained isolates from different plant tissues (roots, stems, florets, and rhizosphere). Out of 57 plantgrowth- promoting isolates obtained, 45 were identified at the genus level and phylogenetically positioned based on 16S rRNA gene sequencing: 42 Bacillus (B. subtilis, B. cereus, B. thuringiensis, B. pumilus, B. megaterium, and Bacillus sp.) and 3 Methylobacterium komagatae. Random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) analysis showed a broad diversity among the Bacillus isolates, which clustered into 2 groups with 75% similarity and 13 subgroups with 85% similarity, suggesting that the genetic distance correlated with the source of isolation. The isolates were also analyzed for certain growth-promoting activities. Auxin synthesis was widely distributed among the isolates, with values ranging from 93.34 to 1653.37 μM auxin per μg of protein. The phosphate solubilization index ranged from 1.25 to 3.89, and siderophore index varied from 1.15 to 5.25. From a total of 57 isolates, 3 showed an ability to biologically fix atmospheric nitrogen, and 7 showed antagonism against the pathogen Sclerotinia sclerotiorum. The results of biochemical characterization allowed identification of potential candidates for the development of biofertilizers targeted to the sunflower crop.
