        Two new species of Chrysis Linnaeus (Hymenoptera, Chrysididae) from Iran

        The Iranian species in the Chrysis pulchella and C. varidens species groups are investigated. Six species are recognized, two of which are described for the first time: Chrysis gamberoonensis Farhad, Rosa and Talebi sp. nov. and Chrysis brunneamarginata Farhad, Rosa and Talebi sp. nov.. Chrysis gamberoonensis Farhad, Rosa and Talebi sp. nov. belongs to the C. pulchella group and is recognizable within this species group by its unique blue body coloration, scattered mesosoma punctures, polished pit row with elongated pits, and a small median tooth on the lateral edge of metasomal tergum 3. Chrysis brunneamarginata Farhad, Rosa and Talebi sp. nov. belongs to the C. varidens group and is recognizable by the usually colorless apical rim of metasomal tergum 3, and the unique shape of the anterior corners of the scutellum which are enlarged, thickened and directed backward covering the axillary trough. Dichotomous keys and distributional data for Iranian species included in these species groups are provided. Chrysis schwarzi Linsenmaier, 1968 is raised to species rank. The number of Iranian Chrysis species and subspecies is raised to 122.

        Monitoring the activities of Italian colposcopy clinics before and during the COVID-19 pandemic

        Objective: To evaluate the impact of healthcare reorganization during the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 pandemic on Italian colposcopy clinic activities, focusing on cervical excision procedures, follow-ups for conservative management of low-grade lesions, and follow-ups post cervical excision. Methods: Retrospective study conducted in 14 Italian colposcopy clinics. The number and clinical characteristics of cervical excisions, follow-ups for conservative management of low-grade lesions, and follow-ups after cervical excision were compared between the period March 1, 2019 to February 29, 2020 (pre-pandemic) and March 1, 2020 to February 28, 2021 (pandemic) with a Poisson regression analysis. Results: In the pandemic period, the number of cervical excisions was reduced by 8.8% (95% confidence interval [CI]=−15.6% to −2%; p=0.011). Excisions were less frequently performed in the operating room (−35.1%; 95% CI=−47.6% to −22.6%; p<0.001), the number of patients from spontaneous screening was reduced by −14.0% (95% CI=−23.4% to −4.6%; p=0.003), and the CO2-laser technique was used less frequently (−30%; 95% CI=−45.1% to −15.0%; p<0.001). As compared to the pre-pandemic period, the number of follow-ups for conservative management of low-grade lesions was reduced by −26.7% (95% CI=−39.0% to −14.4%; p<0.001), and the follow-up appointments after cervical excision were reduced by −51.0% (95% CI=−58.1% to −43.9%; p<0.001). Conclusion: The most significant impact of the healthcare reorganization during the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic was on follow-ups after cervical excision. The resumption of disrupted activities should follow a risk-based prioritization, starting from women in follow-up after cervical excision. It is advisable that the trend of performing cervical excision as an outpatient procedure is maintained in the post-pandemic period.

        Growth and Differentiation of Circulating Stem Cells After Extensive Ex Vivo Expansion

        Background: Stem cell therapy is gaining momentum as an effective treatment strategy for degenerative diseases. Adult stem cells isolated from various sources (i.e., cord blood, bone marrow, adipose tissue) are being considered as a realistic option due to their well-documented therapeutic potentials. Our previous studies standardized a method to isolate circulating multipotent cells (CMCs) that are able to sustain long term in vitro culture and differentiate towards mesodermal lineages. Methods: In this work, long-term cultures of CMCs were stimulated to study in vitro neuronal and myogenic differentiation. After induction, cells were analysed at different time points. Morphological studies were performed by scanning electron microscopy and specific neuronal and myogenic marker expression were evaluated using RT-PCR, flow cytometry and western blot. For myogenic plasticity study, CMCs were transplanted into in vivo model of chemically-induced muscle damage. Results: After neurogenic induction, CMCs showed characteristic dendrite-like morphology and expressed specific neuronal markers both at mRNA and protein level. The calcium flux activity of CMCs under stimulation with potassium chloride and the secretion of noradrenalin confirmed their ability to acquire a functional phenotype. In parallel, the myogenic potential of CMCs was confirmed by their ability to form syncytium-like structures in vitro and express myogenic markers both at early and late phases of differentiation. Interestingly, in a rat model of bupivacaine-induced muscle damage, CMCs integrated within the host tissue taking part in tissue repair. Conclusion: Overall, collected data demonstrated long-term cultured CMCs retain proliferative and differentiative potentials suggesting to be a good candidate for cell therapy.
