Background: To estimate the frequency of anaerobic bacteria and their susceptibility pattern during an 24 month period. Methods: 1639 specimens were studied retrospectively from empyemas, wounds, soft tissue, bone and joint infections, peritoneal and pleuritic fi uids, blood, stool and other infectious sites. All samples were cultured according to conventional methods in aerobic and anaerobic conditions. Identifi cation of anaerobic isolates was performed by VITEK2-compact (Bio Merieux). Antibiotic susceptibility testing was performed by ATB ANA (Bio Merieux). Results: 86(5,2%) anaerobic bacteria were isolated from 98 anaerobic cultures. 12 anaerobic cultures were polymicrobial. 46(53,4%) strains were Gram(+) anaerobic bacteria (2 Actinomyces spp.,8 Peptostreptococcus spp., 3 Bifidobacterium spp, 3 Propionibacterium Spp, 12 Clostridium spp, 3 finegoldia magna, 1 Lactobacillus gasseri) and 40(46.6%) strains were Gram(-) anaerobic bacteria (7 Bacteroides fragilis, 20 Bacteroides non-fragilis group, 9 Prevotella spp., 4 Veillonella spp. 36 strains were isolated from empyemas/ abscesses, 24 from wounds (soft tissue) infections, 4 from peritoneal fi uid infections, 1 from pleurical, 8 from blood, 1 from joint infection, and 12 from other sites. Susceptibility testing was performed to metronidazole, penicillin, piperacillin-tazobactam, imipenem, cefoxitin, ceftriaxone, clindamycin, tetracycline and erythromycin. Antimicrobial resistance Gram(+) Gram(-) Amoxicillin/Clavoulanic 2.1% 15% Metronidazole 10.8% 2.5% Clindamycin 23.9% 32.5% Cefoxitine 6.5% 25% Imipenem 0% 0% piperacillin-tazobactam 0% 0% Conclusions: 1) Frequency of isolation of anaerobic bacteria in infections was 5.2 % with most common pathogens: Bacteroides spp.(31.3%), followed by Clostridium spp. (13,9%), and Prevotella spp.(10.4%). 2) High resistance to clindamycin, was observed. All isolates were susceptible to imipenem and piperacillin-tazobactam. 3) Gram(-) strains were susceptible 97.5% to Metronidazole and gram(+) were susceptible 97.9% to Amoxicillin/Clavoulanic.

The linear regression method was used to model the relationship among a set of perceptions regarding to the importance of physical exercise and the perceived value of physical exercise (as a leisure activity) for aging baby boomers. In terms of a pilot study, we developed two alternative models tested at two different convenience samples. The first sample consisted of 82 aging baby boomers aged 55 65 (sample 1) and the second one consisted of 458 citizens aged 18 45 (sample 2). Through this research approach, we intended to lead to a better understanding of perceived value of physical exercise in the sporting goods marketing context for aging baby boomers. We addressed the core research themes of our study using a convenience survey. Data was collected by means of face to face interviews during the seven week period. The research results showed that the "model 2" better predicts perceived value of physical exercise as a leisure activity for aging baby boomers. We believe that the final findings of our research try can recognize the differences in buying behaviors between aging baby boomers and other target markets and advance marketers of sporting goods strategic tries regarding to consumer strategy management at a store level.
Sustainable energy action plans of medium-sized municipalities in north Greece

The covenant of Mayors initiative includes the commitment of the municipalities-signatories to reduce voluntarily the greenhouse gas emissions over 20--- by 2020 within their boundaries and obligates them to develop and submit an energy consumption analysis and a sustainable energy action plan within a year from the adhesion. The present paper discusses the energy profile of three medium-sized north-eastern Greek Municipalities (Kavala-MoK, Alexandroupolis-MoA, Drama-MoD) through the analysis of their municipal energy balance. The results of the total final energy consumption per capita include 14.10MWh/capita, 14.24MWh/capita and 12.91MWh/capita for MoK, MoA and MoD respectively. The analysis highlighted the increased energy consumption of the private sectors, namely residential and tertiary building sand private transport. The assessment of the municipalities' energy profiles along with examination of national regulations and action plans and investigation of best available practices within the Covenant of Mayors shaped the development of the sustainable energy action plans of the examined municipalities that is presented in this paper. The proposed pathway towards low-carbon municipalities can be considered a representative case study and a starting point for other municipalities with similar characteristics.

Meningitis-retention syndrome (MRS) is a clinical entity that has recently appeared in the literature. We present the case of a 22-year-old man with fever and headache who, in the course of his hospitalization with a diagnosis of aseptic meningitis, developed acute urinary retention. Fewer than 30 such cases have been described and in several of them, no clear associations with other disorders have been made. In some cases, direct association with viral infection has been proved, and in others, there are indications of an underlying demyelinating condition. To further complicate the issue, various conditions such as Elsberg syndrome and acute disseminated encephalomyelitis, which not only have some similarities but also have some distinct differences, have been placed under the umbrella definition of MRS. In our review, we attempt to address these conditions and better define MRS by establishing diagnostic criteria based on what has thus far been described in the literature.
Olive Leaf Extracts Are a Natural Source of Advanced Glycation End Product Inhibitors

Advanced glycation end products (AGEs), which are readily formed and accumulated with sustained hyperglycemia, contribute to the development of diabetic complications. As a consequence, inhibition of AGE formation constitutes an attractive therapeutic/preventive target. In the current study, we explored the phytochemical composition and the in vitro effect of two different olive leaf extracts (an aqueous and a methanolic) on AGE formation. The methanolic olive leaf extract inhibited fluorescent AGE formation in a bovine serum albumin (BSA)-ribose system, whereas the aqueous extract had no effect in both BSA-fructose and BSA-ribose systems. The phytochemical profile was investigated with liquid chromatographyultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) diode array coupled to electrospray ionization multistage mass spectrometry (LC/DAD/ESIMSn). Quantification of the major phenolic compounds was performed with high performance liquid chromatography with UV-Vis diode array detection and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. Among the major phenolic components (luteolin, hydroxytyrosol, luteolin-40-O-b-D-glucopyranoside, luteolin-7-O-b-D-glucopyranoside, and oleuropein), luteolin and luteolin-40-O-b-D-glucopyranoside were assigned as potent inhibitors of AGE formation. The extraction procedure greatly affects the composition and therefore the anti-glycation potential of olive leaves.
