Indigenous and Introduced: How Beef-eating Acceptance Affected the Cattle Industry in Modern Japan
NOMA Mariko 한국과학사학회 2022 한국과학사학회지 Vol.44 No.2
The intention of this paper is to describe how the cattle industry in Japan had changed with the introduction of beef eating habits. Before the Japanese Meiji Restoration, meat-eating had been formally prohibited. In practice, some people had opportunities to eat game, although livestock had been severely tabooed. In the Civilization and Enlightenment period of Japan, beef eating spread rapidly. It was mainly eaten in an indigenous cooking method called a beef “hot pot.” This cooking method influenced the development of beef fattening. In the pre-war period, farmers kept only a single cow for plowing, transporting, and collecting fertilizer, but the process of fattening was added later introduced to satisfy people's appetites for better-tasting beef. The goal of fattening had consistently been fatty meat. With the development of fattening technology, the ideal meat in the 1920s was fatty meat with intramuscular marbling. This beef-eating culture is inextricably linked with the fact that beef was first accepted as a hot pot dish in the modern era. Cattle fattening in developed areas took place within the conventional system of cattle rearing, which involved single cattle rearing system combined with arable agriculture. The fact that multiple cattle rearing based on the Western model did not take root is not seen as a delay in the modernization of Japanese livestock breeding, but rather as a technical and managerial rationale for combining single-head rearing practices with the utilization of that cattle for arable agriculture. Even though the indigenous cattle rearing system remained, the introduction of live cattle from colonial Korea brought complexities to the Japanese cattle industry. The importation of Korean cattle brought about a qualitative diversity as well as a quantitative expansion in terms of the supply of cheaper and leaner beef, and contributed to the change in consumption that has been termed the “popularization of meat eating.”
On Constructing an Explicit Algebraic Stress Model Without Wall-Damping Function
Noma Park,Jung Yul Yoo 대한기계학회 2002 JOURNAL OF MECHANICAL SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY Vol.16 No.11
In the present study, an explicit algebraic stress model is shown to be the exact tensor representation of algebraic stress model by directly solving a set of algebraic equations without resort to tensor representation theory. This repeals the constraints on the Reynolds stress, which are based on the principle of material frame indifference and positive semi-definiteness. An a priori test of the explicit algebraic stress model is carried out by using the DNS database for a fully developed channel flow at Rer = 135. It is confirmed that two-point correlation function between the velocity fluctuation and the Laplacians of the pressure-gradient i s anisotropic and asymmetric in the wall-normal direction. Thus, a novel composite algebraic Reynolds stress model is proposed and applied to the channel flow calculation, which incorporates non-local effect in the algebraic framework to predict near-wall behavior correctly.<br/>

This study uses the human resource management (HRM) practice and ability, motivation, and opportunities (AMO) theory and corporate social and environmental responsibility, to explore the effects of environmental responsible human resource management practice (ER-HRM) on energy-intensive manufacturing's green technology innovation and organizational effectiveness. A self-completed questionnaire was administered to managers of energy-intensive manufacturing in the Lao PDR. The data was collected from 198 managers of energy-intensive manufacturing for analysis. We used structural equation modeling (SEM) by smart PLS 3.0 to test the hypotheses in this research. The findings have shown a strong direct and positive impact of the environmental ability, motivation, and opportunity of ER-HRM practice on green technology innovation and organizational effectiveness. The ability of ER-HRM practice has the highest influence on green technology innovation and organizational effectiveness. The findings also prove the partial mediation of green technology innovation links ER-HRM with organizational effectiveness. This research is expected to identify the influences of ER-HRM in energy-intensive manufacturing to achieve innovation and performance while reducing emissions.
Late complications of nylon suture blepharoplasty causing ocular surface injury
Kazunami Noma,Yasuhiro Takahashi,Maria Suzanne Sabundayo,Hirohiko Kakizaki 대한미용의학회 2018 대한미용의학회지 Vol.2 No.1
Background: There are several known ocular complications of suture blepharoplasty which includes suture exposure, cyst formation, and surgical site infection. Objective: To present late complications of nylon suture blepharoplasty that causes damage to the ocular surface. Methods: Medical records of patients who developed ocular surface injury at least 1 year after nylon suture blepharoplasty were reviewed. Results: A total of 9 eyes (3 right and 6 left) of 9 patients (all females) were included in this study. All patients underwent trans-tarsal nylon suture blepharoplasty. The average age of the patients was 36.2 years (range: 22-64 years). The average interval between suture blepharoplasty and revision surgery was 9.6 years (range: 5-15 years). The mean follow-up period after revision surgery was 17 months (range: 7-48 months). Before revision surgery, all patients had reported ocular discomfort. Slit lamp examination revealed ocular surface injury caused by the presence of granulation tissue in the palpebral conjunctiva and deformity of the tarsal plate. Intraoperatively, suture exposure was absent in all but one eyelid. All of the symptoms completely disappeared postoperatively. Conclusion: Late complications of nylon suture blepharoplasty such as granulation tissue formation and tarsal plate deformity cause damage to the ocular surface. The trans-tarsal technique and hydrolytic denaturation of nylon sutures were considered as the main contributory factors leading to the mechanisms of ocular surface injury. Level of Evidence: Level IV, case series
