Two new species of Camellia (Theaceae) are described from Vietnam: Camellia vuquangensis Luong, Tran & L. T. Nguyen and Camellia hatinhensis Luong, Tran & L. T. Nguyen. The new taxa were col- lected from Vu Quang National Park in the center of Vietnam. The new finds are morphologically dissimilar to all known Camellia species. Recent Camellia discoveries have increased the number of species recorded in Viet- nam from 50 to 75, making Vietnam a center of diversity and a crucial area for more research into the diversity and distributions of Camellia.

Soluble epoxide hydrolases (sEH) are enzymes present in all living organisms, metabolize epoxy fatty acids to 1,2-diols. sEH in the metabolism of polyunsaturated fatty acids plays a key role in inflammation. In addition, the endogenous lipid mediators in cardiovascular disease are also broken down to diols by the action of sEH that enhanced cardiovascular protection. In this study, sEH inhibitory guided fractionation led to the isolation of five phenolic compounds trans-resveratrol (1), trans-piceatannol (2), sulfuretin (3), (+)-balanophonin (4), and cassigarol E (5) from the ethanol extract of the seeds of Passiflora edulis Sims cultivated in Vietnam. The chemical structures of isolated compounds were determined by the interpretation of NMR spectral data, mass spectra, and comparison with data from the literature. The soluble epoxide hydrolase (sEH) inhibitory activity of isolated compounds was evaluated. Among them, trans-piceatannol (2) showed the most potent inhibitory activity on sEH with an IC50 value of 3.4 mM. This study marks the first time that sulfuretin (3) was isolated from Passiflora edulis as well as (+)-balanophonin (4), and cassigarol E (5) were isolated from Passiflora genus.

Purpose Circulating tumor cell separation and analysis have played a critical role in cancer diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment. In this work, we aim to design and investigate a novel biochip that integrates dielectrophoresis, microfl uidic technology to separate circulating tumor cells from blood cells. To create a dielectrophoresis-induced non-uniform electric fi eld, a facing-electrode design was proposed and utilized, in which a slanted electrode array and a simple rectangular ground electrode are placed parallel on the top and bottom parts of the microfl uidic channel, respectively. This design can reduce the particle position dependence in the microchannel and the complexity of the microfabrication process. Methods The separation process, effi ciency, and optimization of the proposed device were numerically investigated using the fi nite element method. Parametric research was conducted to comprehensively examine the impact of various operating and design factors on the cell movement and trajectories in the microfl uidic device. Results The results indicated the potential of the proposed biochip to ensure cancer cell separation from blood cells with high effi ciency, high purity in a label-free, non-invasive, easy integration, and low-cost manner. Under the optimal conditions, the separation effi ciency reached 92%, 88%, and 96% for human colon cancer cells (HT-29), red blood cells, and white blood cells, respectively. Conclusions In this study, a novel DEP-based microfl uidic chip was proposed to separate HT-29 tumor cells from blood cells and numerically investigated to verify the performance of the biochip design. Our fi ndings could provide a foundation for further theoretical and practical investigations. The proposed system can separate cancer cells from red blood cells and white blood cells as well as off ers numerous advantages, such as compact size, low voltage, high effi ciency, non-invasiveness, and label-free nature. The tumor cell enrichment platform has the potential for application in cancer detection, analysis, and assessment.

Metabolites from medicinal plants continue to hold significant value in the exploration and advancement of novel pharmaceuticals. In the search for plants containing compounds with anti-inflammatory effects, we observed that the ethanol (EtOH) extract obtained from the aerial components of Gouania leptostachya DC. var. tonkinensis Pit. exhibited substantial suppression of nitric oxide (NO) in vitro. In a phytochemical study on an EtOH extract of G. leptostachya, 11 compounds were purified, including one unreported compound namely gouanioside A (1). Their chemical structures were unambiguously determined through the use of various spectroscopic techniques, such as 1 and 2D NMR, IR, and HR-ESI-MS, and by producing derivatives via chemical reactions. The EtOH extract, fractions, and a new compound exerted inflammatory effects by altering NO synthesis in murine RAW264.7 macrophage cells stimulated with lipopolysaccharide. The underlying inflammatory mechanism of the new compound 1 was also explored through various in vitro experiments. The results of this study indicate the potential usefulness of new compound 1 from G. leptostachya as a treatment for inflammatory diseases.

Mono, co- and tri-doped TiO2 thin films with the transition metals (vanadium and/or chrominium) and a nonmetal (nitrogen) have been fabricated by sol-gel method. X-ray diffraction results clearly reveal anatase crystal structure for all obtained samples and doping with any dopants doesn’t change the anatase phase of TiO2. Compared to TiO2, three types of doped TiO2 thin films exhibit a red-shift in the absorption edge and have much better photocatalytic properties for methylene blue degradation in visible light region. The maximum visible-photocatalytic performance was achieved for tri-doped TiO2 sample. The mechanism for enhancing visible-photocatalytic activity of co-doped and tri-doped TiO2 thin films was also examined.

<P>Amongst other requirements, a good anode for Li-ion battery applications must exhibit dimensional stability upon Li insertion, as well as chemical inertness with respect to the electrolyte. This latter characteristic is usually provided by the so-called solid electrolyte interphase (SEI), a passivating film that is formed at the end of the first lithiation step, originating from the partial reduction of the electrolyte and Li salt. However, silicon, which exhibits the highest known capacity for Li alloying, possesses none of the above attributes when used as an anode material. Actually, the large volume expansion of Si upon alloying with Li induces a mechanical instability of the SEI film, which therefore fails to provide its protective role. In this paper, we have studied the effect of thin alumina deposits on top of Si-based nanowires. A thin alumina deposit will act as a substitute for the SEI, preventing electrolyte decomposition. We observe that even if alumina films crack during lithiation–delithiation steps of the Si-based nanowires, they still provide some kind of protection, prolonging the lifetime of the anode. Using Al2O3-coated Si-based nanowires, we have been able to obtain a lifetime of 1280 cycles when the capacity of the anode was limited to 1200 mA h g−1. We also show that uncoated Si nanowires degrade more rapidly when cycled under identical conditions.</P> <P>Graphic Abstract</P><P>We have studied the effect of thin Al2O3 coatings on Si-based nanowires for Li-ion battery anodes.
