Graviola Fruit Bar Added Acerola By-Product Extract Protects Against Inflammation and Nociception in Adult Zebrafish (Danio rerio)

Larissa Morais Ribeiro da Silva,Jorgiane da Silva Severino Lima,Franscisco Ernani Alves Magalhaes,Adriana Rolim Campos,Jose Ismael Feitosa de Araujo,Francisco Lucas Alves Batista,Sandra Maria Barbosa 한국식품영양과학회 2020 Journal of medicinal food Vol.23 No.2

Studies involving foods associated with pain reversal and anti-inflammatory effects using zebrafish are rarely reported in the literature. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of graviola (Annona muricata L.) fruit bar (GFB) and GFB added with acerola (Malpighia glabra L) seed extract (ASE) on acute nociception and abdominal inflammation in adult zebrafish (Danio rerio). Acute nociception was induced by formalin, capsaicin, cinnamaldehyde, acidic saline, glutamate (cutaneous models), and hypertonic saline (corneal model), and inflammation was induced by carrageenan. Both GFB and ASE exhibited antinociceptive effect modulated by the nitrergic system, guanylate cyclase, and transient receptor potential ankyrin 1 and acid-sensing ion channels. The antinociceptive effect of GFB also appears to be modulated by the opioid system and glutamatergic receptors (N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor). Only ASE presented corneal antinociceptive effect. Both samples showed anti-inflammatory effect, being more significant the effect of GFB. The addition of acerola by-product extract in GFB results in a product with greater biological potential.

Roughness influence on the sheet resistance of the PEDOT:PSS printed on paper

        Rogerio M. Morais,Maykel S. Klem,Maíza S. Ozorio,Tiago C. Gomes,Neri Alves 한국물리학회 2018 Current Applied Physics Vol.18 No.2

The use of paper as a platform to manufacture organic electronic devices, electronic paper, has expanding potential for many applications because of several properties offered. In this work, we show a study of PEDOT:PSS printed by inkjet on bond paper, vegetal paper and sheets of PET. The relation between the surface density of the deposited material, morphology and resistivity was investigated for samples printed with a commercial Hewlett-Packard(HP)® printer and Microsoft Word® software. The amount of material deposited, i.e. surface density, was controlled using the print number in the same position and changing the gray scale used in the image formation. Changing the surface density of printed PEDOT:PSS, it is possible to produce a continuous film permeating the papers fibers. Sheet resistances obtained, when 7.0 mg cm−2 of PEDOT:PSS were deposited on the surfaces, were: (a) 413.2 kΩ/Sq for bond paper, (b) 5.6 kΩ/Sq for vegetable paper and (c) 2.3 kΩ/Sq for PET. The exponential dependence of sheet resistance with the surface density of printed material allows us to evaluate the strong influence of substrate roughness on PEDOT:PSS conductivity and to predict, for each one, conditions to minimize it.

      • Status Epilepticus in Children: Experience in a Portuguese Tertiary Hospital

        Catarina Granjo Morais,Marta João Silva,Teresa Cunha Mota,Ruben Rocha,Augusto Ribeiro 대한소아신경학회 2023 대한소아신경학회지 Vol.31 No.3

Purpose: Status epilepticus (SE) is a life-threatening neurological emergency, frequently diagnosed in pediatric patients. We aimed to characterize our pediatric cases of SE in an 11-year period according to the 2015 International League Against Epilepsy report. Methods: Clinical electronic records were retrospectively reviewed. All pediatric SE cases admitted from January 2010 to December 2020 were included, excluding neonates. SE was considered refractory if it persisted despite the administration of two appropriate antiseizure medications at acceptable doses. Results: We included 102 episodes, 55 (53.9%) in boys. The median age was 2.5 years (interquartile range, 1.3 to 5.0). Most episodes were classified as SE with prominent motor features (92.2%), and the most frequent etiological classification was acute symptomatic cause (84.3%). A benzodiazepine was used as the first-line antiseizure medication in 99 (97%) cases, of which diazepam was preferred (93%). The preferred second-line medication was phenytoin (65.7%). Midazolam was the most frequently responsible for termination of SE when given in a continuous infusion (47%). Episodes of SE were classified as refractory in 81 (79.4%) cases. Episodes of >60 minutes were more frequent in patients diagnosed with epilepsy (P=0.036), focal motor SE (P60 minutes), which reinforces the significance of the underlying neurological disease and semiological standardization in pediatric SE.

A Computer Vision System for Pallets Verification in Quality Control

Marcus Vinicius Barbosa de Morais,Sara Dereste dos Santos,Ricardo Pires 한국정밀공학회 2023 International Journal of Precision Engineering and Vol.24 No.7

Flexible manufacturing systems have gained their place in industries thanks to the possibility of being adapted to a particular task. A robotized palletizing cell is an example of such a system, which is responsible for organizing and stacking loads to be transported. A key part in this process is the pallet and if it presents a problem, the whole cell may stop. Furthermore, it is possible that manipulator robots, transported loads, and any other part of the cell suffer damage. To avoid these problems, the objective of this work is to develop an artificial vision system capable of selecting wood pallets that are in good condition, which means free of defects such as splinters, cracks and broken or out of dimensions elements. The artificial vision system has been developed based on image processing and machine learning techniques and presented better results compared to the past studies. Image processing parameters of Canny and Hough Transform have been adjusted, followed by comparisons among Support-Vector Machines with different kernels and their parameters. An accuracy of 100% in the classification has been obtained based on the Support-Vector Machine with radial basis function kernel.

Comparative analysis of bond strength to root dentin and compression of bioceramic cements used in regenerative endodontic procedures

Rodrigues Maykely Naara Morais,Bruno Kely Firmino,Alencar Ana Helena Gonçalves de,Silva Julyana Dumas Santos,Siqueira Patrícia Correia de,Decurcio Daniel de Almeida,Estrela Carlos 대한치과보존학회 2021 Restorative Dentistry & Endodontics Vol.46 No.4

Objectives This study compared the Biodentine, MTA Repair HP, and Bio-C Repair bioceramics in terms of bond strength to dentin, failure mode, and compression. Materials and Methods Fifty-four slices obtained from the cervical third of 18 single-rooted human mandibular premolars were randomly distributed (n = 18). After insertion of the bioceramic materials, the push-out test was performed. The failure mode was analyzed using stereomicroscopy. Another set of cylindrically-shaped bioceramic samples (n = 10) was prepared for compressive strength testing. The normality of data distribution was analyzed using the Shapiro-Wilk test. The Kruskal-Wallis and Friedman tests were used for the push-out test data, while compressive strength was analyzed with analysis of variance and the Tukey test, considering a significance level of 0.05. Results Biodentine presented a higher median bond strength value (14.79 MPa) than MTA Repair HP (8.84 MPa) and Bio-C Repair (3.48 MPa), with a significant difference only between Biodentine and Bio-C Repair. In the Biodentine group, the most frequent failure mode was mixed (61%), while in the MTA Repair HP and Bio-C Repair groups, it was adhesive (94% and 72%, respectively). Biodentine showed greater resistance to compression (29.59 ± 8.47 MPa) than MTA Repair HP (18.68 ± 7.40 MPa) and Bio-C Repair (19.96 ± 3.96 MPa) (p < 0.05). Conclusions Biodentine showed greater compressive strength than MTA Repair HP and Bio-C Repair, and greater bond strength than Bio-C Repair. The most frequent failure mode of Biodentine was mixed, while that of MTA Repair HP and Bio-C Repair was adhesive. Zingiber officinale Roscoe (Ginger) as a Complementary Option for Clinical Treatment of Endometriosis: An Experimental Study in Rats

José Meneses de Morais Filho,João Nogueira Neto,Lyvia Maria Rodrigues de Sousa Gomes,Izabelle Smith Fraza˜o Ramos,Salie Santos Rodrigues Oliveira,George Castro F. Melo,Lucilene Amorim Silva,Ed Carlos 한국식품영양과학회 2021 Journal of medicinal food Vol.24 No.4

Endometriosis was induced (autotransplant) in Wistar rats. After 21 days, the rats were randomly divided into two groups (16 female rats each). Control group was forced-fed 0.9% sodium chloride solution, and the ginger group was forced-fed 0.5 mg/100 g of Zingiber officinale Roscoe fresh extract, both by gavage, for 14 days, in addition to their normal diet. After that, an anesthetic dose (ketamine/xylazine) was administered until euthanasia. Peritoneal lavage fluid was collected to evaluate tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α and interleukin (IL)-6, and autotransplant was measured and excised to evaluate histology. The final mean volumes were larger in the control group (120.92 mm3 ± 78.91) than in the ginger group (40.50 mm3 ± 19.57) (P = .01). The endometriosis foci increased in the control group from 45.10 mm3 ± 29.96 at 21 days postimplantation to 120.92 mm3 ± 78.91 on the day of euthanasia (P = .02). In the ginger group, a slight increase was observed from 38.43 mm3 ± 19.96 to 40.50 mm3 ± 19.57, without statistical difference (P = .83). In addition, a greater increase in growth of the endometriosis foci was found when compared with the control (75.81 mm3 ± 58.95) and ginger groups (2.07 mm3 ± 18.87) (P = .004). No difference was found in TNF-α (P = .51) and in IL-6 (P = .12). The degree of lesion atrophy was higher in the ginger group (1 ± 0.92) than in the control group (2.25 ± 1.16) (P = .03). The ginger extract reduced and atrophied autotransplanted endometriosis foci, but did not reduce IL-6 and TNF-α in the peritoneal lavage fluid.

Time and Frequency Domain Analysis of Wind Turbine Towers Under Spatially Correlated Wind Field

Dodani Renan de Morais,Lucas Carminatti Foschiera,Herbert Martins Gomes 한국강구조학회 2021 International Journal of Steel Structures Vol.21 No.6

This work proposes a methodology to evaluate the dynamic behavior of Wind Turbine Towers (WTT) taking into account the eff ects of wind on its structural components (tower, nacelle, and blades). A model to generate wind velocity signals that are correlated in time and space is adopted, following a usual von Kármán Power Spectral Density (PSD) which has parameters such as turbulence intensities and standard deviations of the wind speed fl uctuations in the three directions, velocity profi le with height, and decay coeffi cients of the coherence with the distance between the points of simulation. It is investigated whether the time domain (TD) or frequency domain (FD) analysis is adequate in terms of simulation time, accuracy and computational costs for the evaluation of RMS values of acceleration and displacement signals at specifi c points of the WTT as well as base reactions. In FD the direct integration of specifi c PSD (displacements, accelerations, etc.) is employed. Results for a typical simulation are investigated and compared in diff erent situations of wind speed and wind parameters for the simulation of the dynamic behavior of the WTT. The results present the importance of the spatial simulation of wind velocity correlation to account for important fi nal structural behavior.

The Music Within: A Doppler Harmonic Pattern Report in Non-Subarachnoid Hemorrhage Related Cerebral Vasospasm

Alessandra Braga Cruz Guedes de Morais,George Nilton Nunes Mendes,Ana Silvia Sobreira Lima Verde,Adson Freitas de Lucena,Francisco José Arruda Mont’Alverne,Fabricio Oliveira Lima,Fernanda Martins Maia 대한신경초음파학회 2023 대한신경초음파학회지 (JNN) Vol.15 No.2

A 40-year-old male presented an episode of severe thunderclap headache with right hemiparesis. Imaging revealed severe stenosis in the left middle cerebral artery, associated with increased mean velocities detected by Transcranial Doppler Ultrasound (TCD). Notably, a distinctive "tin whistle" sound, known as a doppler harmonic effect, near the highest velocity point was observed during the examination. Extensive workup was performed, including CSF analysis and laboratory investigations, and the diagnosis of Reversible Cerebral Vasoconstriction Syndrome (RCVS) was established. Treatment involving medication and daily monitoring led to a decline in the left MCA's velocity, enabling the patient's discharge with no recurrent headaches or neurological deficits. Notably, a follow-up MRI exhibited the disappearance of the left MCA stenosis. This report discusses the rare occurrence of "musical murmurs" in cerebrovascular diseases, underscoring the potential for early diagnosis using techniques like TCD in emergency settings, particularly in conditions like RCVs.
