Ultrasensitive Detection of Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes Using Surface Plasmon Resonance
Jang, Daeho,Na, Wonhwi,Kang, Minwook,Kim, Namjoon,Shin, Sehyun American Chemical Society 2016 ANALYTICAL CHEMISTRY - Vol.88 No.1
<P>Because single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) are known to be a potentially dangerous material, inducing cancers and other diseases, any possible leakage of SWNTs through an aquatic medium such as drinking water will result in a major public threat. To solve this problem, for the present study, a highly sensitive, quantitative detection method of SWNTs in an aqueous solution was developed using surface plasmon resonance (SPR) spectroscopy. For a highly sensitive and specific detection, a strong affinity conjugation with biotin streptavidin was adopted on an SPR sensing mechanism. During the pretreatment process, the SWNT surface was functionalized and hydrophilized using a thymine-chain based biotinylated single-strand DNA linker (B-ssDNA) and bovine serum albumin (BSA). The pretreated SWNTs were captured on a sensing film, the surface of which was immobilized with streptavidin on biotinylated gold film. The captured SWNTs were measured in real-time using SPR spectroscopy. Specific binding with SWNTs was verified through several validation experiments. The present method using an SPR sensor is capable of detecting SWNTs of as low as 100 fg/mL, which is the lowest level reported thus far for carbon-nanotube detection. In addition, the SPR sensor showed a linear characteristic within the range of 100 pg/mL to 200 ng/mL. These findings imply that the present SPR sensing method can detect an extremely low level of SWNTs in an aquatic environment with high sensitivity and high specificity, and thus any potential leakage of SWNTs into an aquatic environment can be precisely monitored within a couple of hours.</P>

The purpose of this study was to identify support plans to enhance career guidance competency of university faculty, and then examine the required and current levels of the derived support plans to find out which plan should be supported first. To achieve this goal, we conducted an open questionnaire survey for 26 experts to derive a list of support plans, and then surveyed the current level and required level of the support plans for 301 4-year university professors nationwide. The results of this study are as follows. First, as a result of conducting needs analysis for support plans at national level, ‘Establishment of information system for career guidance, job, and start-up at national level’, ‘Developing and disseminating materials at national level such as how to provide career guidance to students and how to improve their employment competency’, ‘Building and providing a pool of external experts to strengthen education in industry-academia cooperation major’, ‘Operation of financial support projects to enhance students" career competency’, ‘Expanding policy support for field training and industry-academia cooperation expansion’, ‘Establishing a collaborative network through support for the relevant councils such as the students’ employment department, employment support center, and start-up support center’ were derived as the top priority support plans. Second, as a result of conducting needs analysis for support plans at university level, ‘Providing activity and education & training expenses for facilitating career guidance of professors’ and ‘Recognition of career guidance performance as research, lecture and volunteer hours, or work hours’ were derived as the top priority support plans. Based on these results, we suggested follow-up studies to promote career guidance of university faculty and enhance their competency.
Pseudo actinometry for the measurement of reactive species density
Kang, Minwook,Ko, Yunhyeok,Jang, Il-yong,Jung, Junhwa,Hahn, Jae W. Optical Society of America 2017 Optics letters Vol.42 No.7
<P>To compensate for the effect of plasma parameters in the signal of optical emission spectroscopy, we should normalize the emission intensity from the species against that of an inert gas (i.e., the actinometer). In many plasma processes in the semiconductor industry, plasma etching without using a neutral gas for the actinometer has become popular to achieve better critical dimension uniformity. We propose 'pseudo actinometry' for normalization in the absence of an inert gas in the process plasma. Based on the theory of optical actinometry, we define a correction factor as the ratio of the emission intensity to the number density of the inert gas. As we reduced the density of the inert gas, we experimentally determined the correction factor by taking its convergence when the concentration of the inert gas was zero. As proof of concept, we applied pseudo actinometry to measure the density distribution of atomic chlorine in a photomask etching process without an inert gas. By comparing the distributions of chlorine radicals and the etch rate as measured by an ellipsometer, we calculated the correlation coefficient between the distributions. The correlation coefficient rapidly decreased to 0.60 when we used the correction factor determined at a flow rate for the inert gas of 20 standard cubic centimeters per minute at STP. By using pseudo actinometry, we successfully determined the distribution of chlorine radicals with a correlation coefficient of 0.98 in a plasma etching process without an inert gas. Hierarchical Hybrid Nanostructures Constructed by Fullerene and Molecular Tweezer
Park, Minwook,Hong, Kyeong-Im,Kang, Minji,Kim, Tae-Wook,Lee, Hosoowi,Jang, Woo-Dong,Jeong, Kwang-Un American Chemical Society 2019 ACS NANO Vol.13 No.5
<P>For the construction of well-defined hierarchical superstructures of pristine [60]fullerene (C60) arrays, pyrene-based molecular tweezers (PT) were used as host molecules for catching and arranging C60 guest molecules. The formation of host-guest complexes was systematically studied in solution as well as in the solid state. Two-dimensional proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopic studies revealed that PT-host and C60-guest complexes were closely related to the molecular self-assembly of PT. Ultraviolet and fluorescence spectroscopic titrations indicated the formation of stable 1:1 and 2:1 (PT/C60) complexes. From the nonlinear curve-fitting analysis, equilibrium constants for the 1:1 (log <I>K</I>1) and 2:1 (log <I>K</I>2) complexes were estimated to be 4.96 and 5.01, respectively. X-ray diffraction results combined with transmission electron microscopy observations clearly exhibited the construction of well-defined layered superstructures of the PT-host and C60-guest complexes. From electron mobility measurements, it was demonstrated that the well-defined hierarchical hybrid nanostructure incorporating a C60 array exhibited a high electron mobility of 1.7 × 10-2 cm2 V-1 s-1. This study can provide a guideline for the hierarchical hybrid nanostructures of host-guest complex and its applications.</P> [FIG OMISSION]</BR>
