Chromium and bromide ions inside the artificial crevice of Fe-lB%Cr-12%Ni-2%Mo alloy was successfully investigated by the in situ X-ray Absorption Fine Structure (XAFS) measurement. A cross-section of 0. lmm thick stainless steel foil sandwiched with Kapton films attached solution reservoir above contained 1M LiBr solution was dissolved at 0.W (vs. Ag/AgCl) to form the artificial crevice. When the crevice reached several mm in depth, concentrations and coordination states of dissolved chromium ion and bromide ion were investigated by the transmission XAFS measurement, which was carried out at BL-7C in Photon Factory, KEK, JAPAN. Concentrations of chromium and bromide ions inside the artificial crevice were almost lineally decreased from metal/solution interface towards bulk solution. A concentration of bromide ion at the metal/solution interface was estimated as approximately 10M, which was close to solubility of FeBr₂. Coordination states of dissolved chromium ion and bromide ion were also investigated at different positions from the metal/solution interface inside the artificial crevice, close to interface, the middle of the crevice and close to bulk solution. No change of coordination states of chromium ion was observed. Structures of bromide ion, on the other hand, were changed with positions. Distance between bromide ion and the nearest ion near the interface was shorter than those at middle of the artificial crevice or position close to bulk solution. These results are consistent with a theory that the change of the distance from bromide ion to the nearest atoms might relate to a formation of hydrobromo-complex near the metal/solution interface.

Objective: This open-label study examined the effects of ramelteon on cognitive functions in 10 outpatients with schizophrenia. Methods: Ramelteon (8 mg/day) was administered to 10 patients with schizophrenia for six months. The verbal fluency test,Trail-Making Test, the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test, the Stroop Test, the Digit Span Distraction Test, Iowa Gambling Task, theRey Auditory Verbal Learning Test were evaluated at baseline and 6 months after treatment with ramelteon. Results: Ramelteon improved significantly the scores of Rey Auditory Verbal Learning Test. Additionally, ramelteon exerted improvementsin the verbal fluency and Iowa Gambling Task in 4 patients. Conclusion: Ramelteon could be a potential therapeutic drug, in adjunctive treatment of learning and memory deficits seenin patients with schizophrenia.

Study Design: A retrospective study. Purpose: To compare clinical and radiological outcomes between bilateral C2 pedicle screwing (C2PS) and unilateral C2PS, combined with contralateral C2 laminar screwing (LS), for posterior atlantoaxial fixation. Overview of Literature: Posterior fixation with C1 lateral mass screwing (C1LMS) and C2PS (C1LMS–C2PS method) is an accepted procedure for rigid atlantoaxial stabilization. However, conventional bilateral C2PS is not always allowed in this method due to anatomical variations of C2 pedicles and/or asymmetry of the vertebral artery. Although unilateral C2PS plus contralateral LS (C2PS+LS) is an alternative in such cases, the efficacy of this procedure has not been evaluated in controlled studies (i.e., with bilateral C2PS as a control). Methods: Clinical and radiological records of patients who underwent the C1LMS–C2PS method, using unilateral C2PS+LS (n=9), and those treated using conventional bilateral C2PS (n=10) were compared, with a minimum two years follow-up. Results: Postoperative complications related to the unilateral C2PS+LS technique included one case of spontaneous spinous process fracture of C2. A C1 anterior arch fracture occurred after a fall in one patient, who underwent bilateral C2PS and C1 laminectomy. No significant differences were seen between the groups in reduction of neck pain after surgery or improvement of neurological status, as evaluated using the Japanese Orthopaedic Association score. A delayed union occurred in one patient each of the groups, with the final fusion rate being 100% in both groups. Conclusions: Clinical and radiological outcomes of unilateral C2PS+LS were comparable with those of the bilateral C2PS fixation technique for the C1LMS-C2PS method.

Research into first episode psychosis (FEP) is a growing field in psychiatry. In this paper, the authors provide an overview of neurocognitive findings and therapeutic approaches indicated for patients with FEP. Focus will be placed on evidence from neuropsychological assessment and brain imaging of electrophysiological activities, as well as the ability of some psychotropic drugs, such as second generation antipsychotics, to improve functional outcome. Efforts to identify biological signals characteristic of FEP are expected to facilitate early intervention into schizophrenia and related disorders.

Objectives: Glucocorticoid (GC) treatment inhibits activation of runt-related transcription factor 2 (Runx2), which is essential for osteoblast differentiation from stem cells. As a result, GC treatment results in bone loss, GC-induced osteoporosis (GIO), elevated fracture risk, and delayed bone healing. Bisphosphonates such as alendronate (ALN) are recommended for treating or preventing GIO, and lowintensity pulsed ultrasound (LIPUS) facilitates fracture healing and maturation of regenerated bone. Combined therapy with ALN and LIPUS may stimulate cancellous bone healing in GIO rats. Here, we examined the effect of ALN and LIPUS on cancellous bone osteotomy repair in the proximal tibia of GIO rats. Methods: Prednisolone (10 mg/kg body weight/day) was administered for 4 weeks to induce GIO in 6- month-old female Sprague-Dawley rats. Tibial osteotomy was then performed and daily subcutaneous injection of ALN (1-mg/kg body weight) was subsequently administered alone or in combination with LIPUS (20 min/day) for 2 or 4 weeks. Results: ALN significantly increased bone mineral density (BMD) at 2 and 4 weeks, and ALN þ LIPUS significantly increased BMD at 4 weeks. Bone union rates were significantly increased after 2 and 4 weeks ALN and ALN þ LIPUS treatment. Lastly, ALN and ALN þ LIPUS significantly increased the proportion of Runx2 positive cells at 4 weeks. Conclusions: ALN monotherapy and combined ALN and LUPUS treatment augmented BMD and stimulated cancellous bone repair with increased Runx2 expression at the osteotomy site in GIO rats. However, the combined treatment had no additional effect on cancellous bone healing compared to ALN monotherapy. © 2017 The Korean Society of Osteoporosis. Publishing services by Elsevier B.V.
