      • A Study on Adaptive Direction Teaching-Learning-Based Optimization Algorithm

        In the real life learning process, the teacher communicates with the students for a better learning outcome. The teaching-learning-based optimization (TLBO) algorithm simulates this procedure and shows its great performance in solving the constrained and unconstrained nonlinear optimization problem. This paper presents an adaptive direction strategy(ADS )t o improve the searching ability for the TLBO algorithm. The improved algorithm is tested through searching the optimal points for a few typical testing functions. The testing result shows that the improved TLBO algorithm could obtain better optimal solutions in shorter time. Compared to the normal TLBO algorithm, the stability and effectiveness of the improved algorithm are increased greatly.

        Protective Effect of Exogenous Spermidine on Ion and Polyamine Metabolism in Kentucky bluegrass under Salinity Stress

        Spermidine (Spd) acts as a plant protectant under salinity stress. The objective of this study was to determine whether exogenous Spd pre-treatment could improve the salinity tolerance of Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis L.). Exogenous Spd was applied before the grass was exposed to 200 mM sodium chloride (NaCl) for 28 d in the growth chamber. Salinity stress decreased chlorophyll (Chl) content, K+/Na+ratio and K+, Ca2+, and Mg2+ contents, and increased electrolyte leakage (EL), proline, Na+, putrescine (Put), Spd and Spermine (Spm) levels and the activities of arginine decarboxylase (ADC), ornithine decarboxylase (ODC), S-adenosylmethionine decarboxylase (SAMDC) and polyamine oxidase (PAO). Pre-treatment with 1 mM Spd effectively alleviated the decline of Chl content, K+/Na+ratio and K+, Ca2+, and Mg2+ contents under salinity stress conditions. Spd pre-treatment also reduced EL, Na+ content, Put levels and the activities of ADC and PAO, but increased proline content, endogenous Spd and Spm levels and the activities of ODC and SAMDC upon salinity stress. These results indicate that exogenous Spd pre-treatment could enhance salinity tolerance by increasing proline levels and regulating ion and polyamine metabolism.

        All-organic superhydrophobic coating with anti-corrosion, anti-icing capabilities and prospective marine atmospheric salt-deliquesce self-coalesce protective mechanism

        Water-repellent and interfacial non-wetting superhydrophobicity has great potential to addresscorrosion/icing-induced material-deterioration problems. Herein, an all-organic superhydrophobic coatingwas constructed using facile and substrate-independent spray-coating method based on PTFE andPDMS. FE-SEM, EDS, and XPS techniques were used to analyze the surface topographies and chemicalcompositions. The coating exhibits superior anti-fouling and self-cleaning properties against various liquidand solid contaminants due to the synergic effect of low surface energy and hierarchical structures. The EIS and potentiodynamic polarization results show improved charge transfer resistance (Rct), positiveshifted corrosion potential (Ecorr), and decreased corrosion current density (Icorr), implying significantlyenhanced anti-corrosion performance with 99.83 % inhibition efficiency. Besides, the delay rate of icefreezingtime of the coating is 232 % at 5C, 137 % at 10 C and 204 % at 15 C compared withuncoated Q235 substrate respectively. The ice adhesion strength of the coating accounts for only6.55 % at 5C, 7.03 % at 10 C and 9.35 % at 15 C than that of the bare Q235 carbon steel, demonstratingultra-low ice adhesion force and anti-icing capabilities. The hygroscopic and deliquesce behaviorsof NaCl salt particles reveal an intriguing salt-deliquescence self-coalescence phenomenon andprospective anti-corrosion mechanism for superhydrophobic materials in high-humidity marine atmosphericenvironments.

        Effect of Gas Sensing Properties by Sn-Rh Codoped ZnO Nanosheets

        The hierarchically porous Sn-Rh codoped ZnO, Sn-doped ZnO and pureZnO nanosheets have been successfully synthesized through a simplehydrothermal reaction process without any surfactant or template at 180°C. The morphology and composition were carefully characterized by X-raydiffraction, energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer, field emission scanningelectronic microscopy and BET. The gas-sensing testing results indicatedthat the Sn-Rh codoped ZnO nanosheets, with the specific surface area was26.9 m2/g, exhibited enhanced gas-sensing performance compared withthat of pure ZnO and Sn-doped ZnO. The high sensitivity of the sensorbased on Sn-Rh codoped ZnO was 149.38 to 100 ppm ethanol and thedetection limit was less than 5 ppm (5.8). The response and recovery timeswere measured to be ~3 s and ~10 s when exposed to 100 ppm ethanol atthe test temperature of 300°C. The good sensing performance of the Sn-Rhcodoped ZnO sensor indicated that hierarchically porous Sn-Rh codopedZnO could be a promising candidate for highly sensitive gas sensors.
