        Perioperative Evaluation of Respiratory Muscle Strength after Scoliosis Correction in Patients with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy

        Study Design: Retrospective cohort study. Purpose: To investigate the effect of spinal correction on respiratory muscle strength in patients with Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD). Overview of Literature: Several studies have reported that scoliosis correction in patients with DMD does not improve pulmonary function. In these studies, pulmonary function was evaluated using the traditional spirometric values of percent vital capacity (%VC) and percent forced vital capacity (%FVC). However, traditional spirometry may not be suitable for patients with DMD because the results can be influenced by patient fatigue or level of understanding. Therefore, we evaluated respiratory function focusing on respiratory muscle strength using maximal inspiratory pressure (MIP), maximal expiratory pressure (MEP), and sniff nasal inspiratory pressure (SNIP), in addition to %VC and %FVC. Methods: We retrospectively reviewed 16 patients with DMD who underwent spinal correction surgery between 2006 and 2011 at Kitasato University Hospital. All patients were males, and the mean age was 13.5 years. Respiratory muscle strength was evaluated using MIP, MEP, and SNIP. Measurements were obtained preoperatively and at 1 and 6 months postoperatively, and %VC and %FVC were obtained preoperatively and within 6 months postoperatively. Results: The mean preoperative and postoperative %VC values were 54.0% and 51.7%, whereas the mean %FVC values were 53.9% and 53.2%, respectively. The mean MIP, MEP, and SNIP values obtained preoperatively and at 1 and 6 months postoperatively were as follows: MIP, 40.5, 42.7 and 47.2 cm H2O; MEP, 26.0, 28.0, and 29.0 cm H2O; and SNIP, 33.4, 33.0, and 33.0 cm H2O; respectively. The mean MIP and MEP values significantly improved postoperatively. There were no significant differences in SNIP, %VC, or %FVC preand postoperatively. Conclusions: By focusing on respiratory muscle strength, our results suggest that scoliosis correction in patients with DMD might have a favorable effect on respiratory function.

        This paper aims at generating desired feedforward torque for a specified motion by reuse of time-series to rque data acquired by the iterative learning control. The suggested method named motion-scalet rans for mation realizes a motion to an arbitrarily specified posture of a two-DOF planar robot arm on the basis of arithmetical operations of time-series to rque of only four motions. The algorism is theoretically presented, and the effectiveness is confirmed in experiments. It is shown by the experimental results that the trajectory tracking error so fangular velocities by the motion-scalet rans formationt end to be smaller than those by the computed to rque method.

        Measurement of Neutron Capture Cross-Sections and Capture ggamma-ray Spectra of {161,162,163,164}^Dy at 550 keV

        The neutron capture cross-sections and capture-ray spectra of 161;162;163;164Dy were measuredat a neutron energy of 550 keV by using the 3-MV Pelletron accelerator of the Research Laboratoryfor Nuclear Reactors at the Tokyo Institute of Technology. A neutron time-of-ight method wasadopted with a 1.5-ns pulsed neutron source using the 7Li(p,n)7Be reaction, and a large anti-Compton NaI(Tl)-ray spectrometer was used. A pulse-height weighting technique was applied tothe observed capture-ray pulse-height spectra to derive the capture yields. The measured capturecross-sections were 0.221 0.016, 0.110 0.007, 0.119 0.008, and 0.037 0.005 (barn) for 161Dy,162Dy, 163Dy, and 164Dy, respectively. The present results were in good agreement with previousmeasurements. However, the evaluated values of ENDF/B-VI for 162;164Dy were more than threetimes higher than our measurements. The capture-ray spectra were obtained by unfolding theobserved capture-ray pulse-height spectra.       • 침대매트리스의 열대류 공간 확산을 고려한 화염전파 모델 도출

        건축물내 공간에서 발생하는 화재는 공간의 구조나 가연물의 조건에 따라 화재 성상이 좌우되기 때문에 다양한 실험에 따른 데이터베이스 축적이 필요하다. 가연물의 연소 실험은 점화시간, 열방출률, 화염확산속도, 화염이동거리 등 실험을 통하여 다양한 요인이 측정되고 있다. 하지만, 초기화재에서 성기화재로 확대되는 과정을 예측하는데 공학적 모델이 충분하게 확립되어 있다고 말하기는 어렵다. 본 논문은 매트리스의 설치높이가 매트리스의 연소 거동에 미치는 영향을 확인하고, 화염확산속도 예측에 대한 기존 계산 모델을 수정함으로써 좀 더 실용 가능한 화염확산속도 모델식을 구축하였다. 실험은 자유공간에서 실시하였고, 매트리스의 열방출량을 측정하였으며, 매트리스의 표면과 이면의 화염확산속도는 온도 측정과 비디오 영상을 통하여 확인하였다. 실험 결과 매트리스 설치높이가 높을수록 화재성장속도와 최대 열방출속도가 증가하는 것으로 나타났다. 또한, 매트리스에서 시작된 화염은 매트리스 소재를 녹여 바닥에 연소적하물을 생기게 하고, 이러한 연소적하물로부터 화염은 매트리스 자체의 화염과 합쳐지면서 열방출량과 화염높이가 높아졌다. 따라서, 매트리스의 설치높이에 따른 연소 거동은 용융된 적하물질의 연소에 영향을 받는다고 생각된다. 연소시 적하물에 의해 생긴 화염은 매트리스의 화염확산속도를 가속화했을 가능성이 있다. 일반적으로 화염확산속도는 화염에 인접한 복사의 영향으로 매트리스 상부 표면에 입사하는 열유속에 의해 결정되지만, 우리는 매트리스의 수직 단면으로의 열기류에 의한 대류열유속과 화염에 의한 복사열유속 모두의 영향을 고려하여 기존에 제안된 모델을 수정하였다.
