An annotated catalog of Iranian Symphypleona and Neelipleona (Hexapoda: Collembola): new records and key to species

        Mahmood Mehrafrooz Mayvan,Hussein Sadeghi-Namaghi,Masoumeh Shayanmehr,Penelope Greenslade 국립중앙과학관 2021 Journal of Asia-Pacific Biodiversity Vol.14 No.4

This article provides an annotated catalog of the Symphypleona and Neelipleona (Hexapoda: Collembola)of Iran based on published literature and specimens recently collected from three different ecosystems inNorth Khorasan province (Forest, Rangeland, and Agricultural) of the years 2018 and 2019. Thirty-fivespecies in seven families and 17 genera are listed. Among them, Megalothorax minimus and Bourletiellasp. are recorded for the first time from Iran. An updated key to the Iranian species and information on thebiology and geographical distribution of each species is provided.

Numerical simulation of non-Newtonian models effect on hemodynamic factors of pulsatile blood flow in elastic stenosed artery

Mehdi Jahangiri,Mohsen Saghafian,Mahmood Reza Sadeghi 대한기계학회 2017 JOURNAL OF MECHANICAL SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY Vol.31 No.2

Atherosclerosis develops due to different hemodynamic factors, among which time-averaged Wall shear stress (mean WSS) and Oscillatory shear index (OSI) are two of the most important. These two factors not only depend on flow geometry, but are also influenced by rheological characteristics of blood. Since analytical solutions are limited to simple problems and since experimental tests are costly and time consuming, CFD solutions been prominently and effectively used to solve such problems. We conducted a numerical study via ADINA 8.8 software on the non-Newtonian pulsatile flow of blood through an elastic blood artery with single and consecutive stenosis. The studied stenosis cross sectional area was 70 % that of the unstenosed artery. The single stenosis results were compared with the consecutive stenosis results. The five non-Newtonian flow models, the Carreau model, the Carreau-Yasuda model, the modified Casson model, the power-law model, and the generalized power-law model, were used to model the non-Newtonian blood flow. The obtained results showed that increasing the number of stenoses would lead to reduced length of the oscillatory area after the first stenosis, thus forming another oscillatory area with a larger length after the second stenosis. Thus, a consecutive stenosis would develop a larger disease prone area. Upon examining the mean WSS and OSI, we found that, as compared with the other models, the modified Casson model and the power-law model produced predictions for the most extent of damage to endothelial cells and the most disease prone areas, respectively.

Numerical simulation of hemodynamic parameters of turbulent and pulsatile blood flow in flexible artery with single and double stenoses

Mehdi Jahangiri,Mohsen Saghafian,Mahmood Reza Sadeghi 대한기계학회 2015 JOURNAL OF MECHANICAL SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY Vol.29 No.8

This article investigates the pulsatile and turbulent blood flows in flexible artery with single and double stenoses. The changes in pressuredrop, mean wall shear stress (WSS), radial displacement of the artery, and oscillating shear index are investigated. Similar to experimentaldata, the results of the present study show that a laminar flow occurs for stenosis of up to 70%, and for 80% stenosis the flowis turbulent. The mean WSS analysis shows that assuming the flow is laminar causes more errors than assuming the walls are solid. Thecomparison of the results for single stenosis with those for double stenosis reveals that the dilation in the arterial walls in double stenosesis much more common than in single stenosis. Therefore, the maximum mean WSS in double stenoses is less than that in single stenosis. The results also indicate that the axial pressure drop in double stenoses is higher than that in single stenosis.

The effects of viscosity, surface tension, and flow rate on gasoil-water flow pattern in microchannels

Reza Gheshlaghi,Rahman Sadeghi Boogar,Mahmood Akhavan Mahdavi 한국화학공학회 2013 Korean Journal of Chemical Engineering Vol.30 No.1

A microchannel was fabricated with glass tubes to investigate the effect of viscosity, surface tension, and flow rate on the liquid-liquid two-phase flow regime. Water and gasoil were selected as aqueous and organic working fluids, respectively. The two fluids were injected into the microchannel and created either slug or parallel profile depending on the applied conditions. The range of Reynolds and capillary numbers was chosen in such a way that neither inertia nor interfacial tension forces were negligible. Xanthan gum was used to increase viscosity and Triton X-100(TX-100) and Sodium Dodecyl Sulfate (SDS) were used to reduce the interfacial tension. The results demonstrated that higher value of viscosity and flow rate increased interfacial area, but slug flow regime remained unchanged. The two surfactants showed different effects on the flow regime and interfacial area. Addition of TX-100 did not change the slug flow but decreased the interfacial area. In contrast, addition of SDS increased interfacial area by decreasing the slug’s length in the low concentrations and by switching from slug to parallel regime at high concentrations.

Increase in the Th1-Cell-Based Immune Response in Healthy Workers Exposed to Low-Dose Radiation - Immune System Status of Radiology Staff

        Karimi, Gholamreza,Balali-Mood, Mahdi,Alamdaran, Seyed-Ali,Badie-Bostan, Hassan,Mohammadi, Elaheh,Ghorani-Azam, Adel,Sadeghi, Mahmood,Riahi-Zanjani, Bamdad KOREAN PHARMACOPUNCTURE INSTITUTE 2017 Journal of pharmacopuncture Vol.20 No.2

Objectives: Radiation is one of the most important sources of free radical (such as reactive oxygen species) production, which plays an essential role in the etiology of over hundred diseases. The aim of the study was to investigate some immune parameters and hematological indices in healthy workers of the Radiology Department, University Hospital of Mashhad, Iran. Methods: The study was performed on 50 healthy workers: 30 radiology staff as the case group and 20 laboratory workers as the control group. The radiation dose received by the radiology staff participating in the study was less than the annual maximum permissible level, 50 millisievert. Hematological parameters, lymphocyte proliferation and cytokine production were studied in both groups. Results: Among healthy radiology workers, the hematological indices did not differ statistically; however, their proliferation indices and $IFN-{\gamma}$ levels showed significant increases in parallel with decreases in the IL-4 levels as compared to controls. The immune system of workers exposed to low-dose ionizing radiation was found to be shifted from a Type 2 to a Type 1 response to promote cellular immunity. Conclusion: Based on our data, exposure to low-dose ionizing radiation may decrease the prevalence, frequency, and recurrence of various cancers and infectious diseases because of an increase in Th1-cell-based response, thus leading to more protection of the human body against tumor cells and foreign agents and possibly increased longevity. However, due to high rate of fluoroscopy use for interventional radiology, we suggest continuing research projects on radiation protection and hazards to prevent irreversible damage. As a recommendation, in future studies, radiology staff with a weakened immunity due to high radiation exposure should be considered as good choices to be treated using acupuncture techniques because acupuncture has been demonstrated to enhance the function and the number of immune cells.
