The choice of strain, substrate, and environmental conditions are fundamental factors that determine the ability of a fungus to develop and produce mushrooms with high quality. The objective of this study was to compare the strains of Lentinula edodes and Ganoderma lucidum originated from South Korea and Brazil in relation to their vegetative development in different culture media, to obtain isolates with high quality. The strains of the two mushroom species from Brazil and South Korea grew slowly, possibly because of abiotic factors or storage technique used. However, it may be concluded that temperature, humidity, light, pH, and nutrients from the substrate, if not regulated appropriately may affect the vegetative species.
Prediction of Microstructure in High-Strength Ductile Forging Parts

Governmental, environmental and economic demands call for lighter, stiffer and at the same time cheaper products in the vehicle industry. Especially safety relevant parts have to be stiff and at the same time ductile. The strategy of this project was to improve the mechanical properties of forging steel alloys by employing a high-strength and ductile bainitic microstructure in the parts while maintaining cost effective process chains to reach these goals for high stressed forged parts. Therefore, a new steel alloy combined with an optimized process chain has been developed. To optimize the process chain with a minimum of expensive experiments, a numerical approach was developed to predict the microstructure of the steel alloy after the process chain based on FEM simulations of the forging and cooling combined with deformation-time-temperature-transformation-diagrams.
Effect of polyvinyl alcohol adsorption on the mixed alumina–silica–titania suspension stability

The adsorption and electrokinetic properties as well as the stability of the AST71 suspension in the absence and presence of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) were examined. AST71 is a mixed oxide of alumina, silica and titania. All measurements were carried out as a function of solution pH and the polymer molecular weight. The pooled result analysis showed that the PVA adsorption amount strongly depends on the solution pH. The higher solution pH value is, the more polymer macromolecules are adsorbed on the solid surface. This dependence is mainly associated with the PVA chain conformation. The adsorption of polyvinyl alcohol changes the stability of the AST71 suspension, but only in the solution of pH 9. Under these conditions the system without PVA is unstable, which is connected with the isoelectric point of the solid particles. In the presence of the polymer the electrosteric stabilization occurs.

During the summer and fall of 2017 in northeastern Pennsylvania we studied the progression of adult behaviors of the spotted lanternfly, Lycorma delicatula (Hemiptera: Fulgoridae) when there was an upsurge in adult flight behavior that was not known to have occurred in 2015 or 2016, the first years following its initial detection in Pennsylvania in late 2014. Sex ratios on A. altissima trunks and branches were routinely ca. 50:50 male:female throughout the 2017 season except in two instances in two of the earliest samplings in which > 60% were males. Within the first week after adult eclosion in 2017, in conjunction with extensive feeding-related behaviors on Ailanthus altissima tree trunks, short flights occurred indiscriminately from the foliage of one tree to another or between bushes, trees and vines. One week later these flights became more prevalent and lengthier. Adults of both sexes launched themselves into the wind from non-host trees or from porches, posts and other human-made structures to engage in level or gradually descending straight-line flight trajectories that allowed them to traverse only usually 10 to 40 m of ground in one episode. After the peak of flight dispersal had occurred, the first mating pairs were observed on September 25. All of the 21 pairs of adults we observed in copula exhibited swollen, yellow abdomens in contrast to the thinner, predominantly black abdomens of the adults we had sampled during the earlier feeding and flight phases. Objectives: The aim of this study was to ascertain the 1-year incidence of stent thrombosis (ST) and major bleeding (MB) in a large, unselected population treated with sirolimus-eluting stents (SES). Background: Stent thrombosis and MB are major potential complications of drug-eluting stent implantation. Their relative incidence and predisposing factors among large populations treated worldwide are unclear. Methods: The SES were implanted in 15,147 patients who were entered in a multinational registry. We analyzed the incidence of: 1) definite and probable ST as defined by the Academic Research Consortium; and 2) MB, with the STEEPLE (Safety and efficacy of Enoxaparin in PCI) definition, together with their relation to dual antiplatelet therapy (DAPT) and to 1-year clinical outcomes. Results: The mean age of the sample was 62 +/- 11 years, 30.4% were diabetic, 10% had a Charlson comorbidity index ≥3, and 44% presented with acute coronary syndrome or myocardial infarction. At 1 year, the reported compliance with DAPT as recommended by the European Society of Cardiology guidelines was 86.3%. Adverse event rates were: ST 1.0%, MB 1.0%, mortality 1.7%, myocardial infarction 1.9%, and target lesion revascularization 2.3%. Multivariate analysis identified 9 correlates of ST and 4 correlates of MB. Advanced age and a high Charlson index were associated with an increased risk of both ST and MB. After ST, the 7-day and 1-year all-cause mortality was 30% and 35%, respectively, versus 1.5% and 10% after MB. Only 2 of 13,749 patients (0.015%) experienced both MB and ST during the entire 1-year follow-up period. Conclusions: In this worldwide population treated with ≥1 SES, the reported compliance with DAPT was good, and the incidence of ST and MB was low. Tubular inorganic nanostructures are high aspect ratio nanomaterials possessing few nanometer wide inner channels. We reporton our studies about engineering the chemical composition, morphology and pore size of carbon, silica and titania nanotubes as wellas of mesoporous silicate MCM-41. The former three systems represent three dierent classes of inorganic nanotubes, since theyexhibit superior catalyst support properties as well.

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>The unique magnetic properties of superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPIONs) have led to their increasing use in drug delivery and imaging applications. Some polymer-coated SPIONs, however, share with many other nanoparticles the potential of causing hypersensitivity reactions (HSRs) known as complement (C) activation-related pseudoallergy (CARPA). In order to explore the roles of iron core composition and particle surface coating in SPION-induced CARPA, we measured C activation by 6 different SPIONs in a human serum that is known to react to nanoparticles (NPs) with strong C activation. Remarkably, only the carboxymethyldextran-coated (ferucarbotran, Resosvist®) and dextran-coated (ferumoxtran-10, Sinerem®) SPIONs caused significant C activation, while the citric acid, phosphatidylcholine, starch and chitosan-coated SPIONs had no such effect. Focusing on Resovist and Sinerem, we found Sinerem to be a stronger activator of C than Resovist, although the individual variation in 15 different human sera was substantial. Further analysis of C activation by Sinerem indicated biphasic dose dependence and significant production of C split product Bb but not C4d, attesting to alternative pathway C activation only at low doses. Consistent with the strong C activation by Sinerem and previous reports of HSRs in man, injection of Sinerem in a pig led to dose-dependent CARPA, while Resovist was reaction-free. Using nanoparticle tracking analysis, it was further determined that Sinerem, more than Resovist, displayed multimodal size distribution and significant fraction of aggregates – factors which are known to promote C activation and CARPA. Taken together, our findings offer physicochemical insight into how key compositional factors and nanoparticle size distribution affect SPION-induced CARPA, a knowledge that could lead to the development of SPIONs with improved safety profiles.</P> <P><B>Graphical abstract</B></P> <P>[DISPLAY OMISSION]</P>
