An efficient hybrid TLBO-PSO-ANN for fast damage identification in steel beam structures using IGA

        S. Khatir,T. Khatir,D. Boutchicha,C. Le Thanh,H. Tran-Ngoc,T.Q. Bui,R. Capozucca,M. Abdel Wahab 국제구조공학회 2020 Smart Structures and Systems, An International Jou Vol.25 No.5

The existence of damages in structures causes changes in the physical properties by reducing the modal parameters. In this paper, we develop a two-stages approach based on normalized Modal Strain Energy Damage Indicator (<i>nMSEDI</i>) for quick applications to predict the location of damage. A two-dimensional IsoGeometric Analysis (2D-IGA), Machine Learning Algorithm (MLA) and optimization techniques are combined to create a new tool. In the first stage, we introduce a modified damage identification technique based on frequencies using <i>nMSEDI</i> to locate the potential of damaged elements. In the second stage, after eliminating the healthy elements, the damage index values from <i>nMSEDI</i> are considered as input in the damage quantification algorithm. The hybrid of Teaching-Learning-Based Optimization (TLBO) with Artificial Neural Network (ANN) and Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) are used along with nMSEDI. The objective of TLBO is to estimate the parameters of PSO-ANN to find a good training based on actual damage and estimated damage. The IGA model is updated using experimental results based on stiffness and mass matrix using the difference between calculated and measured frequencies as objective function. The feasibility and efficiency of nMSEDI-PSO-ANN after finding the best parameters by TLBO are demonstrated through the comparison with nMSEDI-IGA for different scenarios. The result of the analyses indicates that the proposed approach can be used to determine correctly the severity of damage in beam structures.

Characterization and UV Protection of Cotton and Cotton/Polyester Blend Fabrics Coated With PVA/PLST/ZnO NPs Nanocomposites Under the Effect of Gamma Irradiation

        Nisreen M. Ali,Saleh N. Saleh,Magdy Ahmed,Mahmoud S. Hassan,Abdel Wahab M. El‑Naggar 한국섬유공학회 2023 Fibers and polymers Vol.24 No.11

The main objective of this work is to impart UV protection properties to cotton and cotton/polyester fabrics and enhance the original chemical and physical properties. In this procedure, the fabrics were coated with nanocomposites based on poly(vinyl alcohol)/plasticized starch (PVA/PLST (80/20%)/Zn NPs. The coated fabrics were then exposed to gamma radiation to induce cross-linked layer structure covering the fibers of the fabrics. The formation of Zn NPs was confirmed by UV/Vis and XRD analysis. In addition, the coated fabrics were characterized by the measurements of water absorption, crease recovery, thermal stability, surface morphology and tensile mechanical measurements. The UV protection of the coated fabrics was determined. The results indicated that the coated fabrics showed highly reducing UV-A, UV-B and ultraviolet protection factor (UPF), particularly with increasing irradiation dose, regardless of fabric kind. It was found that cotton and cotton/PET fabrics treated with PVA/PLST/Zn NPs nanocomposites irradiated to a dose of 30 kGy displayed UPF excellent rating values of 44.31 and 58.23, respectively.

Influence of balancing of internal combustion engines on the operating conditions of hydrodynamic bearings

        T. Khatir,M. Bouchetara,M. Djafri,S. Khatir,M. Abdel Wahab 대한기계학회 2017 JOURNAL OF MECHANICAL SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY Vol.31 No.10

We studied the influence of balancing internal combustion engines on the performance of hydrodynamic plain bearings. A non-linear approach makes it possible to calculate the forces of pressure generated by the lubricant film. This approach is coupled with a dynamic calculation, which determines the inertia forces of the rod. The counterweight to balance the engine is applied to the heads of rods and not to the crankshaft. We chose three models of connecting rod (rod of an engine in series, rod with partial and rod with complete counterweight). To determine the lubricant pressure field in the bearing, the modified Reynolds equation was solved using the finite difference method, taking into account the boundary conditions of Reynolds. Since the bearing is subjected to a variable load, the mobility method was used to facilitate the resolution of the Reynolds equation. The proposed numerical simulation allowed us to analyze the influence of counterweight applied to the connecting rod head on the variation of the lubricant pressure field, the minimum film thickness, the axial flow and the friction torque in the big end bearing during the operating cycle.

      • Serum Talin-1 is a Potential Novel Biomarker for Diagnosis of Hepatocellular Carcinoma in Egyptian Patients

Youns, Mahmoud M.,Abdel Wahab, Abdel Hady A.,Hassan, Zeinab A.,Attia, Mohamed S. Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2013 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.14 No.6

Background: Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a major cause of cancer mortality worldwide. The outcome of HCC depends mainly on its early diagnosis. To date, the performance of traditional biomarkers is unsatisfactory. Talins were firstly identified as cytoplasmic protein partners of integrins but Talin-1 appears to play a crucial role in cancer formation and progression. Our study was conducted to assess the diagnostic value of serum Talin-1 (TLN1) compared to the most feasible traditional biomarker alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) for the diagnosis of HCC. Methods: TLN1 was detected using enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) in serum samples from 120 Egyptian subjects including 40 with HCC, 40 with liver cirrhosis (LC) and 40 healthy controls (HC). Results: ROC curve analysis was used to create a predictive model for TLN1 relative to AFP in HCC diagnosis. Serum levels of TLN1 in hepatocellular carcinoma patients were significantly higher compared to the other groups (p<0.0001). The diagnostic accuracy of TLN1 was higher than that of AFP regarding sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value and negative predictive value in diagnosis of HCC. Conclusions: The present study showed for the first time that Talin-1 (TLN1) is a potential diagnostic marker for HCC, with a higher sensitivity and specificity compared to the traditional biomarker AFP.

Mechanical characterization of an epoxy panel reinforced by date palm petiole particle

        A. Bendada,D. Boutchicha,S. Khatir,E. Magagnini,R. Capozucca,M. Abdel Wahab 국제구조공학회 2020 Steel and Composite Structures, An International J Vol.35 No.5

The past years were marked by an increase in the use of wood waste in civil and mechanical constructions. Date palm waste remains also one of the most solicited renewable and recyclable natural resources in the composition of composite materials. In Algeria, a great amount of this type of plant wastes accumulates every year. In order to make use of this waste, a new wood-epoxy composite material based on date palm petiole particleboard is developed. It makes use of date palm petiole particleboard as reinforcement and epoxy resin as matrix. The size of the particles reinforcement are between 1~3 mm and proportion of reinforcement used is 37%. In this work, experimental and numerical studies are conducted in order to characterize the wood fibre-epoxy plates. Firstly, experimental modal analysis test was carried out to determine Young’s modulus of the elaborated material. Then, in order to validate the results, compression test was conducted. Furthermore, additional information about the shear modulus of this material is obtained by performing an experimental modal analysis to extract the first torsional mode. Moreover, a finite element model is developed using ANSYS software to simulate the vibration behaviour of the plates. The results show a good agreement with the experimental modal analysis, which confirms the values of Young’s modulus and shear modulus.

A Modified Multiple Depth First Search Algorithm for Grid Mapping Using Mini-Robots Khepera

        Sally El-Ghoul,Ashraf S. Hussein,M. S. Abdel Wahab,U. Witkowski,U. Ruckert 한국정보과학회 2008 Journal of Computing Science and Engineering Vol.2 No.4

This paper presents a Modified Multiple Depth First Search algorithm for the exploration of the indoor environments occupied with obstacles in random distribution. The proposed algorithm was designed and implemented to employ one or a team of Khepera II mini robots for the exploration process. In case of multi-robots, the BlueCore2 External Bluetooth module was used to establish wireless networks with one master robot and one up to three slaves. Messages are sent and received via the module’s Universal Asynchronous Receiver/Transmitter (UART) interface. Real exploration experiments were performed using locally developed teleworkbench with various autonomy features. In addition, computer simulation tool was also developed to simulate the exploration experiments with one master robot and one up to ten slaves. Computer simulations were in good agreement with the real experiments for the considered cases of one to one up to three networks. Results of the MMDFS for single robot exhibited 46% reduction in the needed number of steps for exploring environments with obstacles in comparison with other algorithms, namely the Ants algorithm and the original MDFS algorithm. This reduction reaches 71% whenever exploring open areas. Finally, results performed using multi-robots exhibited more reduction in the needed number of exploration steps.

An efficient approach for model updating of a large-scale cable-stayed bridge using ambient vibration measurements combined with a hybrid metaheuristic search algorithm

        Tran N. Hoa,S. Khatir,G. De Roeck,Nguyen N. Long,Bui T. Thanh,M. Abdel Wahab 국제구조공학회 2020 Smart Structures and Systems, An International Jou Vol.25 No.4

This paper proposes a novel approach to model updating for a large-scale cable-stayed bridge based on ambient vibration tests coupled with a hybrid metaheuristic search algorithm. Vibration measurements are carried out under excitation sources of passing vehicles and wind. Based on the measured structural dynamic characteristics, a finite element (FE) model is updated. For long-span bridges, ambient vibration test (AVT) is the most effective vibration testing technique because ambient excitation is freely available, whereas a forced vibration test (FVT) requires considerable efforts to install actuators such as shakers to produce measurable responses. Particle swarm optimization (PSO) is a famous metaheuristic algorithm applied successfully in numerous fields over the last decades. However, PSO has big drawbacks that may decrease its efficiency in tackling the optimization problems. A possible drawback of PSO is premature convergence leading to low convergence level, particularly in complicated multi-peak search issues. On the other hand, PSO not only depends crucially on the quality of initial populations, but also it is impossible to improve the quality of new generations. If the positions of initial particles are far from the global best, it may be difficult to seek the best solution. To overcome the drawbacks of PSO, we propose a hybrid algorithm combining GA with an improved PSO (HGAIPSO). Two striking characteristics of HGAIPSO are briefly described as follows: (1) because of possessing crossover and mutation operators, GA is applied to generate the initial elite populations and (2) those populations are then employed to seek the best solution based on the global search capacity of IPSO that can tackle the problem of premature convergence of PSO. The results show that HGAIPSO not only identifies uncertain parameters of the considered bridge accurately, but also outperforms than PSO, improved PSO (IPSO), and a combination of GA and PSO (HGAPSO) in terms of convergence level and accuracy.
