        Rotary Compressor Performance at Low Ambient Temperatures

        Small rotary compressors are used in domestic heat pump appliances, for example, in domestic dehumidifiers and heat pump clothes dryers. Compressor performance curves provided by the manufacturer can be based on testing at relatively high ambient temperatures, in some cases as high as 35°C. This can be much higher compared with the ambient temperature in which the compressor operates when, for example, it is installed in a domestic dehumidifier which can operate in ambient temperatures as low as 10°C. We have developed a compressor calorimeter to test a small R134a rotary compressor extracted from a commercial domestic dehumidifier and use this to measure compressor performance parameters including the isentropic and volumetric efficiencies and the compressor heat loss fraction. The performance testing has been carried out at ambient temperatures 10°C, 15°C, 20°C and 25°C for a fixed relative humidity of 70% to compare how the compressor performance varies with the ambient temperature, and to determine how well the compressor performs outside of the performance envelope provided by the manufacturer. The results show that isentropic and volumetric efficiency of these small compressors is relatively insensitive to variation in ambient temperature, even outside of the performance envelope provided by the manufacturer. However, the compressor heat loss fraction can, on average, double from 15% to 30%, between operation at ambient 25°C and ambient 10°C. The data obtained in this work is used to construct compressor sub-models for certain ambient temperatures. We show how these sub-models can be used to improve a domestic dehumidifier model for operation at low ambient conditions within the evaporator frosting regime and good agreement is obtained between experimental and simulated data. The authors are not aware of a domestic dehumidifier model designed to work at ambient temperatures within the frosting regime.

        A case study of wedding planning is used to explore the concept of consumer ambivalence. Focus groups, in-depth interviews, and shopping trips were employed to generate text. A formal definition of consumer ambivalence is provided. Our analysis revealed four antecedents of consumer of ambivalence : expectation versus reality, overload, role and conflict with purchase influencers, and custom and value conflict. These antecedents were then linked to particular coping strategies that informants employed to manage the ambivalence that was generated. Suggestions of how future research might explore consumer ambivalence are offered.

        멀티플랫폼 뉴스 이용과 시민의식 유형이수용자의 기자 역할 및 권위 인식에 미치는 영향

        본 연구는 멀티 플랫폼 미디어 환경에서 기자의 역할이 어떻게 변해야 하는지에 대한 논의를기자가 아닌 뉴스 이용자의 시각에서 살펴봄으로써 저널리즘의 미래에 대한 단초를 제공하고자했다. 이를 위해 우선, 뉴스 이용자의 다양한 뉴스 플랫폼 이용 빈도와 두 가지 유형의 시민의식이 기자 역할 인식과 어떻게 관련되어 있는지 조사했다. 또한 다양한 기자 역할 인식이 각각기자 전문성 인식과 기자의 사회적 역할 인식에 미치는 영향도 함께 조사했다. 연구 결과 온라인 뉴스 이용, 조망적 시민의식 (monitorial citizenship), 그리고 기자 역할 인식간에 긍정적인 상관관계가 있었다. 특히, 새로운 기자 역할로 대두된 “안내자로서의 기자 (journalist asguide)” 인식은 기자 전문성 인식과 기자의 사회적 역할 인식과 강한 연관이 있었다. 이러한연구결과를 바탕으로 위기에 처한 저널리즘 업계가 향후 어떠한 노력을 해야 하는지에 대한 현실적 함의를 토론했다. This study`s findings offer clues about journalism`s possible future in South Koreaby exploring what news users - rather than journalists themselves - think aboutjournalists` role in a rapidly changing news media environment. The study firstexamines how the public`s use of different news media platforms and their differenttypes of citizenship relate to perceptions of journalists` roles. The influence ofperceived journalists` roles on the perceptions of journalists` expertise and statuswas then explored, as this sheds light on shifting degrees of journalism authority. Findings showed positive correlations between online news media use, “monitorialcitizenship” and perceptions of journalists` roles in South Korea. The study alsofound that a new role - journalist as guide - has strong associations with perceivedjournalists` expertise and status.

      • A noncanonical E-box enhancer drives mouse Period2 circadian oscillations in vivo

        <P>The mouse Period2 (mPer2) locus is an essential negative-feedback element of the mammalian circadian-clock mechanism. Recent work has shown that mPer2 circadian gene expression persists in both central and peripheral tissues. Here, we analyze the mouse mPer2 promoter and identify a circadian enhancer (E2) with a noncanonical 5'-CACGTT-3' E-box located 20 bp upstream of the mPer2 transcription start site. The E2 enhancer accounts for most circadian transcriptional drive of the mPer2 locus by CLOCK:BMAL1, is a major site of DNaseI hypersensitivity in this region, and is constitutively bound by a transcriptional complex containing the CLOCK protein. Importantly, the E2 enhancer is sufficient to drive self-sustained circadian rhythms of luciferase activity in central and peripheral tissues from mPer2-E2::Luciferase transgenic mice with tissue-specific phase and period characteristics. Last, genetic analysis with mutations in Clock and Bmal1 shows that the E2 enhancer is a target of CLOCK and BMAL1 in vivo.</P>
