        Strong turbulence occurred in Korean Peninsula after "Cheonan Warship Event". President Announcement by UNSC seemed to have ceased the event, but actually caused more political and military struggles among some Northeast Asian countries. ROK, the USA and Japan strengthened the control over DPRK, and the USA, by means of a series of joint military maneuvers, tried to establish Asian-Pacific Military Alliance to control China and edge the Sino-USA relationship to military conflict. At the same time, there has been more frequent interaction between Sino-DPRK leaders and economic cooperation and strategic communication after "Cheonan Warship Event". How to strengthen the relationship among ROK, the USA and Japan and how to develop Sino-DPRK relations will affect the geo-politics of Northeast Asia. `천안함` 사건이 발생한 후 조선반도 정세에는 큰 파장이 일어났다. 비록 유엔안보리에서 "의장성명"을 발표하여 표면상에서 이 사건이 한단락 매듭지어진 듯 했으나 동북아 주요 국가 간에 이 사건을 에워싼 정치, 군사 논쟁은 날로 격렬해졌다. 한미일은 북한에 대한 제재를 강화하였을 뿐만 아니라 미국은 일련의 연합군사연습을 통해 `아시아-태평양군사연맹`을 결성하여 중국을 견제하고 나아가 중미 양국 관계를 "군사대항"의 변두리에 밀어부치려 시도하였다. 더불어 `천안함`사건 후 북중 양국 고위층의 움직임이 빈번해지고 경제무역 합작과 전략 접촉이 더욱 밀접해졌다. 한미일 3각동맹관계가 어떻게 강화되고 북중 양국 관계가 어떻게 발전하겠는가는 동북아 지정학관계에 중요한 영향을 미치게 될 것이다.

      • Superior Hybrid Cathode Material Containing Lithium-Excess Layered Material and Graphene for Lithium-Ion Batteries

        <P>Graphene-wrapped lithium-excess layered hybrid materials (Li<SUB>2</SUB>MnO<SUB>3</SUB>·LiMO<SUB>2</SUB>, M = Mn, Ni, Co, hereafter abbreviated as LMNCO) have been synthesized and investigated as cathode materials for lithium-ion batteries. Cyclic voltammetry measurement shows a significant reduction of the reaction overpotential in benefit of the graphene conducting framework. The electrochemical impedance spectroscopy results reveal that the graphene can greatly reduce the cell resistance, especially the charge transfer resistance. Our investigation demonstrates that the graphene conducting framework can efficiently alleviate the polarization of pristine LMNCO material leading to an outstanding enhancement in cell performance and cycling stability.         Synthesis of Sulfonated Fluorenyl-Containing Poly(ether ether ketone ketone)s and Their Blends with an Amino-Functionalized Poly(ether ether ketone) for Fuel Cell Applications

        A new family of sulfonated fluorenyl-containing poly(ether ether ketone ketone)s (SFPEEKKs) were successfully synthesized through a mild postsulfonation in concentrated sulfuric acid at room temperature. Further, a series of “molecule-enhanced” blend membranes were prepared based on SFPEEKKs and an amino-functionalized poly(ether ether ketone) by the solution casting method. These blend membranes generally showed higher thermal stability, lower swelling ratio and methanol permeability and superior mechanical properties in comparison with pristine SFPEEKK membranes. The results showed that some blend membranes may be promising proton exchange membranes for fuel cell applications.

      • Human Liver Specific Transcriptional Factor TCP10L Binds to MAD4

        A human gene T-complex protein 10 like (TCP10L) was cloned in our lab. A previous study showed that it expressed specifically in the liver and testis. A transcription experiment revealed that TCP10L was a transcription factor with transcription inhibition activity. In this study, the human MAD4 was identified to interact with TCP10L by a yeast two-hybrid screen. This finding was confirmed by immunoprecipitation and subcellular localization experiments. As MAD4 is a member of the MAD family, which antagonizes the functions of MYC and promotes cell differentiation, the biological function of the interaction between TCP10L and MAD4 may be to maintain the differentiation state in liver cells. Also, we propose that the up-regulation of Myc is caused by the down-regulation of TCP10L in human hepatocarcinomas.

        Augmenter of Liver Regeneration Alleviates Renal Hypoxia-Reoxygenation Injury by Regulating Mitochondrial Dynamics in Renal Tubular Epithelial Cells

        Mitochondria are highly dynamic organelles that constantly undergo fission and fusion processes that closely related to their function. Disruption of mitochondrial dynamics has been demonstrated in acute kidney injury (AKI), which could eventually result in cell injury and death. Previously, we reported that augmenter of liver regeneration (ALR) alleviates renal tubular epithelial cell injury. Here, we gained further insights into whether the renoprotective roles of ALR are associated with mitochondrial dynamics. Changes in mitochondrial dynamics were examined in experimental models of renal ischemia-reperfusion (IR). In a model of hypoxia-reoxygenation (HR) injury in vitro, dynamin-related protein 1 (Drp1) and mitochondrial fission process protein 1 (MTFP1), two key proteins of mitochondrial fission, were downregulated in the Lv-ALR + HR group. ALR overexpression additionally had an impact on phosphorylation of Drp1 Ser637 during AKI. The inner membrane fusion protein, Optic Atrophy 1 (OPA1), was significantly increased whereas levels of outer membrane fusion proteins Mitofusin-1 and -2 (Mfn1, Mfn2) were not affected in the Lv-ALR + HR group, compared with the control group. Furthermore, the mTOR/4E-BP1 signaling pathway was highly activated in the Lv-ALR + HR group. ALR overexpression led to suppression of HR-induced apoptosis. Our collective findings indicate that ALR gene transfection alleviates mitochondrial injury, possibly through inhibiting fission and promoting fusion of the mitochondrial inner membrane, both of which contribute to reduction of HK-2 cell apoptosis. Additionally, fission processes are potentially mediated by promoting tubular cell survival through activating the mTOR/4E-BP1 signaling pathway.

      • Meta-Analysis of Circulating Endothelial Cells and Circulating Endothelial Progenitor Cells as Prognostic Factors in Lung Cancer

        Background: The aim of this study was to analyze the prognostic implications of pretreatment circulating endothelial cells (CECs) and circulating endothelial progenitor cells (CEPCs) for the survival of patients with lung cancer. Materials and Methods: Relevant literature was identified using Medline and EMBASE. Patient clinical characteristics, overall survival (OS) and progression-free survival (PFS) together with CEC and CEPC positive rates before treatment were extracted. STATA 12.0 was used for our analysis and assessment of publication bias. Results: A total of 13 articles (8 for CEC and 5 for CEPC, n=595 and n=244) were pooled for the global meta-analysis. The odds ratio (OR) for OS predicted by pretreatment CECs was 1.641 [0.967, 2.786], while the OR for PFS was 1.168 [0.649, 2.100]. The OR for OS predicted by pretreatment CEPCs was 12.673 [5.274, 30.450], while the OR for PFS was 4.930 [0.931, 26.096]. Subgroup analyses were conducted according to clinical staging. Odds ratio (OR) showed the high level of pretreatment CECs only correlated with the OS of patients with advanced lung cancer (stage III-IV). Conclusions: High counts of CECs seem to be associated only with worse 1-year OS in patients with lung cancer, while high level of pretreatment CEPCs correlate with both worse PFS and OS.

        Tentative identification of 20(S)-protopanaxadiol metabolites in human plasma and urine using ultra-performance liquid chromatography coupled with triple quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry

        Background: 20(S)-Protopanaxadiol (PPD), the aglycone part of 20(S)-protopanaxadiol ginsenosides, possesses antidepressant activity among many other pharmacological activities. It is currently undergoing clinical trial in China as an antidepressant. Methods: In this study, an ultra-performance liquid chromatography coupled with triple quadrupole time-of-flight mass tandem mass spectrometry method was established to identify the metabolites of PPD in human plasma and urine following oral administration in phase IIa clinical trial. Results: A total of 40 metabolites in human plasma and urine were identified using this method. Four metabolites identified were isolated from rat feces, and two of them were analyzed by NMR to elucidate the exact structures. The structures of isolated compounds were confirmed as (20S,24S)-epoxydammarane-12,23,25-triol-3-one and (20S,24S)-epoxydammarane-3,12,23,25-tetrol. Both compounds were found as metabolites in human for the first time. Upon comparing our findings with the findings of the in vitro study of PPD metabolism in human liver microsomes and human hepatocytes, metabolites with m/z 475.3783 and phase II metabolites were not found in our study whereas metabolites with m/z 505.3530, 523.3641, and 525.3788 were exclusively detected in our experiments. Conclusion: The metabolites identified using ultra-performance liquid chromatography coupled with triple quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry in our study were mostly hydroxylated metabolites. This indicated that PPD was metabolized in human body mainly through phase I hepatic metabolism. The main metabolites are in 20,24-oxide form with multiple hydroxylation sites. Finally, the metabolic pathways of PPD in vivo (human) were proposed based on structural analysis.

        The impact of R&D intensity on firm performance in an emerging market: Evidence from China’s electronics manufacturing firms

        The impact pattern of R&D intensity on firm performance is an interesting but not explicitlyuntangled topic in the emerging market. This study explores the topic in the context ofChina using a unique unbalanced panel data set for the China’s electronics manufacturingfirms. In order to strengthen the robustness of the statistical results, this study employs twocoherent models: pooled-OLS regression and pooled-quantile regression techniques. Thepooled-OLS regressions focusing on mean effects present the robust evidence of a positiverelationship between R&D intensity on firm performance, and the further pooled-quantileregressions portraying the relative importance of explanatory variables at different points ofthe performance distribution show that the R&D intensity exhibits a stronger impact on thebetter-performance firms. Our study presents some new evidence for the impact of R&Dintensity on firm performance in the emerging market.
