        Effects of sweetener sucralose on diet preference, growth performance and hematological and biochemical parameters of weaned piglets

        Objective: Two experiments were conducted to investigate the effects of dietary sucralose on diet preference and growth performance of weaned piglets, and a third experiment was a 28-d safety study to examine if high-dose sucralose could affect the health state of weaned piglets. Methods: In experiment one, 48 piglets had free access to a corn-soybean based diet and the same diet supplemented with 150 mg/kg sucralose for 15 d. In experiment two, 180 piglets were blocked into 5 treatments with 6 replications. They were fed basal diets supplemented with 0, 75, 150, 225, and 300 mg/kg sucralose for 28 days. In experiment three, 108 piglets were randomly assigned to 3 treatments and fed diets supplemented with 0, 150 (suitable level), and 1,500 (ten-fold suitable level) mg/kg sucralose for 28 d. Results: The experiment 1 showed that piglets preferred (p<0.05) diets containing sucralose during experimental period. In experiment 2, piglets fed a diet supplemented with 150 mg/kg sucralose had a higher average daily gain (ADG) and average daily feed intake (ADFI) than pigs in the control group and other treatment groups during the experiment period. The concentrations of sucralose over 150 mg/kg may decrease feed intake. However, no difference in feed conversion ratio was observed. In experiment 3, piglets fed diet supplemented with 150 mg/kg sucralose had a higher ADG and ADFI than that of pigs in the control group and 1,500 mg/kg treatment groups during the experiment period. Clinical blood metabolites, organ index and histological morphology were not significantly different between sucralose treatments. Conclusion: Sucralose can promote feed intake and thereby improve growth performance of weaned piglets. Moreover, inclusion of 1,500 mg/kg sucralose was demonstrated to have no observed adverse effects. Supplementing 150 mg/kg sucralose for weaned piglets is recommended in this study.

        Formosanin C attenuates lipopolysaccharide-induced inflammation through nuclear factor-κB inhibition in macrophages

        Extended inflammation and cytokine production pathogenically contribute to a number of inflammatory disorders. Formosanin C (FC) is the major diosgenin saponin found in herb Paris formosana Hayata (Liliaceae), which has been shown to exert anti-cancer and immunomodulatory functions. In this study, we aimed to investigate anti-inflammatory activity of FC and the underlying molecular mechanism. RAW264.7 macrophages were stimulated with lipopolysaccharide (LPS) or pretreated with FC prior to being stimulated with LPS. Thereafter, the macrophages were subjected to analysis of the expression levels of pro-inflammatory mediators, including nitric oxide (NO), prostaglandin E2 (PGE), tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), interleukin-1β (IL-1β), and IL-6, as well as two relevant enzymes, inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS), and cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2). The analysis revealed that FC administration blunted LPS-induced production of NO and PGE in a dose-dependent manner, while the expression of iNOS and COX-2 at both mRNA and protein levels was inhibited in LPS-stimulated macrophages pre-treated with FC. Moreover, LPS stimulation upregulated mRNA expression and medium release of TNF-α, IL-1β, and IL- 6, whereas this effect was blocked upon FC pre-administration. Mechanistic studies showed that inhibitory effects of FC on LPS-induced inflammation were associated with a downregulation of IκB kinase, IκB, and p65/NF-κB pathway. Taken together, these data suggest that FC possesses an inflammation-suppressing activity, thus being a potential agent for the treatment of inflammation-associated disorders.

        A novel cocatalyst of NiCoP significantly enhances visible-light photocatalytic hydrogen evolution over cadmium sulfide

        The technology of photocatalytic hydrogen evolution (PHE) by water splitting is a clean and sustainable approach to solve energy crisis and environmental problem. Many efforts have been made to develop new materials for this technology. In the photocatalytic water splitting, the cocatalyst is pivotal in improving the photocatalytic ability of the main catalyst by transferring electrons and providing active sites of H+ reduction. Here we report a new bimetal phosophide cocatalyst of NiCoP. The NiCoP can significantly improve the ability and durability of PHE for water splitting. The PHE rate is maximized to 28412.6 μmol/g/h over a 8 wt.% NiCoP/CdS photocatalyst, which is 361 times of the 1 wt.‰ Pt/CdS (78.7 μmol/g/h) under the same water splitting condition. The apparent quantum yield in 100 h is about 36.8%. The long-time photolysis water reaction for 100 h with increasing photocatalytic activity exhibits that the NiCoP in CdS is highly stable in water spitting. We can control and improve the photocatalytic activity by regulating the Ni–Co ratio, which is an advantage relative to single-metal phosphides. The photo-induced charge transfer over NiCoP has been proved by photoluminescence and methyl viologen dication. It is indicated the non-noble-metal cocatalyst NiCoP can substitute noble metal to significantly enhance the PHE activity of photocatalysts.

        Effects of zinc sources and levels of zinc amino acid complex on growth performance, hematological and biochemical parameters in weanling pigs

        Objective: The objective of the study was to investigate the effects of zinc amino acid complex (ZnAA) on growth performance, hematological and biochemical parameters in weanling pigs. Methods: In Exp. 1, a total of 216 Duroc${\times}$Landrace${\times}$Large White weanling pigs were assigned randomly to 6 dietary treatments. Each treatment had 6 replicates (pens) with 6 pigs each. The diets were corn-soybean meal based with supplementation of 0, 20, 40, 80, 120 mg Zn/kg from ZnAA or 40 mg Zn/kg from feed-grade zinc sulfate. The experiment lasted 42 days. In Exp. 2, a total of 180 weanling pigs were assigned randomly to 3 dietary treatments supplemented with 0, 80, or 800 mg Zn/kg from ZnAA. Results: In Exp. 1, pigs fed 40 to 80 mg Zn/kg from ZnAA had higher (p<0.05) average daily gain (ADG) than the unsupplemented group during d 0 to 14. During d 0 to 42, the pigs fed 20 to 120 mg Zn/kg from ZnAA had increased (p<0.05) ADG. Pigs fed 20 to 120 mg/kg Zn from ZnAA had lower feed:gain (p<0.05), increased the activity of serum Cu-Zn superoxide dismutase on d 14, and increased serum Zn levels on d 42 (p<0.05). In Exp. 2, pigs fed diets with 800 mg Zn/kg had increased average daily feed intake during d 15 to 28 (p<0.05) compared to the unsupplemented group. During d 0 to 28, the pigs fed supplemental Zn had increased ADG (p<0.05). On d 14 and d 28, pigs fed supplemental Zn had higher the serum alkaline phosphatase activities (p<0.05). No significant differences were observed in the hematological parameters and organ indices. Conclusion: Supplementation with 20 to 80 mg/kg Zn from ZnAA improved the growth performance in weaned pigs. The piglets can tolerate up to 800 mg/kg Zn from ZnAA with limited potential health effects.

        Mechanical properties and microstructure of mullite modified zirconia ceramic for dental applications

        Objectives: The aim of this study tried to find an appropriate addition of mullite to modify zirconia in order to improve the shortcomings of zirconia for clinical applications. Methods: 10%, 20%, 30%, 40%, 50% (on weight basis) mullite modified zirconia (MDZ) were fabricated.The hardness,fracture toughness and elastic modulus were tested on specimens prepared through respective methods. Results: The flexural strength, hardness and elastic modulus of these five groups decreased with an increase in the percentage of mullite, which may be ascribed to the increasing presence of a glassy phase. The fracture toughness of the 30% mullite content showed a similar result with the 10% group. Conclusions: In general, an increase in the content of mullite is accompanied with a decrease of the strength and fracture toughness. The MDZ with a 10% content of mullite presents better mechanical properties and a better comprehensive clinical performance may be expected from.

        Sensitivity analysis of key factors in controlling absorption and desorption of oxygen to oxygen carriers

        Chemical looping air separation gives an oxygen resource for the oxy-fuel combustion system. To investigate the sensitivity of operation parameters and optimal operation parameters, with the consideration of the reactor temperature, we used the oxygen concentration, and reaction gas flow, an orthogonal experiment and multi-objective comprehensive evaluation method to analyze the results obtained by fixed-bed apparatus with the YBaCo4O7+, Y0.95Ti0.05BaCo4O7+, Y0.5Dy0.5BaCo4O7+, and Y0.2Ti0.05Dy0.75BaCo4O7+ oxygen carriers. The results showed that the effects of operating conditions on oxygen absorption/desorption properties varieds in the order: oxygen concentration>gas flow rate>absorption temperature=desorption temperature. Analysis of max-min difference showed that the optimum operating conditions such as absorption temperature, 350 oC, desorption temperature, 430 oC, gas flow rate, 200 ml/min, and oxygen concentration, 21% were confirmed

        The polymorphisms of bovine PCSK1 gene and their associations with growth traits

        Proprotein convertase 1 (PCSK1) is an endopeptidase involved in proteolytic processing of peptide hormone precursors in granules of the regulated secretory pathway of endocrine cells and mutations in PCSK1 gene are thought to cause obesity. In the present study, based on PCR-SSCP and DNA sequencing methods, polymorphisms of the PCSK1 gene were detected in 858 individuals from five breeds (Nanyang cattle, Qinchuan cattle, Jiaxian cattle, Luxi cattle and Chinese Holstein). The results showed that only P_8 locus showed polymorphisms and 3 synonymous SNPs of PCSK1 gene were identified. Additionally, significant statistical difference was found in bovine birth weight and diplotype MM were 7.35% higher than diplotype XY.

        Effects of Huzhangoside C on Dextran Sodium Sulfate-Stimulated Colitis in Mice

        Chronic inflammation is a major risk factor for cancer. Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a chronicinflammatory disease of the gastrointestinal tract, ultimately leading to a breakdown of intestinal barrier function. Clematisflorida var. plena is a folk prescription used to treat inflammation and rheumatism in She pharmacy. The bioactivity of C. florida var. plena is primarily due to triterpene saponins. Huzhangoside C (HZ) is an active component of C. florida var. plena. In this study, the anti-inflammatory effect of HZ on a mouse colitis model induced by dextran sulfate sodium (DSS) wasinvestigated. Result indicated a notable reduction in body weight loss and colon length shortening in HZ-mediated micecompared to DSS-stimulated control mice. Furthermore, inflammatory signaling mechanisms involving interleukin-6 andtumor necrosis factor-a were suppressed in HZ-treated mice. HZ treatment significantly suppressed the expression of nuclearfactor kappa B (NF-jB), STAT3, and iNOS in colon tissue. After HZ treatment, malondialdehyde and nitric oxide levels weresignificantly decreased, while Nrf-2, superoxide dismutase, and glutathione expression levels were notably improved. Theresult indicated that HZ could activate the Nrf-2 signal cascade, inhibit the expression of NF-jB, eNOS, and STAT3, andenhance the intestinal barrier function of DSS stimulated ulcerative colitis intestinal injury. The results suggest that HZ ispotential anti-inflammatory agent for treating IBD.

        In this paper, we introduce and discuss the notion of DC- projective modules over commutative rings, where C is a semidualizing module. This extends Gillespie and Ding, Mao’s notion of Ding projective modules. The properties of DC-projective dimensions are also given.
