Purpose: This retrospective study evaluated the changes in hyoid bone and tongue positions as well as oral cavity volume after mandibular setback by BSSRO. Materials and Methods: 18 Koreans who underwent BSSRO to correct mandibular prognathism were studied. Lateral cephalograms were taken and traced preoperatively (T0), immediately (T1) and approximately 6 months postoperatively (T2). Submentovertex radiograghs were taken and traced before surgery (T0) and about 6 months after surgery (T2). The area and volume of oral cavity, the vertical and horizontal dimensions of the hyoid bone and tongue dorsum were measured. Results: Mandibular setback surgery resulted in a significant reduction of lower oral cavity volume. The hyoid bone displaced posteroinferiorly immediately after surgery, and it tended to return to its original vertical position at 6 month after mandibular setback by BSSRO. The retropalatal space around tongue was maintained and the retrolingual space around tongue was reduced immediately postoperatively. The readaptation of tongue was not evident for that the follow up period was not long enough. No significant statistical correlations between the amounts of mandibular setback and the changes of oral cavity volume were observed. Conclusion: Mandibular setback surgery resulted in a significant reduction of lower oral cavity volume, which was most likely attributable to the posterior movement of the mandible. More subjects and long-term observations should be performed to assess the changes of oropharyngeal configuration following mandibular setback surgery.
Handling Multi-Channel Hidden Terminals Using a Single Interface in Cognitive Radio Networks
Shan Liang,Myung Kyun Kim,Yun Sung Eum 한국정보과학회 2009 한국정보과학회 학술발표논문집 Vol.36 No.1D
Cognitive networks enable efficient sharing of the radio spectrum. Multi-hop cognitive network is a cooperative network in which cognitive users take help of their neighbors to forward data to the destination. Control signals used to enable cooperation communicate through a common control channel (CCC). Such usage introduces conditions like channel saturation which degrades the overall performance of the network. Thus, exchanging control information is a major challenge in cognitive radio networks. Moreover the multi-channel hidden terminal problem will be another most important challenge in cognitive radio networks, in which the multi-channel hidden terminals can decrease the throughput and make much overhead even let the whole network invalidation. In this paper, there is a novel MAC protocol for resolve the multi-channel hidden terminal problem using a single interface which avoid the CCC.

Splenectomy has been reported to improve liver fibrosis in patients with cirrhosis and hypersplenism. However, the mechanisms remain unclear. Tumor necrosis factor superfamily 14 (TNFSF14; also known as LIGHT) is highly expressed in the context of fibrosis and promotes disease progression in patients with fibrotic diseases such as pulmonary and skin fibrosis. Here, we determined whether splenectomy controls the production of LIGHT to improve liver fibrosis. Splenectomy reduced serum LIGHT levels in cirrhotic patients with hypersplenism and a ConA-induced liver fibrosis mouse model. Blocking LIGHT resulted in the downregulation of TGF-β1 in RAW264.7 cells. LIGHT treatment of RAW264.7 and JS1 cells in coculture regulated transforming growth factor-β1 (TGF-β1) expression through the activation of JNK signaling. Small interfering RNA-mediated silencing of lymphotoxin β receptor (LTβR) in macrophages resulted in pronounced decreases in the levels of fibrosis and αSMA in JS1 cells. These results indicated that LIGHT bound to LTβR and drove liver fibrosis in vitro. Blocking TGF-β1 abolished the effect of LIGHT in vitro. Furthermore, the administration of recombinant murine LIGHT protein-induced liver fibrosis with splenectomy, while blocking LIGHT without splenectomy improved liver fibrosis in vivo, revealing that the decrease in fibrosis following splenectomy was directly related to reduced levels of LIGHT. Thus, high levels of LIGHT derived from the spleen and hepatic macrophages activate JNK signaling and lead to increased TGF-β1 production in hepatic macrophages. Splenectomy attenuates liver fibrosis by decreasing the expression of LIGHT.

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a progressive, uniformly fatal, degenerative disorder of the upper motor neurons that does not currently have an effective treatment regimen. Here, we report two patients with ALS who were treated with 4 weeks of acupuncture injection point therapy using Enercel. These patients were administered 0.25e0.5 cc Enercel Plus IM to specific acupuncture points for 5 days per week for 4weeks. Patient #1 presented with flaccid paralysis of all four extremities and impaired speech and swallowing. By Week 4, she demonstrated significant improvement in her motor strength in all four extremities (R > L) and improved speech and swallowing. However, she did not continue to receive the Enercel acupoint injections, and she subsequently demonstrated a slow, progressive loss of neurological function during the ensuing 3 months, as shown on follow-up examinations. Patient #2 had significantly impaired speech and mild motor loss in the upper extremities and the left leg. After 4 weeks of treatment, his voice had significantly improved to the point where his speech was understandable and his motor functions had returned to normal. He continued receiving Enercel acupoint injections during the 3-month follow-up period and his clinical improvements were maintained. Thus, these two patients with ALS showed clinical improvements after 4 weeks of Enercel acupoint injection therapy. Follow-up data suggests that ongoing therapy may be necessary in order to maintain these positive effects. This preliminary study merits further study and confirmation.
Fast Thresholding Based on Improved Minimum Cross Entropy

Image segmentation is an important and classic problem in image processing and computer vision. Thresholding is applied to many fields, because of its less computation and stable performance. The key of thresholding method is to determine the adaptive threshold. In order to segment biological image effectively, a new adaptive thresholding method is proposed. First, two dimension minimum entropy is computed based on gray-gradient co-occurrence matrix; and then the genetic algorithm is applied to encode the two-dimension threshold vector; Finally, the optimum threshold is calculated based on fitness function and uniformity measurement(UM). Experimental results show that this method has three advantages: 1) improve computational efficiency so that it can run in real time; 2) retain more object and edge information so that it can meet the practical requirement; 3) robust to the uneven distribution of light.
C1420T Polymorphism of Cytosolic Serine Hydroxymethyltransferase and Risk of Cancer: a Meta-analysis
Zhong, Shan-Liang,Zhang, Jun,Hu, Qing,Chen, Wei-Xian,Ma, Teng-Fei,Zhao, Jian-Hua Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2014 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.15 No.5
A series of studies have explored the role of cytosolic serine hydroxymethyltransferase (SHMT1) C1420T polymorphism in cancer risk, but their results were conflicting rather than conclusive. To derive a more precise estimation of the association between C1420T and cancer risk, the present meta-analysis of 28 available studies with 15,121 cases and 18,023 controls was conducted. The results revealed that there was no significant association between the polymorphism and cancer risk overall. In stratified analysis by cancer type (breast cancer, gastrointestinal cancer, leukemia, lymphoma, and others), the results showed that 1420T allele was associated with decreased risk in leukemia (CT vs. CC: OR= 0.825, 95% CI =0.704-0.966; and CT+TT vs. CC: OR= 0.838, 95% CI = 0.722-0.973), but the same results were not present for other cancer types. When subgroup analysis was performed by source of control (population-based [PB] and hospital-based [HB]), a borderline inverse association was observed for the HB subgroup (CT vs. CC: OR= 0.917, 95% CI = 0.857-0.982) but not for the PB subgroup. Stratifying by geographic area (America, Asia and Europe), significant inverse association was only found in Asia subgroup (CT vs. CC: OR= 0.674, 95% CI = 0.522-0.870). In summary, the findings suggest that SHMT1 C1420T polymorphism is not associated with overall cancer development, but might decrease cancer susceptibility of Asians as well as reduce leukemia risk. Large well-designed epidemiological studies will be necessary to validate the risk identified in the current meta-analysis.
