Left ventricular (LV) thrombi may be caused by various conditions, particularly myocardial infarction. In most cases, LV thrombus occurs in patients with a significantly reduced ejection fraction. A LV thrombus is extremely rare in patients with normal LV function. We report a case of LV thrombus initially detected on transthoracic echocardiography and confirmed using cardiac magnetic resonance imaging in a patient with normal LV wall motion. We highlight the rarity of this condition and the usefulness of cardiac magnetic resonance imaging in the diagnosis of LV thrombus.

Background: Phototrichogram analysis of normal scalp hair characteristics in Asian populations is not well characterized. Objectives: To investigate the normal hair characteristics of South Koreans using a phototrichogram. Methods: We enrolled 674 males and 683 females between the ages of 10 and 69. Hair density, thickness and the white hair percentage were measured via phototrichogram. Six scalp sites, including front, top, the peak between top and back, back, and the right and left sides were targeted. Results: The mean hair density, hair thickness, and the white hair percentage were not significantly different between genders at any scalp site. The mean hair density and thickness were significantly different according to scalp sites. Hair density declined with age, especially at the peak between top and back. Males and females showed different patterns of aging in hair density. Hair thickness changed little with age. But, mean hair thickness generally tended to increase until the 20s, reach a plateau between the 20s and 50s, and decrease after the 50s. The mean white hair percentages were 1.84 ± 4.24% in males and 1.66 ± 4.21% in females. The mean white hair percentages were significantly increased in subjects greater than 40 years of age. Conclusion: We described the normal characteristics and aging patterns of scalp hair in a Korean population.

Objectives: HIF-1β (ARNT) formed dimerization of HIF-1α, involved in various aspects of cancer biology, including proliferation and survival under hypoxic condition. This is an in vitro study that investigated the mechanism by which small interference HIF-1β (siHIF-1β) inhibits HIF-1α dimerization and thus it lead to suppress tumor cell growth. Method: Three HCC cell lines (HepG2, Huh 7 and Hep3B) were transfected with HIF-1β coding siRNA and cultured under hypoxic conditions (1% O2, 24 hours). Following transfection, the expression levels of HIF-1β , HIF-1α, and growth factors were examined through immuno-blotting. In addition, tumor growth was measured by MTT assay and tumor activity was measured by TUNEL, tumor invasion and migration assay. Results: The inhibition of HIF-1β by small interference RNA (siHIF-1β) led to suppression of tumor cell growth through inhibition of HIF dimerization under hypoxia condition. This effect was increased and maximized at 48 hrs after treatment of HIF-1β coding siRNA. Inhibition of HIF dimerization through treatment of siHIF-1β also regulated the expression of tumor growth related factors (VEGF, EGF and HGF). Inhibition of HIF- dimerization precluded tumor invasion and migration in variable HCC cell lines. Conclusions: Inhibition of HIF dimerization by siHIF-1β may lead to anti-tumor effects in a hypoxic condition of tumor environment.

함수 f의 리이만 적분은 그 함수에 의하여 정해지는 네트의 극한에 의하여 정의된다. 리이만 적분의 정의에서 네트의 정의역은 모든 tagged 분할 전체집합 P이다. P에는 P를 directed set로 만드는 두 개의 준순서가 있는데 하나는 세븐에의 한 순서이고 다른 하나는 분할의 노름에 의한 순서이다. 이 두 순서는 똑같은 함수 f에 대해서도 서로 다른 네트를 만들지만 극한은 같아서 모두 리만적분을 극한으로 갖는다. 이 논문에서는 또하나의 순서를 P에 주어서 제 3의 네트를 만들고 이 네트의 극한도 리이만 적분과 같다는 것을 증명하였다. Usually the Riemann integral of a function f is defined as a limit of a net determined by f. The domain P of the net is the set of all tagged partitions of a fixed interval. There are two partial orders on P that make P a directed set. One is the order by refinement of partitions and the other by norm of partitions. The two order produce the same Riemann integral of the function f. In this paper another order is defined on P that makes P a directed set and produces the Riemann integral.

<▼1><P>Incorporation of single-layer graphene oxide into a highly porous support layer provides a thin-film composite reverse osmosis membrane with superior water flux.</P></▼1><▼2><P>In this study, we demonstrated that a reduction in solely the concentration of the polymer solution for preparation of the support layer effectively enhances the water flux of a thin-film composite (TFC) reverse osmosis (RO) membrane. However, a decrease in the polymer concentration caused the sub-surface structure of the support layer to become too porous, which unavoidably weakened the mechanical strength of the support layer. To overcome the problem, we prepared a highly porous support layer with improved mechanical strength by incorporating graphene oxide (GO) platelets. The thickness of the GO platelets was controlled by adjusting the mechanical energy input per volume of the precursor solution. We confirmed that well-exfoliated GO platelets (mean thickness: about 1.5 nm) are more effective in enhancing the mechanical properties of the support layer. The TFC RO membrane made of the GO composite support layer had almost 1.6 to 4 times higher water flux with comparable salt rejection compared to both the current upper bounds of the RO membranes prepared by modification of the active layer and commercial RO membranes.</P></▼2>

Background: Although it has been reported that the excimer laser (EL) treatment is effective for alopecia areata (AA), there has been no comprehensive systematic review of its efficacy and safety. Objectives: This study aimed to systematically review the benefits and harms of EL treatment in AA patients. Methods: A comprehensive database search of MEDLINE, EMBASE, Web of Science and the Cochrane library databases from inception to December 31, 2018, was performed for all prospective studies. Of 22 studies initially identified, the full texts of 11 studies were assessed for eligibility, and 5 were finally included in the analysis. The primary outcome was the proportion of treatment success, defined as cosmetically acceptable hair regrowth or at least 75% regrowth of each designated patch or whole lesions in a patient. Results: We analyzed 5 randomized controlled trials comprising a total of 87 AA patches/patients. The EL treatment showed a significantly higher treatment success rate than the untreated control group (risk difference [RD] 50.3%; 95% confidence interval [CI] 21.1-79.5%; number needed to treat 2). No special harm was found related to the use of EL. In a subgroup analysis excluding cases with alopecia totalis or universalis, the EL treatment had a superior result (RD 59.1%; 95% CI 25.1-93.1%) as well. Conclusion: This systematic review revealed the significant benefit of EL in the treatment of AA. The use of EL should be encouraged for AA patients.
Efficient Peer-to-Peer File Sharing Using Network Coding in MANET

Mobile peer-to-peer (P2P) systems have recently got in the limelight of the research community that is striving to build efficient and effective mobile content addressable networks. Along this line of research, we propose a new peer-to-peer file sharing protocol suited to mobile ad hoc networks (MANET). The main ingredients of our protocol are network coding and mobility assisted data propagation, i.e., single-hop communication. We argue that network coding in combination with single-hop communication allows P2P file sharing systems in MANET to operate in a more efficient manner and helps the systems to deal with typical MANET issues such as dynamic topology and intermittent connectivity as well as various other issues that have been disregarded in previous MANET P2P researches such as addressing, node/user density, non-cooperativeness, and unreliable channel. Via simulation, we show that our P2P protocol based on network coding and single-hop communication allows shorter file downloading delays compared to an existing MANET P2P protocol.

Background: Postmarketing surveillance is conducted to establish drug safety and effectiveness under real practice. Objectives: To validate ustekinumab’s effectiveness and safety in the treatment of adult Korean patients with plaque psoriasis under real practice. Methods: This was a prospective, observational, and multi-center study. The study subjects were aged 18 years and above, who were administered ustekinumab for treating plaque psoriasis. Results: The study included 977 patients; 66.9% were male, with a mean±standard deviation of BSA(%) of 27.0±18.3 and mean PASI of 18.1±9.7. The effectiveness analysis included 581 patients who had at least one follow-up assessment and met treatment criteria per local label and reimbursement guidelines; of these patients, 287 had effectiveness data for visit 6. The timing of visit 6 occurred at 53.7±2.1, weeks; at visit 6 91.6%, 51.2%, and 9.4% achieved PASI75, PASI90, and PASI100 responses, respectively. Adverse events (AEs) occurred in 11.5% yielding an incidence rate of 21.5/100 patient-years (PYs). Serious AEs occurred in 0.8% with an incidence rate of 1.2/100 PYs. The estimated 1-year drug retention rate was 87.7%. Multiple logistic regression analyses showed that higher baseline PASI score and no prior biologic exposure were significant predictors for PASI90 response at visit 6. Conclusion: Ustekinumab is effective and safe, with high drug retention in the treatment of adult Korean patients with plaque psoriasis in real-world practice.

<P>Widespread antimicrobial use and concomitant resistance have led to a significant threat to public health. Because inappropriate use and overuse of antibiotics based on insufficient knowledge are one of the major drivers of antibiotic resistance, education about prudent antibiotic use aimed at both the prescribers and the public is important. This review investigates recent studies on the effect of interventions for promoting prudent antibiotics prescribing. Up to now, most educational efforts have been targeted to medical professionals, and many studies showed that these educational efforts are significantly effective in reducing antibiotic prescribing. Recently, the development of educational programs to reduce antibiotic use is expanding into other groups, such as the adult public and children. The investigation of the contents of educational programs for prescribers and the public demonstrates that it is important to develop effective educational programs suitable for each group. In particular, it seems now to be crucial to develop appropriate curricula for teaching medical and nonmedical (pharmacy, dentistry, nursing, veterinary medicine, and midwifery) undergraduate students about general medicine, microbial virulence, mechanism of antibiotic resistance, and judicious antibiotic prescribing.</P>
