Fast block size and mode decision algorithm for intra prediction in H.264/AVC

<P>The H.264/AVC standard achieves high compression performance compared to existing video coding standards by employing the rate distortion optimization (RDO) technique. All possible combinations of modes are calculated to find the minimum rate distortion cost which results in significant computational complexity. In this paper, we propose a fast block size and mode decision method for intra prediction, which can effectively reduce computational burden. For fast block size decision, intra16x16 is selectively searched based on the homogeneity of inner-8x8 block of macroblock (MB). For fast mode decision, the search of intra16x16 and intra4x4 prediction modes is restricted by the similarity of the reference pixels. Moreover, by considering the similarities of the upper reference pixels and left reference pixels separately, considerable reduction of computational complexity is achieved. The results of simulations demonstrate maxima of 79% and 77% average time savings with negligible loss in PSNRY and bitrate.</P>
Intra Prediction Algorithm Using Adaptive Modes

H.264/AVC는 화면 내, 화면 간 예측을 포함한 다양한 부호화 기술을 이용, 높은 부호화 성능을 보여준다. 그러나 화면 내 예측은 화면 간 예측에 비해 여전히 많은 부호화 데이터를 포함하고 있다. 본 논문에서는 적응적 모드선택 기술을 포함한 새로운 화면 내 부호화 기술을 제안한다. 인접 모드의 결합을 통한 새로운 부호화 모드와 단순화된 gradient 모드가 추가되면서 세밀한 방향의 특징 및 gradation 영역을 효과적으로 부호화한다. 또한 주변블록을 통해서 적절한 모드를 선택적으로 제공하면서 상대적으로 적은 복잡도와 높은 부호화 성능을 보여준다. 제안한 방법은 1.72배의 복잡도 증가수준에서 1.96%의 비트율 절감 및 0.25 dB의 PSNR 향상을 보여주고 있다. H.264/AVC has shown high coding efficiency by using various coding tools, including intra and inter prediction. However, there are still many more redundancy components in intra prediction than in inter prediction. In this paper, a novel intra prediction method is proposed with adaptive mode selection. The combined intra prediction modes and simplified gradient modes are added in order to refine the directional feature and gradation region. Suitable modes are selected according to the neighboring blocks that provide a high compression rate and lower computational complexity. The improvement of the proposed method is 1.96% in terms of the bitrate, 0.25 dB in PSNR, and 1.72 times in terms of the computational complexity.
Artemisia gmelinii Extract Enhances Innate Immune Response Mediated by Natural Killer Cells

The Artemisia gmelinii (AG) is globally distributed and have been used for medicinal purpose in Korea. Prior studies have reported that polyphenol constituents from the Artemisia genus have multiple functions including anti-cancer, anti-inflammatory, anti-allergic, and anti-oxidative effects. Natural Killer (NK) cells are predominant innate lymphocyte subsets that possess promising clinical utilization such as anti-tumor and anti-viral responses. In this study, our results revealed that AG significantly enhances NK cell-associated cytokine IFN-g expression and cytotoxic activity against YAC-1 cells in mouse splenic and mesenteric NK cells. Accordingly, utilizing the human NK92 cells with K562 cells, as target cells, we double-checked that AG enhances NK cell cytotoxic activity. Our qRT-PCR analyses revealed that AG enhanced IFN-g expression in both mouse and human NK cell lines. In addition, our flow cytometry analyses showed AG enhances the proportion of NKp46+CD49b+ NK cells in the mouse spleen ex vivo. Taking together, these observations demonstrated that AG activates NK cells and may contribute to enhance the innate immune responses.

Photocatalytic decomposition of polyethylene film with TiO₂ nanotube powders (NTs) was investigated under UV irradiation at ambient conditions. TiO₂ NTs composed of individual nanotubes are prepared by rapid breakdown anodization technique. A comparative study on the photocatalytic decomposition of polyethylene-TiO₂ composite films prepared using TiO₂ nanoparticles (NPs) or TiO₂ NTs (NTs), respectively, was conducted under UV irradiation. Polyethylene film incorporated with TiO₂ NTs showed 26 wt% weight loss after 200 h under UV irradiation about two times faster decomposition rate than TiO₂ NPs which is attributed to large surface area of TiO₂ NTs.
