<P>The thin-film growth conditions in a plasma-enhanced atomic layer deposition for the (3.0-4.5) nm thick HfO<SUB>2</SUB> film were optimized to use the film as the resistive switching element in a neuromorphic circuit. The film was intended to be used as a feasible synapse with analog-type conductance-tuning capability. The 4.5 nm thick HfO<SUB>2</SUB> films on both conventional TiN and a new RuO<SUB>2</SUB> bottom electrode required the electroforming process for them to operate as a feasible resistive switching memory, which was the primary source of the undesirable characteristics as the synapse. Therefore, electroforming-free performance was necessary, which could be accomplished by thinning the HfO<SUB>2</SUB> film down to 3.0 nm. However, the device with only the RuO<SUB>2</SUB> bottom electrode offered the desired functionality without involving too high leakage or shorting problems, which are due to the recovery of the stoichiometric composition of the HfO<SUB>2</SUB> near the RuO<SUB>2</SUB> layer. In conjunction with the Ta top electrode, which provided the necessary oxygen vacancies to the HfO<SUB>2</SUB> layer, and the high functionality of the RuO<SUB>2</SUB> as the scavenger of excessive incorporated oxygen vacancies, which appeared to be inevitable during the repeated switching operation, the Ta/3.0 nm HfO<SUB>2</SUB>/RuO<SUB>2</SUB> provided a highly useful synaptic device component in the neuromorphic hardware system.</P> [FIG OMISSION]</BR>

Radiation is the most useful treatment modality for cancer patients. It initiates a series of signal cascades such as DNA damage response (DDR) signaling for repairing damaged DNA, arresting the cell cycle, and inducing cell death. Until now, few genes have been found to be regulated by radiation, which explains the molecular mechanisms of cellular responses to radiation. Although the transcriptional changes caused by radiation have been widely investigated, little is known about the direct evidence for the transcriptional control of DDR-related genes. Here, we examined the radiosensitivity of two non-small cell lung cancer cell lines (H460 and H1299), which have different p53 status. We monitored the time-dependent changes of 24 DDR-related gene expressions via microarray analysis. Based on the basal expression levels and temporal patterns, we further classified 24 DDR-related genes into four subgroups. Then, we also addressed the protein levels of several DDR-related genes such as TopBP1, Chk1 and Chk2, confirming the results of microarray analysis. Together, these results indicate that the expression patterns of DDR-related genes are associated with radiosensitivity and with the p53 statuses of H460 and H1299, which adds to the understanding of the complex biological responses to radiation.
Anti-GQ1b Antibody Syndrome Presenting with Severe Headache

Anti-GQ1b antibody syndrome, including Miller Fisher syndrome, Guillain-Barré syndrome with ophthalmoplegia, Bickerstaff’s brainstem encephalitis, and acute ophthalmoplegia without ataxia, has overlapped clinical symptoms and mostly associated with anti-GQ1b immunoglobulin (Ig) G antibody. We report two cases of anti-GQ1b antibody syndrome mainly presenting with a severe headache. The 60-year-old man was admitted for severe headache and gait disturbance. Neuro-logical examination revealed limb and truncal ataxia, areflexia, nystagmus, and ophthalmoplegia. Serum IgG anti-GQ1b antibody was positive. He recovered after intravenous (IV) immunoglobulin and steroid. The 23-year-old man suffered from severe headache (visual analogue scale=10) within the periorbital area. Ophthal-moplegia with gaze-evoked nystagmus were revealed. Serum IgG anti-GQ1b and anti-GT1a antibodies were positive. Headache was improved by IV immuno-globulin and steroid. The pathophysiology of headache in anti-GQ1b antibody syndrome is largely unknown. The affected nerve or structures in the brainstem including the trigeminovascular system may induce intractable severe headache.

미국에 거주하는 한국인들은 다양한 스트레스를 경험하게 된다. 이들에게 종교기관(religious organizations)에서 제공하는 비공식적인 지지 네트워크(support network)는 중요한 자원으로 이용된다. 본 연구에서는 미국에 거주하는 한국 유학생과 이민자 131명을 대상으로 한국 기독교 기관에서 이루어지는 정서적 지지와 정보적 지지의 교환이 긍정적, 부정적 사회적 상호작용(social interactions)에 미치는 영향에 대하여 분석하였다. 위계적 다중회귀 분석방법을 이용하여 다음의 4가지 가설-(1) 정서적 지지 수혜와 긍정적 상호작용; (2) 정보적 지지 수혜와 긍정적 상호작용; (3)정서적 지지 제공과 부정적 상호작용; (4) 정보적 지지 제공과 부정적 상호작용 간의 관계-을 검증하였다. 본 연구에서 사회적 지지의 교환이 사회적 상호작용에 미치는 영향은 사회적 지지의 종류(정서적 지지와 정보적 지지)에 따라 다르게 나타났다. 정서적 지지의 수혜와 긍정적 상호작용은 정적인 선형관계를 나타낸 반면, 정보적 지지 수혜와 긍정적 상호작용은 비선형 관계를 나타냈다. 정서적 지지 제공과 부정적 상호작용은 정적인 선형관계를 나타낸 반면, 정보적 지지 제공은 부정적 상호작용과 통계적으로 유의한 관계가 없는 것으로 나타났다. 한국인 기독교 기관(Korean Christian organizations)에서 이루어지는 사회적 지지는 구성원들에게 긍정적인 혜택을 제공하기도 하고 부정적인 스트레스를 가져오기도 한다. 이러한 관계에 대한 이해는 한국인 유학생과 이민자들의 심리사회적인 어려움을 해결하기 위한 사회복지 실천적 함의를 제공해 줄 수 있을 것이다. The study of informal support networks in religious organizations is important because these organizations are a supplemental or alternate sources of assistance for Koreans living in the United States. This study examined the exchange of emotional and informational support as related to the quality of social interactions of 131 Korean heritage students attending university-affiliated Korean Christian organizations in the United States. Four hypothesized relationships—(1) receiving emotional support and positive interactions; (2) receiving informational support and positive interactions; (3) providing emotional support and negative interactions and (4) providing informational support and negative interactions —were tested using hierarchical multiple regression analyses. Study results indicate that the association between support exchange and social interactions varied according to the type of support in which Korean students engaged in Korean Christian organizations. The results showed a positive linear relationship between receiving emotional support and positive interactions, whereas there was a curvilinear relationship between receiving informational support and positive interactions. Providing emotional support had a positive linear relationship with negative interactions, whereas providing informational support showed no significant linear relationships with negative interactions. Greater understanding of the potential benefits and stressors associated with social support in Korean Christian organizations may lead to more informed social work practice addressing the needs of high-risk cohorts of both Korean international and Korean American students.
DTD 여과 및 질의 확장에 의한 효율적인 XML 문서의 정보 검색

본 논문은 정보검색의 대상이 되는 XML 문서를 효율적으로 선별하기 위해 온톨로지를 기반으로 XML 문서를 여과하였으며, 여과된 XML 문서를 대상으로 문서에 내재한 정보를 효과적으로 검색하도록 XML 질의를 확장하였다. 이를 위해, 온톨로지로부터 포괄적 DTD를 생성하는 알고리즘을 개발하였고, XML 문서의 효과적인 정보 검색을 위해 온톨로지의 개념 구조와 연관 관계를 분석하여 XML 질의를 확장하는 알고리즘을 개발하였다. 제안한 문서 여과와 질의 확장 알고리즘의 효과를 샘플 XML 문서에 적용하였다.

Although the survival rate of patients with stomach cancer has been increased by the early diagnosis and treatment of the disease, it still remained the second most common cause of death with cancer. Studies about the premalignant causes of stomach cancer has been in progress, actively. It is well known that the risk of development of stomach cancer increases after the partial gastrectomy far the treatment of benign gastric disease. The importance of regular follow up of gastrofiberscopic examination is suggested for the early diagnosis of possible stomach cancer in these patients. In addition, it is known that the vagotomy and pyloroplasty for the treatment of duodenal ulcer increase the risk of the development of stomach cancer. However, no case has been reported in Korea. We report a case of adenocarcinoma of stomach occurring after tnmcal vagotomy and pyloroplasty, which have been performed for the treatment of duodenal ulcer perforation with review of relevant literatures.

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) usually spreads to the lung and regional lymph nodes by direct extention, lymphatic route, and vascular dissemination. Rarely, it happens to metastasize to the bones. Metastases to other organs such as bones seem to occur by erosions of pulmonary veins into the systemic circulation or retrogradely, into vertebral venous plexuses via portal vein. Treatment results were poor with a median survival of 5 months. We experienced multiple bone metastases in a 61-year-old male patient with small HCC. In conclusion, this report is valuable in presenting unusual multiple bone metastases in small HCC.
