The Response to Oxidative Stress Induced by Magnesium Deficiency in Kidney Bean Plants

To understand the plant response to oxidative stresses, we studied the influence of magnesium (Mg^++) deficiency on the formation of hydrogen peroxide (H_2O_2), malondialdehyde (MDA), and protease activity in kidney bean plants. The expression pattern of proteins under Mg^++ deficiency also was examined via two-dimensional electrophoresis. The formation of H_2O_2 and MDA increased in the primary leaves of plants grown in a nutrient solution deficient in Mg^++. Protease activity in Mg^++ -deficient plants was also higher than in those grown with sufficient Mg^++. The expression pattern of the proteins showed that 25 new proteins were generated and 64 proteins disappeared under Mg^++- deficient conditions. Therefore, a deficiency in Mg^++ may cause oxidative stress and a change in protein expression. Some of these proteins may be related to the oxidative stress induced by Mg^++ deficiency.
Safety Design of the Loop Heat Pipe (LHP) by the Hazard Analysis

The LHP uses the capillary head instead of the mechanical pump to transfer the fluid. It does not have any moving parts and transfer the fluid by the capillary head between the vapor and liquid interface of the wick like a heat pipe (HP). Moreover, vapor and liquid flows in the same direction. It can reduce the loss of the pressure in the wick (very short wick in the evaporator) and can transfer large heat over long distance compared with HP. It is necessary that we do the hazard analysis that is a part of the safety design, for the benefit of eliminating and inhibit the hazard. In this paper, we describe the hazard analysis of LHP.

Granulocyte-colony stimulating factor (G-CSF) is a naturally occurring glycoprotein that stimulates the proliferation and maturation of precursor cells in the bone marrow into fully differentiated neutrophils. Several reports of G-CSF-producing malignant tumors have been published, but scarcely any in the hepatobiliary system, such as in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Here, we encountered a 69-yr-old man with a hepatic tumor who had received right hepatic resection. He showed leukocytosis of 25,450/mL along with elevated serum G-CSF. Histological examination of surgical samples demonstrated immunohistochemical staining for G-CSF, but not for G-CSF receptor. The patient survived without recurrence for four years, but ultimately passed away with multiple bone metastases. In light of the above, clinicians may consider G-CSF-producing HCC when encountering patients with leukocytosis and a hepatic tumor. More cases are needed to clarify the clinical picture of G-CSF-producing HCC.
Effect of Colored Potato Flakes Against Acetaminophen-induced Liver Damage in Rats

We examined the hepatoprotective effects of colored potato flakes on acetaminophen(AAP)-induced liver damage in rats. F344/DuCrj (8 week-old) rats were fed a cholesterol-free diet with 54,9486 g of α-corn starch/100 g diet and were orally treated with 25% colored flakes of Kitamurasaki (KM: light purple), Northern Ruby (NR: red), and Queen (SQ: medium purple) potatoes co-administered with AAP (0.5 g/100 g diet)for 4 weeks. The hepatic thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances (TBARS) values in the KM, NR, and SQ group were significantly lower (p<0.05) than those in the control groups with and wothout AAP. Furthermore, the hepatic catalase, Mn-superoxide dismutase (SOD), and Cu/Zn-SOD mRNA levels in the KM, NR, and SQ groups were higher than those in the control groups with and without AAP. The present findings suggest that colored potato flakes are useful as a prophylactic agent against oxidative liver damage.
