        Diversity and distribution of gall-forming aphids of the genus Pemphigus (Sternorrhyncha: Aphididae, Pemphigini) in Eastern Siberia

        We reviewed the diversity and distribution of the gall-forming aphids of the genus Pemphigus developingon poplars in Eastern Siberia. As a result, the checklist of this group was compiled comprising 13 speciesdistributed in this macroregion that accounts about 29% of the world’s known poplar-feeding Pemphigusspecies. Biogeographical and host plant data are provided for all listed species. Pemphigus birimatusIvanovskaja, Pem. laurifoliae Dolgova, and Pem. matsumurai Monzen were documented for the first timein the Republic of Tuva. In addition, the latter two species were also discovered in the Republic ofBuryatia and Zabaikalskii Krai, respectively. Two poplars Populus sibirica and Pop. laurifolia wererecorded as novel hosts for 3 Pemphigus species. The origin of Pem. passeki Börner, Pem. spyrothecaePasserini, and Pem. microsetosus Aoki in Eastern Siberia remains unclear. Four species Pem. populiCourchet, Pem. bursarius (Linnaeus), Pem. matsumurai, and Pem. spyrothecae Lichtenstein cause noticeabledamage to poplars in man-made plantations.

        Altered potassium ATP channel signaling in mesenteric arteries of old high salt-fed rats

        Purpose: Both aging and the consumption of a high salt diet are associated with clear changes in the vascular system that can lead to the development of cardiovascular disease; however the mechanisms are not clearly understood. Therefore, we examined whether aging and the consumption of excess salt alters the function of potassium ATP-dependent channel signaling in mesenteric arteries. Methods: Young (7 months) and old (29 months) Fischer 344 x Brown Norway rats were fed a control or a high salt diet (8% NaCl) for 12 days and mesenteric arteries were utilized for vascular reactivity measurements. Results: Acetylcholine-induced endothelium relaxation was significantly reduced in old arteries (81 ± 4%) when compared with young arteries (92 ± 2%). Pretreatment with the potassium-ATP channel blocker glibenclamide reduced relaxation to acetylcholine in young arteries but did not alter dilation in old arteries. On a high salt diet, endothelium dilation to acetylcholine was significantly reduced in old salt arteries (60 ± 3%) when compared with old control arteries (81 ± 4%). Glibenclamide reduced acetylcholine-induced dilation in young salt arteries but had no effect on old salt arteries. Dilation to cromakalim, a potassium-ATP channel opener, was reduced in old salt arteries when compared with old control arteries. Conclusions: These findings demonstrate that aging impairs endothelium-dependent relaxation in mesenteric arteries. Furthermore, a high salt diet alters the function of potassium-ATP-dependent channel signaling in old isolated mesenteric arteries and affects the mediation of relaxation stimuli.

        Exploring fauna of Microlepidoptera in South Siberia: novel regional records and interception of quarantine species

        We report the results of a faunistic study of Microlepidoptera performed in Southern Siberia usingdiverse sampling techniques allowing to cover various taxonomic groups. The provided taxonomic list iscomprised of 64 species from 44 genera and 18 families, where all species represent novel geographicalrecords. Of them, only 62 species inhabit Southern Siberia, the other two species, Tuta absoluta (Meyrick)and Carposina sasakii Matsumura are quarantine pests intercepted in this region. Eighteen genera and 3families (Glyphipterigidae, Chimabachidae, and Oecophoridae) are reported for the first time from thestudied region. Overall, 11 species from 7 families are novel for Siberia. Two species, Bucculatrix pannonicaand Coleophora curictae, are newly recorded in Russia. For the species newly recorded in the faunaof Siberia and Russia, male or female genitalia are illustrated. For Coleophora curictae, representing anovel record for Russia, the bionomics is given for the first time.

        OPEN ACCESS : Age Impaired endothelium-dependent vasodilation is improved by resveratrol in rat mesenteric arteries

        [Purpose] To determine whether resveratrol improves the adverse effects age on vascular function in mesenteric arteries (MAs), and diminishes the hyperactivity in adrenal gland with age. [Methods] Male F344 x Brown Norway rats were assigned to 6-month control (YC), 6-month resveratrol (YR), 24-month control (OC) and 24-month resveratrol (OR). Resveratrol (15 mg/kg) was provided to resveratrol groups in drinking water for 14 days. [Results] Concentration response curves to phenylephrine (PE, 10(-9)-10(-5)M), acetylcholine (Ach, 10(-9)-10(-5)M) and resveratrol (10(-8)-10(-4)M) were evaluated in pressurized isolated MAs. The Ach concentration-response curve was right shifted with maximal response diminished in OC compared with YC rats. These effects were reversed by resveratrol treatment. The resveratrol-mediated relaxant responses were unchanged with age or resveratrol suggesting an endothelium-independent mechanism. Resveratrol tended to increase endothelial nitric oxide synthase; caused no effect on copper-zinc superoxide dismutase; and normalized the age-related elevatation in DβH and NPY levels in adrenal medulla, two indicators of sympathetic activity [Conclusion] These data indicate that resveratrol reverses age-related dysfunction in endothelium-dependent vasodilation in MAs and partially reverses hyperactivity of adrenomedullary function with age. This treatment may have a therapeuticpotential in the treatment of cardiovascular diseases or hypertension in the elderly.

        Trends in intensity-modulated radiation therapy use for rectal cancer in the neoadjuvant setting: a National Cancer Database analysis

        Purpose: Traditionally, three-dimensional conformal radiation therapy (3D-CRT) is used for neoadjuvant chemoradiation in locally advanced rectal cancer. Intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) was later developed for more conformal dose distribution, with the potential for reduced toxicity across many disease sites. We sought to use the National Cancer Database (NCDB) to examine trends and predictors for IMRT use in rectal cancer. Materials and Methods: We queried the NCDB from 2004 to 2015 for patients with rectal adenocarcinoma treated with neoadjuvant concurrent chemoradiation to standard doses followed by surgical resection. Odds ratios were used to determine predictors of IMRT use. Univariable and multivariable Cox regressions were used to determine potential predictors of overall survival (OS). Propensity matching was used to account for any indication bias. Results: Among 21,490 eligible patients, 3,131 were treated with IMRT. IMRT use increased from 1% in 2004 to 22% in 2014. Predictors for IMRT use included increased N stage, higher comorbidity score, more recent year, treatment at an academic facility, increased income, and higher educational level. On propensity-adjusted, multivariable analysis, male gender, increased distance to facility, higher comorbidity score, IMRT technique, government insurance, African-American race, and non-metro location were predictive of worse OS. Of note, the complete response rate at time of surgery was 28% with non-IMRT and 21% with IMRT. Conclusion: IMRT use has steadily increased in the treatment of rectal cancer, but still remains only a fraction of overall treatment technique, more often reserved for higher disease burden

        Flexible thermoelectric module based on zinc oxide thin film grown via SILAR

        In this work, we used the low temperature solution growth Successive Ionic Layer Adsorption and Reaction (SILAR) for a deposition of the nanostructured undoped and indium doped (ZnO and ZnO:In) thin films on flexible polyimide (PI) substrates for their use as cheap non-toxic thermoelectric materials in the flexible thermoelectric modules of planar type to power up portable and wearable electronics and miniature devices. The use of a zincate solution in the SILAR method allows to obtain ZnO:In film, which after post-growth annealing at 300 ◦C has low resistivity ρ ≈ 0.02 Ω m, and high Seebeck coefficient 147 μV/K and thermoelectric power factor ~1 μW K 2 m 1 at near-room temperatures. As evidence of the operability of the manufactured films as the basis of the TE device, we have designed and tested experimental lightweight thin-film thermoelectric module. This TE module is able to produce specific output power 0.8 μW/m2 at ΔT = 50 K.
