Living in Pain and Stigma: A Look at Lived Experiences of Mothers with Transsexual Adult Children

Purpose: A mother whose child wants to undergo gender transitioning may have different and even challengingexperiences. These challenges are much more intense in the Middle East and Muslim countries than west countries,which are very conservative towards changes. This study aimed to explore lived experiences of mothers withtranssexual adult children. Methods: This qualitative study was conducted using a descriptive phenomenologicalapproach. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews with 17 mothers with transsexual adult childrenin 2021 from cities of Iran. Collected data were analyzed using Colaizzi's seven-step method. Results: Data analysisrevealed that lived experiences of mothers could be divided into five main themes: “mother’s negative and painfulfeelings”, “mother’s concerns about the future of the child”, and “Frustration in the face of negative and maliciousreactions from family and intimate people”, “social stigma”, and “lack of professional and government support”. Discussion: Findings of this study suggest that unawareness and inadequate information about transsexualism andgender change could cause fear, shame, and confusion in mothers with transsexual adult children. Non-governmentalorganizations and support associations in countries that are religiously conservative can serve as centers for informingthe public and increasing their awareness.
The Role of Early Toxic Interaction with Fathers in Males with Bipolar Spectrum Disorder

Purpose: The etiology of bipolar disorder (BD), a most debilitating mental illness worldwide, focuses on childhood traumatic experiences, some concerning parents. This study explored the role of early toxic interaction with fathers in males with BD. Methods: This qualitative study used a descriptive phenomenological approach and purposive sampling in Tehran, Iran, in 2022. The data were generated through 12 semi-structured interviews with males with BD who visited psychiatric centers in Tehran, Iran. The interviews continued until data saturation. The collected data were analyzed using Colaizzi’s seven-step method. Results: The data revealed thirteen subthemes comprising three main themes: the experience of living in constant neglect and rejection, living with fear and abandonment, and reflection of the father’s past interactive patterns in the son’s life. Conclusion: Living in neglect, fear, and abandonment, and repeating past interactive patterns in current life were some of the bitter life experiences of men with BD, who considered the problematic relationship and misbehavior of their fathers to be somewhat effective in the formation of their life problems, but reported that they could not help themselves with personal and social adaptation. Individual and supportive psychotherapies with drug therapy can help the rehabilitation and recovery of these patients.

A facile and simple procedure for the synthesis of novel and known calix[4]resorcinarene derivatives were developed via a reaction of arylaldehydes with resorcinol in the presence of catalytic amounts of tungstate sulfuric acid (TSA) under solvent-free conditions. This eco-friendly method has many appealing attributes, such as excellent yields, short reactions times, use of safe and recoverable catalyst, and simple work-up procedures. TSA was characterized by powdered X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray fluorescence (XRF) and FTIR spectroscopy.

ZnO was incorporated into nano particles of clinoptiloite by ion exchanging the zeolite in a zinc nitrateaqueous solution followed by calcinations process. All raw and modified samples were characterized byXRD, FT-IR, DRS, TG-DTG, SEM, BET and TEM. The prepared catalyst was used in the photocatalyticdegradation of phenylhydrazine (PHZ) and the best experimental parameters were obtained as:0.25 g L-1 of the catalyst, 20 ppm pollutant concentration and pH = 8. The degradation extent wasmonitored by UV–vis spectroscopy and the results were confirmed by HPLC and the chemical oxygendemand (COD).

A new type of cation-exchange nanocomposite membrane was prepared via in-situ formation of FeOOH nanoparticles in a blend containing sulfonated poly (2,6-dimethyl-1,4-phenylene oxide) and sulfonated polyvinylchloride by a simple one-step chemical method. Prepared nanocomposite membranes were characterized using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction. The SEM images showed uniform dispersion of FeOOH nanoparticles throughout the polymeric matrices. The effect of additive loading on physicochemical and electrochemical properties of prepared cation-exchange nanocomposite membranes was studied. Various characterizations showed that the incorporation of different amounts of FeOOH nanoparticles into the basic membrane structure had a significant influence on the membrane performance and could improve the electrochemical properties.

Novel tri- and tetra-substituted pyrimido[4,5-d]pyridazines-2(1H,3H,7H)-ones have been synthesized via the regiospecific condensation reaction of hydrazine derivatives with 5-acetyl-4-aryloyl-6-methyl-3,4-dihydropyrimidinones in the presence of $SiO_2-Y(NO_3)_3$ as a green and recyclable catalyst under solvent-free conditions. All products were obtained in high yields and short reaction time. Employing this method is in accord with green chemistry principles.
Artificial Neural Network for Prediction of Distant Metastasis in Colorectal Cancer

Background and Objectives: Artificial neural networks (ANNs) are flexible and nonlinear models which can be used by clinical oncologists in medical research as decision making tools. This study aimed to predict distant metastasis (DM) of colorectal cancer (CRC) patients using an ANN model. Methods: The data of this study were gathered from 1219 registered CRC patients at the Research Center for Gastroenterology and Liver Disease of Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences, Tehran, Iran (January 2002 and October 2007). For prediction of DM in CRC patients, neural network (NN) and logistic regression (LR) models were used. Then, the concordance index (C index) and the area under receiver operating characteristic curve (AUROC) were used for comparison of neural network and logistic regression models. Data analysis was performed with R 2.14.1 software. Results: The C indices of ANN and LR models for colon cancer data were calculated to be 0.812 and 0.779, respectively. Based on testing dataset, the AUROC for ANN and LR models were 0.82 and 0.77, respectively. This means that the accuracy of ANN prediction was better than for LR prediction. Conclusion: The ANN model is a suitable method for predicting DM and in that case is suggested as a good classifier that usefulness to treatment goals.

Failure analysis of a heat-resistant stainless steel ring in a gas turbine burner

Hot gas path components in gas turbines are damaged by several mechanisms due to aggressive environments. In this research, the cracking of an insert ring, which is composed of Nb-stabilized heat-resistant stainless steel, after 8000 operation hours, is investigated. The microstructure of the ring is examined by optical and scanning electron microscopes equipped with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. The generated stress and strain within the ring during a complete operation cycle (startup to shutdown) of gas turbine are simulated by finite element simulation software. The microstructural investigations indicate the formation of some precipitates that mainly contain nitrogen atoms. The development of tensile loads within the ring during shutdown and brittle N-contained precipitates leads to cracking. The indicators of both types of hot corrosion are also observed.
