MC21/CTF and VERA multiphysics solutions to VERA core physics benchmark progression problems 6 and 7

        Daniel J. Kelly III,Ann E. Kelly,Brian N. Aviles,Andrew T. Godfrey,Robert K. Salko,Benjamin S. Collins 한국원자력학회 2017 Nuclear Engineering and Technology Vol.49 No.6

The continuous energy Monte Carlo neutron transport code, MC21, was coupled to the CTF subchannelthermal-hydraulics code using a combination of Consortium for Advanced Simulation of Light WaterReactors (CASL) tools and in-house Python scripts. An MC21/CTF solution for VERA Core PhysicsBenchmark Progression Problem 6 demonstrated good agreement with MC21/COBRA-IE and VERA solutions. The MC21/CTF solution for VERA Core Physics Benchmark Progression Problem 7, Watts Bar Unit1 at beginning of cycle hot full power equilibrium xenon conditions, is the first published coupled MonteCarlo neutronics/subchannel T-H solution for this problem. MC21/CTF predicted a critical boron concentrationof 854.5 ppm, yielding a critical eigenvalue of 0.99994 ± 6.8E-6 (95% confidence interval). Excellent agreement with a VERA solution of Problem 7 was also demonstrated for integral and localpower and temperature parameters.

Strange Rhetoric, Enigmatical Grammar, Poetic Logic: Wallace Stevens`s The Auroras of Autumn

Vol.61 No.2

The recent turn in Stevens criticism has largely been phenomenological in nature, concerned with moving past the poet’s “failure” to overcome the epistemological problem of the relation of mind and world, imagination and reality, and thereby realize the “supreme fiction.” While many of these critics, who tend to focus on Stevens’s later poetry, have interpreted the effects of grammar or rhetoric in isolation, there has not been a satisfactory account of their complex interplay, which, at heightened junctures, realizes a multidimensional poetic world simultaneously constituted by seeing, interpreting, and feeling. My intervention, then, is pedagogical in inflection. I make the case that Stevens’s efforts in the later poetry to move beyond epistemology can be productively put in relation to the classical liberal arts trivium of grammar, rhetoric, and logic. But pedagogical, too, in the sense that these poems self-consciously teach us to read differently, to be attentive to the richness, vitality, and subtlety of rhetoric and grammar, which, in their active interpenetration, create a poetic logic of their own.one that takes us beyond empirical truth, beyond the types of truths religion has traditionally proffered humankind. In resisting “the intelligence / Almost successfully,” in continually framing and unframing phenomenal reality, the “endlessly elaborating” dance of grammar and rhetoric ultimately discloses the extent to which we share in the making of the logic of the poem.

Enlightening the Other: Colonial Korean Cinema and the Question of Audience

2015 THE REVIEW OF KOREAN STUDIES Vol.18 No.1

The Japanese colonial authorities treated Korean subjects like pupils, and further, like metaphorical children in a number of ways. They attempted to enlighten Korea, and one of the most effective tools of enlightenment for the mostly illiterate colonial population was film. It was a powerful material of propaganda and governing due to its massive popularity since its introduction in the colony. Upon the Korea Film Decree announcement by the Government General in 1940, the colony’s movie theaters became schools that only screened educational films. With this historical context in mind, this essay provides a study of the late-colonial era films released in the 1940-1945 period, including Homeless Angels, Love and Vow, Volunteer, Portrait of Youth, and Suicide Squad at the Watch Tower. My analyses focus on the intertwined issues of colonial enlightenment and propaganda, as well as the issues of ethnography, censorship, and narrative strategies of the films. The films are often packaged as melodrama through a heavy use of music, but this genre façade actually leads to the films’ narrative failure as both melodrama and propaganda. Thus I argue that the Japanese colonial authorities’ attempt at enlightenment via propaganda films ultimately failed. In lieu of a conclusion, this essay ends with a consideration of postcolonial desire for a national cinematic tradition, and the implied ethics of film viewing in postcolonial worlds.

Vol.38 No.7

존 켈리 회장은 7월 12일 경주시 힐튼호텔에서 열린 '원자력 안전 및 해체산업 육성 국제 포럼'에 참석하여 'Perspectives on the Future of Nuclear Power in the United States'를 주제로 특별강연을 했다.

Combined Laminoplasty and Posterior Fusion for Cervical Spondylotic Myelopathy Treatment: A Literature Review

        Kelly J. Bridges,Lauren N. Simpson,Carli L. Bullis,Andy Rekito,Christina M. Sayama,Khoi D. Than 대한척추외과학회 2018 Asian Spine Journal Vol.12 No.3

Study Design: A literature review. Purpose: To explore the utility of laminoplasty in combination with instrumented fusion, with a focus on neurological outcomes and changes in kyphotic deformity. Overview of Literature: Management of cervical spondylotic myelopathy (CSM) to reduce morbidity within the neurosurgical population. Methods: A US National Library of Medicine PubMed search was conducted for manuscripts pertaining to cervical laminoplasty and fusion for the management of CSM. Several relevant studies were shortlisted for review, and the bibliographies of the articles were searched for additional references. The search was limited to human studies, English-language literature, and reports on more than one patient. Results: Combined laminoplasty and fusion was found to provide at least comparable, if not superior, neurological outcomes in specific patient populations with CSM. The Japanese Orthopedic Association scores, local kyphosis, and C2–C7 angle have been reviewed in several manuscripts, and improvement in each of these categories was found with laminoplasty and fusion. Conclusions: The treatment of CSM necessitates an individualized approach based on the pathoanatomical variation. Laminoplasty and fusion can be appropriately used for patients with CSM in a setting of local kyphotic deformity, ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament, associated segmental instability, and the need for strong stabilization.

        Virginia Woolf`s Figures of Loss

Vol.23 No.1

Virginia Woolf’s poetics of loss has long been recognized for its contradictory qualities, which make her elegiac works so singular, vital, and open-ended. Her “fiction-elegies” mourn for losses that are past and those that may come to pass; they register the “blows” of loss, both individual and collective, and aesthetically shape them; they use loss as a creative spur in the effort to overcome it and achieve some sort of wholeness. While this complex “grief work” is self-avowedly inconclusive, the consolations partial and temporary, there are, I contend, important, if equally provisional, triumphs at the level of style, through what I am calling Woolf’s figure-language of loss. Words will never be sufficient to recover what has been lost; however, by marshalling tropes, like metaphor and metonymy, imagery and anthropomorphism, into “companies,” Woolf’s figure-language, in intensified moments, pierces through the “cotton wool” of the “conventions of sorrow” and their prescribed forms and meanings. Throughout her major novels, these singular figure-languages both reopen wounds and feelingly contour our thoughts, such that, figuratively, we share in a more authentic response. Consoling and anti-consolatory, the force of this language lies in its capacity to wound, while provoking us to face loss openly, mindfully, and inventively.
