The Effects of Seasons (Hot/Dry and Cool/Humid) on Thermoregulatory Responses of Male and Female Bali-Cattle Working in the Field

        Kasa, I.W.,Hill, M.K.,Thawites, C.J.,Baillie, N.D. Asian Australasian Association of Animal Productio 1997 Animal Bioscience Vol.10 No.1

A study was conducted on the effects of ploughing on physiological responses of male and female Bali-cattle. A $2{\times}2{\times}6{\times}8$ factorial design (2 seasons, 2 sexes, 6 days and 8 consecutive time of measurements every 30 minutes) was employed. Responses during the cool/humid season were lower than hot/dry; respiration rate (RR) was 52 vs 75/min, rectal temperature(RT) was 39.1 vs $39.5^{\circ}C$ and skin temperature (ST) was 37.1 vs $37.6^{\circ}C$. Within sexes, males were less tolerant than females in that their RR (66 vs 61 breath/min), RT (39.4 vs $39.2^{\circ}C$) and ST (37.6 vs $37.1^{\circ}C$) were each higher than females during work. With increasing time, during the average 2.5 h working period gradual increases in RR, RT and ST were recorded and the overall increases of 84 breath/min, $1.9^{\circ}C$ and $13.8^{\circ}C$ respectively (p < 0.001). Packed cell volume (PCV) data indicated significant difference between sexes, time and season (p < 0.001, p < 0.05 and p < 0.001 respectively). Within time (before and after 2.5 h working) the PCV decreased from 27.4 to 25.6%.

Effects of Nutritional State on Physiological Responses and Heat Production During Exercise of the Animal - a Review

Kasa, I Wayan Asian Australasian Association of Animal Productio 1998 Animal Bioscience Vol.11 No.4

This review was conducted to analyse the effect of nutrition on physiological responses; heat production of domestic animal during exercise. Overall, it can be concluded that the major factors likely to affect heat production in domestic animals during exercise (including work load) are body weight, speed, the gradients attempted, feed intake, ambient conditions (including temperature and solar radiation) and altitude. On nutrition-exercise interactions, for example, it has been concluded that animals on better quality diets produce more heat than those on poorer quality ones, and that glucose as well as acetate are metabolized as energy sources during both rest and exercise.

Sweating Rates and Thermoregulation in Male and Female Bali Cattle

Kasa, I Wayan Asian Australasian Association of Animal Productio 1997 Animal Bioscience Vol.10 No.2

An experiment has been conducted to compare the sweating rate between male and female Bali cattle under tropical conditions in Bali, Indonesia with dry bulb (DB) temperatures varying from 25 to $34.5^{\circ}C$ and relative humidity (RH) 70 to 98%. Rectal temperature (Tr) was significantly different (p < 0.05) between males and females (39.7 vs $39.4^{\circ}C$ compared to 39.2 vs $38.8^{\circ}C$ on weeks 1 and 8 respectively). There were significant effects on RR associated with both $week{\times}sex$ (p < 0.01) and $sex{\times}time$ (p < 0.01) interactions, with values for males higher than females. Skin temperature (Ts) differed significantly between sexes (p <0.05), weeks (p < 0.05) and times (p < 0.01); being lower in females (36 vs $36.4^{\circ}C$). With prolonged working, there were marked increase in RR were recorded after 30 minutes (the overall increase was $12.4^{\circ}C$). Sweating rate (SR) differed significantly between sexes (p < 0.05), weeks (p < 0.01) and times (p < 0.01) during exercise. Females had a lower mean SR ($225.3g/m^2/h$) than males ($238.8g/m^2/h$). With increasing time, the highest SR was achieved after 30 minutes of exercise of $313.3g/m^2/h$.

Effects of Treadmill Exercise on Respiratory Moisture Losses in Goats of Different Breeds

        Kasa, I.W.,Thwaites, C.J.,Hill, M.D.,Baillie, N.D. Asian Australasian Association of Animal Productio 2000 Animal Bioscience Vol.13 No.6

Changes in respiration rate (RR), rectal temperature (RT), respiratory moisture loss (RML), packed cell volume (PCV) and haemoglobin (Hb) were monitored in 2 adults female goats each of the Saanen (S) and Toggenburg (T) breeds during 60 min of exercise (walking at 3 km/h) on a moving-belt treadmill on each of 6 alternate days. A significant $time{\times}breed$ interaction was observed for RR; mean values in Sand T after 60 min of exercise were 130 and 223 /min ($p{\leq}0.01$). The observed time x breed interaction for RT indicated that S was less stressed by exercise than T; mean values after 60 min exercise were 40.4 and $40.8^{\circ}C$ respectively ($p{\leq}0.01$). For RML, the $day{\times}breed$ interaction ($p{\leq}0.001$) indicated that while S had higher values on day 1, thereafter the values for T were higher. The $time{\times}breed$ interaction for RML/breath indicated that values for T declined more rapidly (from 9.4 to 3.1 mgjbreath) than those for S (from 8.3 to 4.1 mgjbreath; ($p{\leq}0.01$). PCV declined during exercise ($p{\leq}0.05$) by 5.5 percentage points. The exercise imposed was stressful in that it led to increases in RR, RT and RML. S was most tolerant of exercise in that it recorded lower values of RT. The fact that the RML/breath was higher during exercies in S apparently allowed it to compensate for a lower RR. Despite higher RR and RML, T also had a higher RT, suggesting either higher muscular heat production during exercise in that breed, or higher sweating losses in S.

Physiological Responses of Saanen, Anglo Nubian and Toggenburg Goats at Different Body Weights and Feed Intake

Wayan Kasa, I Asian Australasian Association of Animal Productio 1998 Animal Bioscience Vol.11 No.3

An experiment has been carried-out on physiological responses in Saanen, Anglo Nubian and Toggenburg goats at different body weights and feed intakes during treadmill exercise at $30{^{\circ}C}$ environmental temperature (ET). The results showed that respiration rate (RR) was significant between time ${\times}$ breed interaction (p < 0.01), with values for the Anglo Nubian being least, while the Saanen was intermediate. With time, RR differed significantly, and after 1 h the respective RR were 238, 221 and 303/min in the Saanen, Anglo Nubian and Toggenburg. With time the rectal temperature (Tr) increased gradually and after 1 h exercise mean values were 40.8, 41.3 and $40.7{^{\circ}C}$ in the Saanen, Anglo Nubian and Toggenburg respectively. Rump skin temperature (RTs) values differed significantly between Anglo Nubians and Toggenburgs, with the differences averaging 0.3, 0.6, 0.4 and $0.4{^{\circ}C}$ after 15, 30, 45 and 60 min exercise respectively. With breed, highest loin skin temperature (LTs) values were in the Anglo Nubian, with an overall mean of $37.9{^{\circ}C}$ (p < 0.05).

      • Maximum Power Point Tracking without Current Sensor for Small Scale Photovoltaic Power system

        Nobuyuki Kasa,Takahiko Iida,Gourab Majumdar 전력전자학회 2001 ICPE(ISPE)논문집 Vol.2001 No.10

This paper presents a maximum power point tracking without a current sensor for a small scale photovoltaic power system. The small scale photovoltaic power systems are used in parallel, and so the cost and the reliability are strongly demanded. In the proposed inverter, the current is controlled with open loop, and then the power of photovoltaic array is calculated by the equation using the voltage of the photovoltaic array. Therefore, the system can obtain the power by detecting only the voltage of the photovoltaic array. As a result, we may obtain the performance of the MPPT with a current sensor as well as with a current sensor.<br/>

Professed vis-à-vis Enacted Knowledge: Topic-Specific Pedagogical Content Knowledge of University Mathematics Teachers

        Yosef Kasa,Solomon Areaya,Mulugeta Woldemichael 대한수학교육학회 2023 수학교육학연구 Vol.33 No.2

This study aimed to determine and observe the topic-specific pedagogical content knowledge of university mathematics teachers before and during limit and continuity concept instruction, and compare the teachers’ perceptions of their teaching to what happened in their classrooms using the case study method. The study involved five university mathematics teachers who teach ‘Applied Mathematics I’ to pre-engineering students at Assosa University, Ethiopia. Classroom observation sessions and pre-lesson teacher interviews were used as data sources. The data were analyzed by identifying common themes in each of the knowledge components prior to and during the lesson, and then by comparing the two phases. The findings from the teacher cases provided detailed contextual information and revealed knowledge manifestations in their lesson design and actual teaching processes. The study’s findings revealed that teachers had a good understanding of topic-specific pedagogical content knowledge components prior to the lesson, but did not demonstrate most of these in their actual teaching of limit and continuity; their reported and enacted knowledge differed. According to this study, individual teachers varied in their implementation of what they had mentioned about various components of topic-specific pedagogical content knowledge. The study proposes that understanding teachers’ knowledge during the lesson design phase and actual teaching could help fill the gap as a means of professional development, and thereby, improve pre-engineering students’ mathematics learning.
