Physical Inactivity, Sedentary Behavior and Chronic Diseases
Karimé González,Jorge Fuentes,José Luis Márquez 대한가정의학회 2017 Korean Journal of Family Medicine Vol.38 No.3
New research into physical activity suggests that it is no longer sufficient just to meet minimum levels recommend-ed by health guidelines in order to reduce cardiovascular risk. Both physical inactivity and sedentary behavior have their own health hazards and need to be addressed separately, in order to explore their different deleterious mech-anisms. The aim of this review was to define and to characterize both concepts, and their relationship with major non-communicable chronic diseases. A PubMed database search was undertaken, using the following key words: physical activity, physical inactivity, sedentarism, sedentary behavior, and non-communicable chronic disease. This literature review provides an updated view on physical inactivity and sedentary behavior, and reevaluates their prevalence and association with major non-communicable chronic disease.

On-pixel amplifiers in amorphous silicon (a-Si) technology can offer increased pixel signal-to-noise ratios (SNR) compared to traditional switch based imaging pixels. Experiments reveal a reduction in readout noise and indicate that a-Si pixel amplifiers can meet the stringent requirements for digital X-ray fluoroscopy. However, larger input voltages can introduce non-linearities thereby reducing the pixel dynamic range. In this research, we investigate amplified pixel architectures that exhibit large signal linearity and consequently higher dynamic range. Gain, linearity, noise, metastability and area estimations of the amplified pixels indicate their applicability in large-area medical Xray imaging applications that require switching between low-exposure, real-time fluoroscopy and high-exposure chest radiography modes at a region of interest.

Karim Ataya,Hussein El Bourji,Ayman Bsat,Amir Al Ayoubi,Al Moutuz Al Jaafreh,George Abi Saad 대한내시경로봇외과학회 2023 Journal of Minimally Invasive Surgery Vol.26 No.4
Purpose: In recent years, the need for revisional bariatric surgery (RBS) procedures has experienced a noteworthy surge to confront complexities and weight recidivism. Despite being a subject of controversy for many, the utilization of the Da Vinci robotic platform (Intuitive Surgical, Inc.) may present benefits in RBS. This study aimed to evaluate the outcomes of robotic RBS in comparison to Laparoscopic RBS. Methods: A meticulous and thorough analysis was ensured through a comprehensive exploration of the literature, which included PubMed, Medline, Scopus, and Cochrane. This exploration was conducted in adherence to the directives outlined in the PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses) guidelines. The Newcastle- Ottawa scale was used for quality assessment. Results: A total of 11 studies were included in this meta-analysis, comprising 55,889 in the laparoscopic group and 5,809 in the robotic group. No significant differences were observed in the leak, bleeding, operative time, or length of stay across both groups. However, the robotic group showed higher rates of conversion to open surgery (odds ratio [OR], 0.65; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.53–0.79; p < 0.0001; I2 = 0%), reoperation (OR, 0.70; 95% CI, 0.57– 0.87; p = 0.0009; I2 = 6%), and readmission (higher rate of readmission in the robotic group; OR, 0.76; 95% CI, 0.62–0.92; p = 0.005; I2 = 30%) Conclusion: Robotic-assisted bariatric surgery has no significant advantage over conventional laparoscopic surgery. Further research is warranted to explore and evaluate surgeons’ methodology and proficiency differences.

( Karim Hedayatian ),( Saeed Yarmahmoodi ) 호남수학회 2016 호남수학학술지 Vol.38 No.2
In this paper, we show that for every N 2 N, isometric N-Jordan operators on Hilbert spaces are power regular. More- over, the only normaloid or 2-isometric, N-Jordan operators are isometries.
Dynamic analysis of a historical monument: retrofit using shape memory alloy wires
Karim Hamdaoui,Zahira Benadla 국제구조공학회 2014 Smart Structures and Systems, An International Jou Vol.13 No.3
The effectiveness of using the advanced seismic protection technology based on shape memoryalloy (SMA) dampers to preserve a historical minaret is investigated. The proposed studied case, the minaretof Mansourah, is a seven century old minaret located in Tlemcen, Algeria. Its original height was of 47m,while nowadays, the monument is half destructed and its current height reaches the 40m. The proposedseismic retrofit is based on the technique that utilizes SMA wires as dampers for the upper flexible part ofthe minaret. The effectiveness of the proposed technique is numerically evaluated via non-linear finiteelement analysis using the structural software ANSYS. The effectiveness of the proposed device inmitigating the seismic hazard is demonstrated by the effective reduction in its dynamic response.
Oral Contraceptives, Abortion and Breast Cancer Risk: a Case Control Study in Saudi Arabia
Karim, Syed Mustafa,Baeshen, Wijdan,Neamatullah, Syed Nehal,Bin, Bakr Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2015 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.16 No.9
Background: Several studies have examined the relationship between oral contraceptive pill (OCP) use, abortions and breast cancer, with mixed results. Hormonal changes associated with OCP use and abortion may increase risk of breast cancer over time, but there is a lack of studies studying this association in Saudi Arabian women. Materials and Methods: We thererfore conducted a case control study in 192 women (92 as cases and 100 as controls), aged 30 to 65, and collected information on variables including examples related to study objectives and those which may confound findings. The Chi square test was used to detect associations between various factors and risk of breast cancer. Results: We found no evidence of interaction between history of abortion or frequency of abortion and breast cancer risk (Chi square=0.422, p =0.420 and 1, p =0.169) respectively. Oral contraceptives did not confer risk for breast cancer overall (OR=0.276, 95%CI 0.092-0.829, p=0.524), while long term use of OCP was associated with increased risk of breast cancer (OR=0.297, 95%CI 0.158-0.557, p=0.001), with higher association for those who used 10 years or more of OCPs (OR=0.282, 95%CI 0.095-0.835, p=0.02). Age at first use of OCPs had no effect on breast cancer risk (p=0.452) or age at diagnosis (p=0.074). Conclusions: Prolonged use of OC (more than 10 years) may be associated with increased risk of breast cancer in Saudi women. Larger population based studies are needed to confirm this finding in this population.
Karim Ebrahim,Farshad H. Shirazi,Hosein Vatanpour,Abas zare,Farzad Kobarfard,Hadi Rabie 한국유방암학회 2014 Journal of breast cancer Vol.17 No.4
Purpose: Breast cancer is a significant health problem worldwide, accounting for a quarter of all cancer diagnoses in women. Current strategies for breast cancer treatment are not fully effective, and there is substantial interest in the identification of novelanticancer agents especially from natural products includingtoxins. Cytotoxins are polypeptides found in the venom of cobrasand have various physiological effects. In the present study, the anticancer potential of cytotoxin-II against the human breastadenocarcinoma cell line (MCF-7) was investigated. Methods:The cytotoxic effects of cytotoxin-II were determined by morphologicalanalysis and 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazoliumbromide assay. The mode and mechanism of celldeath were investigated via acridine orange/ethidium bromide(AO/EtBr) double staining, flow cytometric analysis of cell death, detection of mitochondrial membrane potential, measurement ofintracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS), annexin V/propidiumiodide staining, and caspase-9 activity assays. Results: The halfmaximal inhibitory concentration (IC50) of cytotoxin-II in MCF-7cells was 4.18±1.23 μg/mL, while the value for cisplatin was approximately28.02±1.87 μg/mL. Morphological analysis and AO/EtBr double staining showed typical manifestations of apoptoticcell death (in doses lower than 8 μg/mL). Dose- and time-dependentROS generation, loss of mitochondrial membrane potential,caspase-9 activation, and cell cycle arrest were observed in theirrespective tests. Conclusion: In conclusion, cytotoxin-II has potentanticancer effects in the MCF-7 cell line, which are inducedvia the intrinsic pathways of apoptosis. Based on these findings,cytotoxin-II is a suitable choice for breast cancer treatment.

The growth rate, feed conversion efficiency and carcass characteristics of nine native Malpura (M) and eight Awassi ${\times}$ Malpura half bred (AM) male lambs were compared under intensive feeding on 60:40 concentrate and roughage based composite feed. Weaning body weight was similar in the two genetic groups while finishing body weight, total body weight gain and average daily gain during the experiment were higher (p<0.01) in AM than M lambs. The feed conversion efficiency was lower in M than AM lambs with 15.7 and 19.8 per cent feed conversion efficiency, respectively, in the two genetic groups. The dressing yield in terms of preslaughter weight or empty live weight was however similar in the two genetic groups. The loin eye area was also greater (p<0.01) in AM than M lambs. The cutability was similar for the two groups amounting to 33.2, 13.3, 13.2, 23.3 and 16.6% of half carcass, respectively, for leg, loin, rack, neck and shoulder and breast and foreshank. On an average the separable lean, fat and KOH bone content of the half carcass were 48.3, 16.8 and 23.3% for native M and 54.1, 15.0 and 19.0% for AM lambs, respectively. It is concluded that growth rate and feed conversion efficiency were better in Awassi ${\times}$ Malpura half bred than native Malpura lambs while dressing yield and cutability of standard cuts were similar in the two genetic groups.
