Readout electronics for the scintillation bar tracking detector (SciBar) in the K2K neutrino oscillation experiment has been developed. SciBar has 14 336 scintillator bars in total. The deposited energy and timing of particles from neutrino interactions in the scintillator bars are measured by 64-channel multianode photo-multiplier tubes (MAPMTs). Compact custom-designed electronics to record the MAPMT signals were developed, consisting of front-end circuit boards attached to each MAPMT and back-end electronics modules sitting in a VME crate. The front-end circuit board multiplexes pulse-height information from all 64 anodes and generates a fast triggering signal. Two sets of ASICs (IDEAS VA32HDR11 and TA32CG) are employed for these functions. The bias voltages and relay of control signals are also handled on the board. The back-end electronics module controls the front-end board by providing the control, timing, and low-voltage signals. The board also digitizes the multiplexed signal from the front-end. The electronics achieves low noise of less than 0.3 photo-electrons and good linearity up to 300 (150) photo-electrons for MAPMTs at the gain of 5×105 (106).

The level structure of 172Dy has been investigated for the first time by means of decay spectroscopy following in-flight fission of a 238U beam. A long-lived isomeric state with T½=0.71(5) s and Kπ=8- has been identified at 1278 keV, which decays to the ground-state and γ-vibrational bands through hindered electromagnetic transitions, as well as to the daughter nucleus 172Ho via allowed β decays. The robust nature of the Kπ=8- isomer and the ground-state rotational band reveals an axially-symmetric structure for this nucleus. Meanwhile, the γ-vibrational levels have been identified at unusually low excitation energy compared to the neighboring well-deformed nuclei, indicating the significance of the microscopic effect on the non-axial collectivity in this doubly mid-shell region. The underlying mechanism of enhanced γ vibration is discussed in comparison with the deformed Quasiparticle Random-Phase Approximation based on a Skyrme energy-density functional.

We have carried out dierential scanning calorimeter (DSC) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements in order to investigate the change in the molecular dynamics accompaning by the phase transition at Tc = 343 K. We found that drastic decrease in the line width of the 1H-NMR absorption line was observed at Tc. Moreover, a decrease in the 1H spin-lattice relaxation time that accompanied the phase transition at 343 K was also observed. These results indicate that a re-orientational motion of the (C4H5N2)+ ion appears above Tc. In addition, an anomalously large thermal anomaly (10.6 kJ/mol) was observed at Tc. From these results, we deduced that the phase transition at 343 K was caused by the appearance of a re-orientational motion of the (C4H5N2)+ ion.

Inclusive-jet and dijet differential cross sections have been measured in neutral current deep inelastic ep scattering for exchanged boson virtualities Q2>125 GeV2 with the ZEUS detector at HERA using an integrated luminosity of 82 pb-1. Jets were identified in the Breit frame using the kT cluster algorithm. Jet cross sections are presented as functions of several kinematic and jet variables. The results are also presented in different regions of Q2. Next-to-leading-order QCD calculations describe the measurements well. Regions of phase space where the theoretical uncertainties are small have been identified. Measurements in these regions have the potential to constrain the gluon density in the proton when used as inputs to global fits of the proton parton distribution functions.

ZEUS Collaboration,Chekanov, S.,Derrick, M.,Magill, S.,Musgrave, B.,Nicholass, D.,Repond, J.,Yoshida, R.,Mattingly, M.C.K.,Jechow, M.,Pavel, N.,Yagues Molina, A.G.,Antonelli, S.,Antonioli, P.,Bari, G. North Holland 2007 Nuclear Physics, Section B Vol.786 No.1
Inclusive dijet and trijet production in deep inelastic ep scattering has been measured for 10<Q2<100 GeV2 and low Bjorken x, 10-4<xBj<10-2. The data were taken at the HERA ep collider with centre-of-mass energy s=318 GeV using the ZEUS detector and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 82 pb-1. Jets were identified in the hadronic centre-of-mass (HCM) frame using the kT cluster algorithm in the longitudinally invariant inclusive mode. Measurements of dijet and trijet differential cross sections are presented as functions of Q2, xBj, jet transverse energy, and jet pseudorapidity. As a further examination of low-xBj dynamics, multi-differential cross sections as functions of the jet correlations in transverse momenta, azimuthal angles, and pseudorapidity are also presented. Calculations at O(αs3) generally describe the trijet data well and improve the description of the dijet data compared to the calculation at O(αs2).

Bovine blastocysts were obtained by totally in-vitro technique and then transferred to recipient cows. Total of 15 calves (including 4 premature calves) were obtained from 11 recipients. Four calves were obtained from the transfers of fresh blastocysts and 9 calves were obtained from the transfers of frozen-thawed blastocysts. Two calves were obtained from the bisected fresh blastocyst. The males and 5 females were delivered. Birth weight of calves was within normal range except one female, and all calves appeared to be completely normal.
