Efficiency Measures for Spanish Retailing Firms in a Regulated Market
Justo de Jorge,CRISTINA SUÁREZ 중앙대학교 경제연구소 2007 Journal of Economic Development Vol.32 No.1
The objective of this work is to analyze the impact on Spanish retail firms’ efficiency of the regulatory process experienced in the period 1996-2002. The intangible nature of services makes them more difficult to quantify, so we combine work measurements with the methodology of the stochastic frontier production function for unbalanced panel data, and for which the firm effects are an exponential function of time. Furthermore, we obtain other relevant technological measurements of these productive processes such as the scale and the technical progress parameters. Our econometric results show great heterogeneity in the firms’ efficiency but without change over the period and the predominance of decreasing returns to scale. They also indicate that technological progress was produced.

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>This paper presents an over-review of various strategies applied to enhance the fault ride-through (FRT) capability of the doubly-fed induction generators (DFIGs) based wind turbines (WTs) during transient-state. As the DFIG based WT system is sensitive to any grid disturbance, various FRT techniques based on: (i) installation of additional protection circuits, (ii) installation of reactive power injecting-devices and (iii) specific control approaches/structures have been proposed in the literature. Usually, the protection circuits or control structures are applied to limit the generated rotor over-current and undesirable dc-link over-voltage during grid disturbance. Meanwhile, the reactive power injecting-devices surpass any deficiency of the reactive power so as to improve the transient performance of the DFIG based WT and automatically bound the rotor current and the dc-link voltage. Actually, many research findings demonstrate an efficient protection of the DFIG without jeopardizing its operating strategy during transient-state. Therefore, this study focuses on emphasizing the present status of the rotor over-current and dc-link over-voltage protection solutions e.g. the crowbar and its related protection circuits, the reactive power injecting-devices such as the static synchronous compensators (STATCOM) and dynamic voltage restorer (DVR). Moreover, some control (modified) approaches/structures for limiting the inrush rotor currents which are based on linear and nonlinear control strategies are presented. Following the description of the overall system characteristics under steady-state and transient-state in the <I>d–q</I> axis, various protection strategies are extensively discussed to reveal their role to improve the FRT. Then, typical case studies are presented to demonstrate and support the reviewed FRT schemes. In that case, using the simulation results from the MATLAB/Simulink software the effectiveness of each case study during network faults are analyzed and compared.</P>
EFFECTS OF PUBLIC CAPITAL ON ECONOMIC GROWTH AND PRODUCTIVITY IN SPAIN DURING THE PERIOD 1980-2007
JUSTO DE JORGE MORENO,CESAR CAMISON ZORZONA,JUAN MURO ROMERO,LEOPOLDO LABORDA CASTILLO 중앙대학교 경제연구소 2015 Journal of Economic Development Vol.40 No.4
In line with the existing literature, the main aim of this study is to analyse the effects of public capital on growth in the Spanish regions for the period 1980-2007. The methodology used adopts a parametric approach following the recommendations intended to eliminate the effects of demand and estimate only the medium-term impacts, ultimately eliminating any possible inverse causality relationship. The estimates made put the elasticity of the productivity of labour with respect to the delays in investment in infrastructures at 0.183, while elasticity with respect to private investment stands at 0.294. This means it can be concluded that investment in public capital contributes to increasing productivity by approximately 62 per cent in the Spanish regions as a whole. Meanwhile, the analysis of the convergence of the estimated efficiency levels shows that the least efficient regions have benefited from the technology existing in the regions closest to the efficiency frontier. Finally, some reflections are compiled on the role investment in public capital can play in the context of a crisis like the current one, together with other pillars incorporated into the debate, such as fiscal consolidation and structural reforms.

This paper analyses the performance levels of the leading compa- nies in the fast fashion sector, Inditex, H&M and Gap in the period 2005–2019. Additionally, the isolated analysis of Inditex, as a case study, has been considered, with special emphasis on its interna- tionalization process, in the period 1995–2019. The use of different approaches to obtain efficiency and productivity (DEA, intertem- poral and Windows models), have enriched this work. The results obtained indicate a good performance in the resource manage- ment of the companies analyzed. In the case of Inditex, a curvilinear U-shaped relationship was found between efficiency and its level of internationalization. In addition, average increases in TFP are observed in the case of Gap and Inditex. However, Inditex shows a trend of continuous improvement in most of the sub-periods considered, reaching an improvement of 18%.

Background and Purpose Undiagnosed atrial fibrillation (AF) is a major risk factor for stroke that can go unnoticed in individuals with embolic stroke of undetermined source (ESUS) or cryptogenic stroke (CS). Early detection is critical for stroke prognosis and secondary prevention. This study aimed to determine if blood biomarkers of myocardial stress can accurately predict AF in patients with ESUS/CS, which would allow the identification of those who would benefit from closer monitoring. Methods In February 2023 we performed a systematic date-unrestricted search of three databases for studies on patients with ESUS/CS who were subsequently diagnosed with AF. We examined the relationships between AF and serum myocardial stress markers such as brain natriuretic peptide (BNP), N-terminal-pro-BNP (NT-proBNP), midregional proatrial natriuretic peptide, and troponin. Results Among the 1,527 studies reviewed, 23 eligible studies involving 6,212 participants, including 864 with AF, were analyzed. A meta-analysis of 9 studies indicated that they demonstrated a clear association between higher NT-proBNP levels and an increased risk of AF, with adjusted and raw data indicating 3.06- and 9.03-fold higher AF risks, respectively. Lower NT-proBNP levels had a pooled negative predictive value of 91.7%, indicating the potential to rule out AF with an 8% false-negative rate. Conclusions Further research is required to fully determine the potential of biomarkers for AF detection after stroke, as results from previous studies lack homogeneity. However, lower NTproBNP levels have potential in ruling out AF in patients with ESUS/CS. Combining them with other relevant biomarkers may enhance the precision of identifying patients who will not benefit from extended monitoring, which would optimize resource allocation and patient care.

Pulses should be part of a healthy diet, and it is also becoming clear that they have health-promoting effects. Nevertheless, most studies on the bioactive or health-promoting properties of pulses have been carried out using soybeans. We have studied cell growth-regulating properties, which may be responsible for anti-cancer properties, in chickpea seeds. Chickpea seeds are a staple in the traditional diet of many Mediterranean, Asian, and South and Central American countries. In addition, chickpea seeds have industrial applications since they can be used for the preparation of protein concentrates and isolates. The cell lines Caco-2 (epithelial intestinal) and J774 (macrophages) have been exposed to chickpea seed extracts and protein preparations in order to screen the different chickpea fractions for effects on cell growth. Both cell growth-promoting and cell growth-inhibiting effects were found. Most interestingly, a fraction soluble in ethanol and acetone specifically and almost completely inhibited the growth of Caco-2 cells exhibiting a cancerous phenotype. It is concluded that chickpea seeds are a source of bioactive components and deserve further study for their possible anti-cancer effect.
