Steamed Ginseng Berry Powder Ameliorates Skeletal Muscle Atrophy via Myogenic Effects
Kim Jungbum,Choi Hui Ji,Seo Donghyuk,Lee Sang-Ah,Heo Jong Beom,Baek Dong Hyuk,Lee Wonhwa,Song Gyu Yong 한국미생물·생명공학회 2024 Journal of microbiology and biotechnology Vol.34 No.1
Sarcopenia is an age-related loss of muscle mass and function for which there is no approved pharmacological treatment. We tested direct efficacy by evaluating grip strength improvement in a sarcopenia mouse model rather than drug screening, which inhibits specific molecular mechanisms. Various physiological functions of ginseng berries are beneficial to the human body. The present study aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of steamed ginseng berry powder (SGBP). SGBP administration increased myotube diameter and suppressed the mRNA expression of sarcopeniainducing molecules. SGBP also reduced the levels of inflammatory transcription factors and cytokines that are known to induce sarcopenia. Oral administration of SGBP improved muscle mass and physical performance in a mouse model of sarcopenia. In summary, our data suggest that SGBP is a novel therapeutic candidate for the amelioration of muscle weakness, including sarcopenia.
Antiferromagnetic coupling of van der Waals ferromagnetic Fe3GeTe2

<P>Among two-dimensional (2D) layered van der Waals materials, ferromagnetic 2D materials can be useful for compact low-power spintronic applications. One promising candidate material is Fe3GeTe2 (FGT), which has a strong perpendicular magnetic anisotropy and relatively high Curie temperature. In this study, we confirmed that an oxide layer (O-FGT) naturally forms on top of exfoliated FGT and that an antiferromagnetic coupling (AFC) exists between FGT and O-FGT layers. From a first-principles calculation, oxide formation at the interface of each layer induces an AFC between the layers. An AFC causes a tailed hysteresis loop, where two-magnetization reversal curves are included, and a negative remanence magnetization at a certain temperature range.</P>
A Review of Korean Mental Health Studies Related to Trauma and Disasters
JungBum Kim,SeolYoung Ryu,Hyunnie Ahn 대한신경정신의학회 2005 PSYCHIATRY INVESTIGATION Vol.2 No.2
This article reviews the findings from the studies on disasters and Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) conducted during the last decade in Korea. Forty-five studies directly related to the psychological impact and stress from various types of disasters were selected through a literature search. We present prevalence/ incidence, risk factors and other variables related to disasters, the treatments, and case reports. Most of the studies have not yet systematically examined different types of disaster and trauma, and have strong methodological weaknesses. It is suggested that further systematic studies are greatly needed to understand the comprehensive aspect of disaster and PTSD, especially focusing on the epidemiology, child and adolescent victims, biological aspects, pharmacotherapy, and psychological treatments.
Generation of Model Diesel Particles by Spark Discharge and Hydrocarbon Condensation
Hakjoon Kim,Jinho Kim,Youngjoo Choi,Hyenchul Oh,Jungbum Chu,Sangsoo Kim 대한기계학회 2006 JOURNAL OF MECHANICAL SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY Vol.20 No.11
This study was conducted in order to generate model particles which were similar to particles in diesel emission. Spark discharge was used for carbon agglomerates and hydrocarbon condensation for particles that consist of carbon agglomerates and hydrocarbon. The size of the carbon agglomerates, whose mean size were 30 and 70 ㎚, ranged between 15 and 200 ㎚, and the total number concentration of the particles ranged from 3 to 5 × 10?#/㎤ as the controllable variables in spark discharge generator changed. The result of the hydrocarbon condensation experiment showed that the final sizes of the particles enlarged by condensation did not depend on the initial sizes, but the maximum condensational growth of carbon agglomerates by dodecane (C₁₂ H₂?) condensation was 112 times the initial size of 40 ㎚, while the size of the agglomerates by benzene (C?H?) was 3.25 times its initial size.
