PURPOSE:: To analyze the changes in subfoveal choroidal thickness (SFChT) before and after resolution of central serous chorioretinopathy (CSC) and their association with recurrence during follow-up. METHODS:: Seventy-six eyes with CSC that were completely resolved after treatment with either intravitreal bevacizumab (IVB, 42 eyes) or with half-fluence photodynamic therapy (34 eyes) were included. Best-corrected visual acuity and spectral domain optical coherence tomography were performed at baseline, after complete resolution, and at regular intervals thereafter. RESULTS:: Subfoveal choroidal thickness was similar in the IVB-treated and half-fluence photodynamic therapy–treated eyes at baseline, as well as after complete resolution of the CSC. However, recurrence was more frequent in the IVB-treated eyes (19.0% vs. 2.9%, P = 0.037). The reduction of SFChT after CSC resolution was greater in the nonrecurrent eyes than in the recurrent eyes (91.35 ± 46.40 vs. 19.25 ± 16.47 μm, P < 0.001), and the extent of SFChT reduction was associated with the rate of recurrence of CSC (odds ratio = 0.877, P = 0.019). When CSC recurred, SFChT increased toward the baseline value. CONCLUSION:: Treatment of idiopathic CSC by both IVB and half-fluence photodynamic therapy can reduce SFChT when subretinal fluid is completely resolved. Recurrence is more frequent after IVB and specifically in eyes with a smaller reduction in SFChT after resolution of the CSC.

The effect of metal particles on the photoluminescence (PL) and the Raman spectra of functionalized SWCNTs in aqueous solutions was systematically investigated by studying three different metal particles (gold, cobalt, and nickel) on three different SWCNT suspensions (DNA-, RNA-, and sodium deoxycholate salt (DOC)-functionalized SWCNTs). Substantial enhancement of the PL intensities was observed, while the Raman spectra remained unchanged, after gold, cobalt, or nickel particles were introduced into RNA-SWCNT aqueous suspensions. Almost the same results were obtained after the same metal particles were added to DNA-SWCNT aqueous suspensions. However, both the PL and the Raman spectra did not exhibit any change at all after the same metal particles were introduced into DOC-SWCNT aqueous suspensions. The unusual PL enhancements observed in this work cannot be accounted for by the three well-known mechanisms in the literature: surface-enhanced Raman scattering effect, Förster resonance energy transfer in a rebundling of isolated SWCNTs, and pH changes of the aqueous solutions.

Sialadenoma papilliferum (SP) is a rare benign neoplasm that normally arises from the minor salivary glands, particularly in the palate. SP is normally encountered in older men with an exophytic papillary surface growth. In the present study, an SP of the hard palate of a 69-year-old woman was examined immunohistochemically. Myoepithelial cell markers, such as S-100, smooth muscle actin and vimentin, were observed in the basal or luminal layer of tumor cells, indicating that myoepithelial cells participate in the pathogenesis of SP. In addition, cytokeratin 7 was also strongly detected in the tumor cells, suggesting that excretory ductal epithelial cells have a role in its histogenesis. A review of the literature of immunohistochemical studies on SP showed that the expression and co-expression of cytokeratins and myoepithelial cell markers have been reported in tumor cells. These results suggested that excretory duct cells and myoepithelial cells participate in the pathogenesis of SP.

In 2017, two new tomato mosaic virus (ToMV) isolates were collected from greenhouses in Buyeo, Chungcheongnam- do, South Korea. Full-length cDNAs of the new ToMV isolates were cloned into dual cauliflower mosaic virus 35S and T7 promoter-driven vectors, sequenced and their pathogenicities investigated. The nucleotide sequences of isolates GW1 (MH507165) and GW2 (MH507166) were 99% identical, resulting in only two amino acid differences in nonconserved region II and the helicase domain, Ile668Thr and Val834Ile. The two isolates were most closely related to a ToMV isolate from Taiwan (KJ207374). Isolate GW1 (Ile668, Val834) induced a systemic hypersensitive response in Nicotiana benthamiana compared with the isolate GW2, which a single residue substitution showed was due to Val834.

Conclusion: The overall visual prognosis and the clinical features of CMV retinitis do not differ between HIV and non-HIV patients. The visual prognosis of CMV retinitis still remains quite poor despite advancements in antiviral treatment. This poor prognosis after antiviral treatment is associated with retinal detachment during follow-up, Zone 1 involvement, and the poor general condition of the patient.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the incidence of and risk factors for the developmentof diabetic retinopathy (DR) and progression to proliferative DR (PDR) in Korean patients. Patients diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and followed for more than 5 years at a universitybasedclinic since 2000 were consecutively enrolled in this retrospective cohort study. Basedon the DR classification at the initial and final visits, the incidence and progression of DRwas determined and patient characteristics were compared according to DR progression. Hazard ratios of each putative risk factor for DR progression were calculated with amultivariate Cox proportional hazard model. Rate of DR development and progression toPDR were 32.1/1,000 and 26.2/1,000 person-years, respectively. A longer duration ofdiabetes and higher mean HbA1c level were significant risk factors for the development ofDR. Regarding progression to PDR, higher mean HbA1c level, higher standard deviation ofHbA1c, and higher urine albumin-to-creatinine ratio were significant risk factors. The ratesof development of DR and progression to PDR in Koreans with type 2 diabetes are lowerthan those reported over the last decade. An inadequate blood glycemic control is thecommon risk factor for development and progression of DR.
