Aims: Liver cirrhosis is known to decrease the cardiac performance. However, it is unclear whether this change is related to the change in myocardial muscle itself, or is a secondary functional phenomenon. In this study, we aimed to characterize myocardial tissue using cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) imaging in cirrhotic patients. Methods: Thirty-five patients with cirrhosis who were listed for liver transplantation and 20 normal healthy controls were prospectively enrolled. All included subjects underwent conventional echocardiography, speckle-tracking echocardiography, and CMR imaging with T1 mapping and late gadolinium enhancement. Native T1 and extracellular volume (ECV) were measured for assessing myocardial fibrosis. Echocardiography and CMR imaging were performed at just before and 1 year after liver transplantation. Results: Both echocardiography and CMR imaging demonstrated hyperdynamic left ventricular (LV) function in cirrhotic patients. There were no significant differences in LV size, LV wall thickness, LV mass index, E/A ratio, and deceleration time between cirrhotic patients and non-cirrhotic healthy controls (all P>0.1). However, cirrhotic patients showed significantly higher values of native T1 (1230.1±79.0 vs 1173.3±34.7, P=0.001) (Table 1 and Figure 1A) and ECV (31.4±4.9 vs 25.4±1.9, P<0.001) (Table 1 and Figure 1B) compared to non-cirrhotic controls. Specifically, ECV had a significant correlation with Child-Pugh class (26.2±3.4 in Child class A or B vs 33.2±4.3 in Child class C; P=0.001). At 1 year after liver transplantation, native T1 (from 1224.0±55.7 to 1155.8±77.0, P=0.010) and ECV (from 30.9±3.6 to 25.2±2.6, P<0.001) values significantly decreased, but there was no difference in other parameters regarding LV function and LV size. Conclusions: Decreased cardiac performance in cirrhotic patients may result from myocardial change reflected by the increase in native T1 and ECV values, which was normalized after liver transplantation. Native T1 and ECV values of CMR imaging could be more straightforward diagnostic indices for cirrhotic cardiomyopathy.

The purpose of this study was to investigate if an community forestry programme (HKm) could be one of the main tool for REDD+ in Indonesia. Recently, considerable numbers of countries including Norway, England, Korea and etc. have invested 69 million US$ in total to Indonesia for implementation of REDD+. However, forest dependent people without a communal right are subject to poor forest governance during a stream of REDD+ in Indonesia. This study suggest that HKm are needed to be a tool for REDD+ in order to achieve the objects of REDD+ in terms of Equity, Efficiency, and Effectiveness (3Es) by stimulating local and Indigenous peoples to participate in REDD+. As a result of our study, Indonesia government have designated only 200,000 ha for HKm area by 2007. Indonesia government have a week political will to extend its area to give a communal right to those peoples who dwell in state forests and HKm application process is complicated and slow. HKm has a potential to be main tool for REDD+ in Indonesia. However HKm will be difficult to be main tool for REDD+ without resolving current obstacles.

Official Development Assistance(ODA) in forestry sector has been implemented for about 60 years after the second world war. Forestry aid is getting important due to its role to play as a practical methodology of Millenium Development Goals(MDGs). Korea has conducted ODA in forestry in 22 developing countries since 2005. However its contents are mostly focused on environment conservation by plantation. In the other hands, the other donor countries try to eradicate poverty of people who are dependent on forestry, environment conservation and etc in MDGs by means of ODA in forestry. Swiss, Germany, Japan, UK, and the other donor counties found out without taking account of forest dependent people who are supposed to manage 22% of developing countries"s forest, forestry aid could not be successful. The direction of Korean ODA in forestry need to change in order to meet the current movement of International ODA. For this, Korea should develop various contents of forestry aids like CF (Community Forestry) project which the donor countries with long history of forestry aids have implemented in many ways.

Aims: Currently, HBsAg-seroclearance is considered as a functional cure in chronic hepatitis B patients, although it is rarely achievable with oral nucleos(t)ide analogs (NAs) treatment alone. We conducted a randomized controlled trial to evaluate the efficacy on HBsAg-seroclearance and safety of pegylated interferon alfa-2a (Peg-IFN) plus sequential hepatitis B virus (HBV) vaccination in addition to NA treatment. Methods: A total of 111 patients who achieved serum HBV DNA < 20 IU/mL and quantitated HBsAg (qHBsAg) < 3,000 IU/ mL with entecavir (ETV) treatment were enrolled and randomly assigned to the treatment group (ETV + PegIFN [subcutaneous injection of 180 μg every week over 48 weeks] + sequential HBV vaccination [intramuscular injection of recombinant HBV vaccine containing 20 μg of HBsAg, at weeks 48, 52 and 56], N=37), the control group (ETV only, N=37), or the explorative group (ETV + Peg-IFN + concurrent HBV vaccination [at weeks 0, 4, and 8], N=37). The primary endpoint was HBsAg-seroclearance at week 100 and secondary endpoints included change in qHBsAg titer and safety Results: There was no difference in baseline characteristics including qHBsAg, HBV DNA, HBeAg-positivity, and biochemical markers (e.g., ALT, AST, albumin) among three groups. In intention-to-treat analysis, the treatment group showed significantly higher chance of HBsAg-seroclearance at week 100 (16.2% vs 0%, P=0.025 by Fisher’s exact test). However, the explorative group (5.4%) failed to reach significant difference (P=0.49). The changes in median qHBsAg titer from baseline to week 100 was -67.7% in the treatment group and -36.3% in the control group, respectively. Maximal decrease in qHBsAg of each patients are plotted in Figure 1. Adverse events were significantly more frequent in the treatment group (81.1%) than the control group (2.7%) (P<0.0001). However, the frequency of serious adverse events did not differ significantly among groups (2.7% in both treatment and control group, P=1.00). Conclusions: Entecavir plus an additional PegIFN treatment followed by sequential HBV vaccination with intensified schedule significantly increases the chance of HBsAg-seroclearance compared to entecavir alone. <P>This paper presents the quench initiation and propagation characteristics of no-insulation racetrack coils wound using three types of Cu-stabilized CdBCO coated conductors (CCs), with SUS and brass laminations, and without lamination. The test results show that the minimum quench energy values of the brass-laminated CdBCO CC coil were larger than those of the SUS-laminated one. Moreover, the normal zone propagation velocities of the brass-laminated GdBCO CC coil were greater than those of the SUS-laminated one due to the higher thermal conductivity of brass. Moreover, the nonlaminated CdBCO CC coil exhibited greatly improved thermal stability compared to the brass/SUS-laminated GdBCO CC coils, because the local heat in the event of quenching was easily dissipated due to the absence of lamination.</P>

<P>The stress produced by the coupling of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and endoplasmic reticulum (ER) has been explored extensively, but little is known regarding their roles in the early development of mammalian embryos. Here, we demonstrated that the early development of in vitro-produced (IVP) bovine embryos was governed by the cooperative action between ROS and ER stress. Compared with the tension produced by 5% O2, 20% O2 significantly decreased the blastocyst formation rate and cell survival, which was accompanied by increases in ROS and in levels of sXBP-1 transcript, which is an ER stress indicator. In addition, treatment with glutathione (GSH), a ROS scavenger, decreased ROS levels, which resulted in increased blastocyst formation and cell survival rates. Importantly, levels of sXBP-1 and ER stress-associated transcripts were reduced by GSH treatment in developing bovine embryos. Consistent with this observation, tauroursodeoxycholate (TUDCA), an ER stress inhibitor, improved blastocyst developmental rate, trophectoderm proportion, and cell survival. Moreover, ROS and sXBP-1 transcript levels were markedly decreased by supplementation with TUDCA, suggesting a possible mechanism governing the mutual regulation between ROS and ER stress. Interestingly, knockdown of XBP-1 transcripts resulted in both elevation of ROS and decrease of antioxidant transcripts, which ultimately reduced in vitro developmental competence of bovine embryos. Based on these results, in vitro developmental competence of IVP bovine embryos was highly dependent on the coupled response between oxidative and ER stresses. These results increase our understanding of the mechanism(s) governing early embryonic development and may improve strategies for the generation of IVP embryos with high developmental competence.</P>

Influences of carbonaceous ingredient as a solid lubricant in automotive friction materials on friction properties were studied. Three types of carbonaceous ingredients such as natural graphite, artificial graphite, and cokes were mixed using a constrained mixture design. A 1/5 scale brake dynamometer was used to obtain tribological properties. Results showed that cokes substantially increased the friction coefficient, and natural graphite effectively reduced stick-slip phenomena. This significant difference was attributed to the formation of the friction film on the brake pad which was shown to be strongly dependent on the graphite types. The different crystal structures of the carbonaceous solid lubricants played a significant role in the formation of friction film at the interface.

The telecommunications market is expanding rapidly and becoming more substitutive. In this environment, demand forecasting is very difficult, yet important for both practitioners and researchers. In this paper, we adopt the modeling approach proposed by Jun and Park [6]. The basic premise is that demand patterns result from choice behavior, where customers choose a product to maximize their utility. We apply a choice-based substitutive diffusion model to the Korean mobile telecommunication service market where digital service has completely replaced analog service. In comparison with Bass-type multigeneration models, our model provides superior fitting and forecasting performance. The choice-based model is useful in that it enables the description of such complicated environments and provides the flexibility to include marketing mix variables such as price and advertising in the regression analysis.
