        Pretreatment with Lycopene Attenuates Oxidative Stress-Induced Apoptosis in Human Mesenchymal Stem Cells

        Human mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) have been used in cell-based therapy to promote revascularization after peripheral or myocardial ischemia. High levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS) are involved in the senescence and apoptosis of MSCs, causing defective neovascularization. Here, we examined the effect of the natural antioxidant lycopene on oxidative stress-induced apoptosis in MSCs. Although H2O2 (200 mM) increased intracellular ROS levels in human MSCs, lycopene (10 μmM) pretreatment suppressed H2O2-induced ROS generation and increased survival. H2O2-induced ROS increased the levels of phosphorylated p38 mitogen activated protein kinase (MAPK), Jun-N-terminal kinase (JNK), ataxia telangiectasia mutated (ATM), and p53, which were inhibited by lycopene pretreatment. Furthermore, lycopene pretreatment decreased the expression of cleaved poly (ADP ribose) polymerase-1 (PARP-1) and caspase-3 and increased the expression of B-cell lymphoma 2 (Bcl-2) and Bcl-2-associated X protein (Bax), which were induced by H2O2 treatment. Moreover, lycopene significantly increased manganese superoxide dismutase (MnSOD) expression and decreased cellular ROS levels via the PI3K-Akt pathway. Our findings show that lycopene pretreatment prevents ischemic injury by suppressing apoptosis-associated signal pathway and enhancing anti-oxidant protein, suggesting that lycopene could be developed as a beneficial broad-spectrum agent for the successful MSC transplantation in ischemic diseases.

        코아-셀 구조를 가지는 전도성 폴리피롤 나노섬유를 이용한 메탄올 센서 제작

        Electrically conductive polypyrrole-polyvinylpyrrolidone (PPy-PVP) nanofiber mats with a core-shell structure have been successfully fabricated by a two-step process: the formation of FeCl3-containing PVP nanofiber mat by electrospinning, and the vapor-phase polymerization (VPP) of pyrrole monomer on the mat in a sealed chamber at room temperature. Surface morphology and chemical composition of the PPy-PVP mat were characterized by SEM, EDX and FTIR analyses. The as-prepared nonwoven mat was composed of PPy-PVP nanofibers with an average diameter of 300 nm. The sheet conductivity of the nanofiber mat was measured to be approximately 0.01 S/cm by a four-point probe. We have also investigated gas-sensing properties of PPy-PVP nanofiber mat upon exposure to methanol vapor. The PPy-PVP nanofiber sensors were observed to have excellent methanol-sensing performance. The nanofiberbased core-shell nanostructure could give an opportunity to fabricate a highly sensitive and fast response sensor due to its high surfaceto-volume ratio.

        실용음악 전공 학생들의 발성치료 전후 성대 및 음성 특성 비교

        Background and Objectives : Many students major in applied music singing have various difficulties in phonation when they sing or perform. But the studies about this cause are lack. The purpose of this study is whether singing voice therapy based on vocal music is effective or not to applied music singing students that have difficulties in phonation. Materials and Methods : Singing voice therapy program had been done to 8 students major in applied music singing during 7 weeks. We did laryngeal stroboscope, perceptual, acoustic and aerodynamic examination before and after singing voice therapy to this students. And we studied post examination results have differences or improvements compared to pre examination results. Results : Four male students don't have effective improvement after singing voice therapy but they shows slight improvement in aerodynamic examination values compared to pre examination values. Four female students shows improvement in aerodynamic examination values and pitch range increasing. Above all, one student's vocal nodules disappeared after singing voice therapy. Conclusion : Singing voice therapy based on music singing is very effective to the students major in applied music singing. Above all, their curriculum in applied music singing should include phonation training based on music singing before training perform and technic practices.

      • Development of safety diagnostic robot for industrial plant environment

        In this paper, a robot for safety diagnosis is presented to solve the problem of safety diagnosis at industrial plant sites. Safety diagnosis is essential for industrial plants because accidents at industrial plants cause huge economic losses as well as casualties. However, safety diagnosis is difficult due to various dangers such as suffocation and gas explosions in industrial factories. Therefore, we have developed a robot that performs safety diagnoses instead of humans. We designed a mobile robot with various environmental sensors for safety diagnosis and autonomous navigation and installed autonomous mission performance software to enable unmanned safety diagnosis. When a robot receives a mission from the manager, it plans suitable for the mission and moves autonomously through an autonomous navigation algorithm and conducts safety diagnosis at the target point. It also visually shows the current state through the user interface and informs the user of the current diagnostic results. In this paper, we tested robots in an industrial plant environment and confirmed that robots can replace humans.

        Background: Facial skin rejuvenation has long been the most highly desired aesthetic procedure. The demand for no-downtime procedures in skin rejuvenation has guided researchers to develop newer non-invasive procedures based on thermal effects that result in collagen remodeling. Objectives: The purpose of this prospective pilot study was to assess the effectiveness and safety of intraoral treatment with Er: YAG laser using a non-ablative mode. Methods: Nine patients were treated with a 2940 nm Er:YAG laser using the intra-oral technique. All received three sessions of treatment. Wrinkles severity (the nasolabial fold and the perioral wrinkles) was assessed by two independent evaluators before and after each treatment using the Modified Fitzpatrick Wrinkle Scale. A skin biopsy was also performed before and 3 months afterthe final session. Results: The mean patient age was 52 years. A significant reduction of perioral wrinkles was observed after treatment. The therapy was also very well tolerated by all patients, with no discomfort described. Histologic evaluation showed greater dermal collagen with thickening of the dermis and straightening of elastic fibers in the reticular dermis after treatment. Conclusion: Through this pilot study, we describe a new non-invasive intraoral method using Er: YAG in a non-ablative mode for efficient reduction of perioral wrinkles, with no down time and no adverse effects observed.

        Background: High intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) has become one of the most popular non-invasive technologies for skin tightening and face lifting. HIFU is a highly precise medical procedure that delivers high-intensity focused ultrasound to the deeper layers of the skin. Although HIFU is beneficial to many, complications such as fat atrophy have been occasionally reported limiting its use in patients with a lean face. Objectives: In this study, we evaluated the safety andefficacy of HIFU on skin tightening under a modified protocol- repeated sessions of HIFU with short treatment intervals. Methods: Ten patients with facial laxity were photographed before and 3 months after receiving 3 sessions of HIFU (Ultra Skin), each with a 3-6 weeks interval. Treatment lines per session were adjusted to a maximum of 300 lines. Two blinded dermatologists assessed the clinical improvement in terms of skin tightening using a quartile grading scale. Any adverse effects were assessed during the entire study period. A punch biopsy was performed for histological analysis. Results: The mean patient age was 52 years. All patients experienced both subjective and objective improvement. There was no serious adverse effects. Histology showedgreater dermal collagen with thickening of the dermis and straightening of elastic fibers in the reticular dermis after treatment. Conclusion: HIFU performed at modified parameters may be a favorable alternative to the conventional HIFU.

        Risk factor, monitoring, and treatment for snakebite induced coagulopathy: a multicenter retrospective study

        Background: Snakebite can cause various complications, including coagulopathy. The clinical features of snakebite-associated coagulopathy differ from those of disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) caused by other diseases and its treatment is controversial. Methods: We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of patients hospitalized for snakebite between January 2006 and September 2018. Results: A total of 226 patients were hospitalized due to snakebite. Their median hospital stay was 4.0 days (interquartile range, 2.0 to 7.0 days). Five patients arrived at hospital with shock and one patient died. Twenty-one patients had overt DIC according to the International Society of Thrombosis and Hemostasis scoring system. Two patients developed major bleeding complications. Initial lower cholesterol level at presentation was associated with the development of overt DIC. International normalization ratio (INR) exceeding the laboratory’s measurement limit was recorded as late as 4 to 5 days after the bite. Higher antivenom doses (≥18,000 units) and transfusion of fresh frozen plasma (FFP) or cryoprecipitate did not affect prolonged INR duration or hospital stay in the overt DIC patients without bleeding. Conclusions: Initial lower cholesterol level may be a risk factor for overt DIC following snakebite. Although patients lack apparent symptoms, the risk of coagulopathy should be assessed for at least 4 to 5 days following snakebite. Higher antivenom doses and transfusion of FFP or cryoprecipitate may be unbeneficial for coagulopathic patients without bleeding.

        Sulforaphane inhibits the Th2 immune response in ovalbumin-induced asthma

        Sulforaphane (1-isothiocyanato-4-(methylsulfinyl)-butane), belonging to a family of natural compounds that are abundant in broccoli, has received significant therapeutic interest in recent years. However, the molecular basis of its effects remains to be elucidated. In this study, we attempt to determine whether sulforaphane regulates the inflammatory response in an ovalbumin (OVA)-induced murine asthma model. Mice were sensitized with OVA, treated with sulforaphane, and then challenged with OVA. Sulforaphane administration significantly alleviated the OVA-induced airway hyperresponsiveness to inhaled methacholine. Additionally, sulforaphane suppressed the increase in the levels of SOCS-3 and GATA-3 and IL-4 expression in the OVA-challenged mice. Collectively, our results demonstrate that sulforaphane regulates Th2 immune responses. This sutdy provides novel insights into the regulatory role of sulforaphane in allergen- induced Th2 inflammation and airway responses, which indicates its therapeutic potential for asthma and other allergic diseases.
