Booske, J. H.,Dobbs, R. J.,Joye, C. D.,Kory, C. L.,Neil, G. R.,Gun-Sik Park,Jaehun Park,Temkin, R. J. IEEE 2011 IEEE transactions on terahertz science and technol Vol.1 No.1
<P>Recent research and development has been incredibly successful at advancing the capabilities for vacuum electronic device (VED) sources of powerful terahertz (THz) and near-THz coherent radiation, both CW or average and pulsed. Currently, the VED source portfolio covers over 12 orders of magnitude in power (mW-to-GW) and two orders of magnitude in frequency (from <; 0.1 to >; 10 THz). Further advances are still possible and anticipated. They will be enabled by improved understanding of fundamental beam-wave interactions, electromagnetic mode competition and mode control, along with research and development of new materials, fabrication methods, cathodes, electron beam alignment and focusing, magnet technologies, THz metrology and advanced, broadband output radiation coupling techniques.</P>
Compositional Correlations in Canine Genome Reflects Similarity with Human Genes
Joy, Faustin,Basak, Surajit,Gupta, Sanjib Kumar,Das, Pranab Jyoti,Ghosh, Shankar Kumar,Ghosh, Tapash Chandra Korean Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biol 2006 Journal of biochemistry and molecular biology Vol.39 No.3
The base compositional correlations that hold among various coding and noncoding regions of the canine genome have been analysed. The distribution pattern of genes, on the basis of $GC_3$ composition, shows a wide range similar to that observed in human. However the occurrence of maximum number of genes was observed in the range of 65-75% of $GC_3$ composition. The correlation between the coding DNA sequences of canine with the different noncoding regions (introns and flanking regions) is found to be significant and in many cases the degree of correlation show similarity to human genome. We found that these correlations are not limited to the GC content alone, but is holding at the level of the frequency of individual bases as well. The present study suggests that canines ideally belong to the predicted 'general mammalian pattern' of genome composition along with human beings.
A Data Fusion Algorithm for Wireless Sensor Networks
Joy Iong-Zong Chen,Member,Chun-Jen Chen,Chin-Chung Yu 대한전자공학회 2008 ITC-CSCC :International Technical Conference on Ci Vol.2008 No.7
The scenario deployed with mobile sensors for tracking both of non-maneuvering and maneuvering targets traveling in the phenomena exploits with mobile WSN (wireless sensor networks) is simulated in this paper. In order to solve the complicated situation and reduce computation burden because of the multiple sensing event exists mobile WSN environments is proposed. Moreover, a variable structure model is established as an adaptive maneuvering compensator to solve both data association and sensor maneuvering problems simultaneously, that is, the detection algorithm for multi-mobile sensor tracking in WSN investigated too. The simulations of multi-mobile sensor tracking based on the proposed method are conducted for tracking the targets. Computer simulation results indicate that the approach successfully tracks multiple sensors and has good precision also.
A Cross-Cultural Comparison of Fears in Turkish, South Korean, and American Students
Joy J. Burnham,Sunkyung Kim,Begum Serim Yildiz,Morgan Kiper Riechel,Ozgur Erdur-baker,Christina N. Kirby,Juliana K. Morgado 한국상담학회 2016 Journal of Asia Pacific counseling Vol.6 No.1
Fears of children from Turkey, South Korea, and the United States were compared for the first time using translated versions of the American Fear Survey Schedule (FSSC-AM; Burnham, 2005). Although several versions of the Fear Survey Schedule for Children (FSSC; Scherer & Nakamura, 1968) have been used since it was introduced, no published studies have reported the fears of South Korean children, and only a limited number of Turkish studies have used the FSSC (Serim, 2010; Serim-Yıldız & Erdur-Baker, 2013; Serim-Yıldız, Erdur-Baker, & Bugay, 2013). This exploratory study presents data from middle and high school students from two countries rarely studied in the fear literature. Fears of school-aged children in Asia and Eurasia are presented and compared to an American sample. The sample included 637 middle and high school students, and significant differences were found across age, gender, and country, and in most common fears. Implications for counseling and future research will be discussed.

Based on the scenario assumed that the CFO (carrier frequency offset), which is caused by the ICI (inter-carrier interference), exists in the environments of short-term fading, a multi-dimension combining (M-D combining) receiver for an MC-CDMA (multi-carrier coded-division multiple-access) system is designed and proposed considerably to overcome the system performance degradation. It is worthwhile claiming that is not only the fading parameter of the correlated-fading model dominates the system performance of an MC-CDMA system, but the number of antenna with the M-D combining receiver also definitely affects the system performance.
Spaces, Power and Empowerment in India : the Inter-linkage with Domestic Violence
Joy, DESHMUKH-RANADIVE Ewha Womans University Press 2006 Asian Journal of Women's Studies(AJWS) Vol.12 No.1
This paper contextualizes domestic violence within a framework that measures power and empowerment. It argues that while violence is a manifestation of power over a person, processes of empowerment also give rise to violence. While violence is the price of powerlessness, it can occur at the cost of empowerment. Further, there are different manifestations of violence; for instance, deprivation and denial are in themselves violent. However, inbuilt hierarchies within domestic units make for situations that are conducive to domestic violence since these are located within non-democratic patriarchal structures of power. There are norms of distribution that govern domestic units, allocating work and resources among their members. These norms also distribute the incidence and impact of domestic violence. Hence, while it may be one woman who faces physical violence as the primary trigger, it may be relocated when she is also violent with other women members of the household, and/or towards children, particularly girls. The roles of voice and loyalty within domestic units are examined, since these make for perceptions whereby women accept violence as part of 'normal' life due to which exit as an option is not viable. This study uses the concept of 'spaces' to analyze the inter-linkages between power, empowerment and domestic violence. Such an analysis seeks to devise meaningful strategies for empowerment that do not exacerbate violence in women's lives.
Strengthening Metabolic Bypasses for Enhanced Isopropanol Production in Corynebacterium glutamicum
Joy CHA,Young Jin KO,Myeong-Eun LEE,Sung Ok HAN 한국생물공학회 2021 한국생물공학회 학술대회 Vol.2021 No.10
IPA (Isopropanol) is a secondary alcohol mainly used in pharmaceuticals, bioenergy and chemical products, and is a promising ingredient as a bio-substitute for petroleum. In this study, we constructed Corynebacterium glutamicum to produce IPA by introducing the IPA biosynthetic pathway, but the production yield was low. Thus, we strengthened the ketone body production pathway in C. glutamicum. Isoprenoid bypass was integrated to push the flux towards IPA, which did not show the expected increase. Therefore, to enhance ketone body production, a dual pathway including a classical and bypass pathway, was introduced instead. We controlled gene expression and flux through the construction of strong synthetic promoters. This is the first study using this pathway to efficiently produce IPA in C. glutamicum. We also introduced and screened each of four different secondary alcohol dehydrogenase genes from different bacterial origins to pull out IPA production. Consequently, this indicates that strengthening the ketone body biosynthetic pathway via the integration of classical and bypass pathways and synthetic promoters is metabolically effective in enhancing IPA production.
