        NF-κB in Cellular Senescence and Cancer Treatment

        The NF-${\kappa}B$ pathway transcriptionally controls a large set of target genes that play important roles in cell survival, inflammation, and immune responses. While many studies showed anti-tumorigenic and pro-survival role of NF-${\kappa}B$ in cancer cells, recent findings postulate that NF-${\kappa}B$ participates in a senescence-associated cytokine response, thereby suggesting a tumor restraining role of NF-${\kappa}B$. In this review, we discuss implications of the NF-${\kappa}B$ signaling pathway in cancer. Particularly, we emphasize the connection of NF-${\kappa}B$ with cellular senescence as a response to chemotherapy, and furthermore, present examples how distinct oncogenic network contexts surrounding NF-${\kappa}B$ produce fundamentally different treatment outcomes in aggressive B-cell lymphomas as an example.

        Aldol condensation of acetic acid with formaldehyde to acrylic acid over SiO2-, SBA-15-, and HZSM-5-supported V-P-O catalysts

        Aldol condensation of acetic acid with formaldehyde to acrylic acid was catalyzed by the SiO2-, SBA-15-,and HZSM-5-supported vanadium phosphorous oxide (V-P-O) catalysts prepared by the incipientwetness impregnation. The supports obviously increased the surface areas and changed the acid–baseproperties of the as-prepared catalysts. V-P-O/SBA-15 catalysts with high acid and alkali quantitiesexhibited high catalytic activities for the aldol condensation of acetic acid with formaldehyde to acrylicacid. When the V-P-O/SBA-15 catalyst with the P/V mole ratio of 2.0:1 catalyzed the reaction at 330–370 8C, the acrylic acid selectivities were 90.8–70.2% at the formaldehyde conversions of 14.3–68.7%.

      • A Comparative Study on Bilingual Language Policy in Quebec and in Yanbian Korean Autonomous Prefecture

        The linguistic reality in any multi-ethnic countries has always the focal point for criticism, namely, the monopoly of the majority language, in many cases the economically and politically privileged language, is claimed to undermine the vitality of the minority languages, in particular in the countries that practice assimilatory language policy. The language policy advocated by the Canadian government in general and the Quebecker government in particular, though the latter is rather radical, is worth being studied and compared with that in countries with the similar linguistic dilemma. By comparing the language policy and the bilingualism in the Yanbian Korean Autonomous Prefecture (Hereinafter the YKAP) of China and in Quebec of Canada, the authors find that the language policy system in the YKAP implicitly shuns the diction of “bilingualism” or “bilingual”, though endowed the minority language with sufficient freedom for social use and development. The demographic survey of the language use and language education indicates that the societal bilingualism is barely the linguistic reality in the YKAP. The bilingual use and education generally confines themselves in the Korean ethnic community with decreasing number of bilingual users inside it and increasing number outside it, the totally different story other than Quebec of Canada. The authors also find the different government intervention in formulating bilingual legal framework and building the societal bilingualism toward the equal use of the majority and minority language. The segregational education program and the immersion program are representative of the political environment and discourse in the YKAP and Quebec.

        Effect of Iron on Cytolysin A Expression in Salmonella enterica serovar Typhi

        Previously, a novel protein ClyA (Cytolysin A) has been identified in Escherichia coli K-12, Salmonella enterica serovars Typhi and Paratyphi A and Shigella. Salmonella spp. synthesize substantial amounts of ClyA upon infection of the human host, although the mechanism by which ClyA is induced in vivo is unclear. Since environmental signals could control the expression of virulence determinants, ClyA expression in S. Typhi Ty2 was tested by Western blotting in the presence of normal pooled human serum (NPS). The level of ClyA expression increased in the presence of NPS in a concentration-dependent manner. RPMI 1640 medium similarly induced ClyA expression. ClyA expression was inversely proportional to the concentration of iron in RPMI medium. Therefore, we speculated that iron inhibited the expression of ClyA in S. Typhi Ty2, and free iron depletion may be one of the causes of S. Typhi-mediated induction of ClyA in vivo. Transcription from a clyA-lacZ fusion gene decreased as iron concentration increased, but not as significantly as the ClyA protein expression. It is concluded that the regulatory effect of iron on clyA expression is mainly at translational level.

        On the Fairness of the Multiuser Eigenmode Transmission System

        The Multiuser Eigenmode Transmission (MET) has generated significant interests in literature due to its optimal performance in linear precoding systems. The MET can simultaneously transmit several spatial multiplexing eigenmodes to multiple users which significantly enhance the system performance. The maximum number of users that can be served simultaneously is limited due to the constraints on the number antennas, and thus an appropriate user selection is critical to the MET system. Various algorithms have been developed in previous works such as the enumerative search algorithm. However, the high complexities of these algorithms impede their applications in practice. In this paper, motivated by the necessity of an efficient and effective user selection algorithm, a low complexity recursive user selection algorithm is proposed for the MET system. In addition, the fairness of the MET system is improved by using the combination of the proposed user selection algorithm and the adaptive Proportional Fair Scheduling (PFS) algorithm. Extensive simulations are implemented to verify the efficiency and effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.

        A Numerical Investigation of the Impacts of Anthropogenic Sulfate Aerosol on Regional Climate in East Asia

        Aerosol and its effects, especially its indirect effects, on climate have drawn more and more attention in recent years. In this study, the first indirect radiative forcing (RF) of sulfate aerosol and its impacts on the regional climate in East Asia during the period from December 2008 to November 2009 were investigated. Affected by the general circulation and the conversion efficiency from SO2 to SO4 2− in aqueous phase, a remarkable seasonal variation of sulfate was found. The results show that the highest sulfate concentration as large as 24 g m−2 appears in the summer. The indirect RF due to sulfate aerosol at the top of atmosphere (TOA) and the surface is negative, which leads to a cooling effect on the surface by 0.12oC and a reduction of precipitation by 0.01 mm d−1. The tendencies of temperature and rainfall have significant diversity in space and time. The cloud feedback, associated with the hydrologic cycle and energy budget, is responsible for this discordant distribution. The variation of low cloud dominates the change of surface temperature. The subsidence due to the cooling effect in the mid atmosphere restrained and reduced the low clouds, leading to an apparent warm effect on the surface in Northeast Mongolia.

        Exploratory Study and Empirical Study on Critical Website Success Factors of Chinese Publishing Enterprises

        The study on the critical success factors (CSF) for electronic commerce systems has been a hot topic in both academe and industry. On the basis of reviewing a lot of research papers on CSF and analyzing their problems, this paper designs the initial assessment indictors and website features and functions influencing ECfor EC success according to the Performance Evaluation System for Chinese Enterprise,, related theories and researches. Using Delphi survey and data analysis, we get the five important assessment indictors and seven important web features and functions. Furthermore,EC the hypothesis of CSF model is proposed for EC. The result is the basis of empirical studies on CSF for EC, which means that other researchers can do empirical study in different industries to set up the assessment model of EC success and critical impact factors. Finally, we conduct a survey on the Chinese Ppublishing Iindustry to test one of the hypothesis. The result shows that the hypothesis is partly supported, which means useful and understandable information, complete and timely information, credible and accurate information, all product-related information are the critical success factors for EC publishing industry. This research not only impels EC research in China, but also has instructional effect on the implementation of EC for enterprises to increase the success rate of EC.

        ROBUST H∞ FAULT-TOLERANT LATERAL CONTROL OF FOUR-WHEEL-STEERING AUTONOMOUS VEHICLES

        This paper presents a robust H∞ fault-tolerant lateral controller of four wheel steering autonomous vehicles to enhance the autonomous driving performance and to track the desired road when a steering wheel fault happens. First, the lateral dynamic model of four wheel steering autonomous vehicles is constructed, which contains the features of parameter uncertainties and actuator faults of vehicles. Then, since the faulty steering wheel may fail to offer the desired torque and harm the lateral motion control system of autonomous vehicles, a novel robust H∞ fault tolerant state feedback lateral control law of four steering autonomous vehicles is designed to deal with actuator faults and parameter uncertainties. Finally, simulation tests are implemented in the Adams-Simulink joint platform with a high-fidelity and full-car model, and results verify the validity of this proposed control scheme.

        Predictive current controller and compensator‑based discrete current controller for single‑phase bridge inverters

        Transfer efficiency and power quality are two critical factors when it comes to grid-connected distributed generation systems. Single-phase inverters are commonly used in distributed generation systems under 10 kilowatts as the connection between the gird and renewable energy sources (RESs). In this application, grid current distortion plays a pivotal role in determining inverter performance. In this article, an improved current control strategy based on a predictive current controller (PCC) and a compensator is presented to decrease current harmonic distortion and increase power quality. The controller design method inspects a single-phase inverter system as a digital platform, and designs the controller in discrete time in order to obtain a more precise and effective controller than that in continuous time. The discretization procedures using sampling and hold (S&H) are taken into consideration in the design process. The improved current controller is a DSP-based digital current controller for grid-connected single-phase bridge inverters, whose performance is optimized by considering the time delay caused by analog–digital conversion (ADC) and computations. A comparison has been made to analyze the performance of the single-phase grid-connected inverter system with PCC and ICC. Experimental results are shown to validate the effectiveness of the designed current controller.
