      • Lactobacillus casei AHU 1055 및 Lactobacillus acidophilus JAM 1043의 凍結乾燥와 生存率에 關한 硏究

        In order to find the most suitable conditions of freeze-drying for the long term preservation of lacto-bacillus casei AHU 1055 and Lactobacillus acidophilus JAM 1043, the growth phase, the cryoprotection medium and inoculum size have been studied. The results obtained in this study are summerized as follows : 1. L. casei AHU 1055 and L.acidophilus JAM 1043 reached to stationary phase after incubating at 37˚C for 16hrs and 12hrs in MRS broth, respectively. 2. The highest viability of each strains was obtained in 11% skim-milk for L. casei AHU 1055 and 9% skim-milk for L. acidophilus JAM 1043 as basic cryoprotection medium. 3. The complex medium contained 11% skim milk powder, 2.5% arginine and 3% glucose was the best suspending midium for freeze-drying of L. casei AHU 1055, and the medium contained 9% skim milk powder, 7% glycerol, 9% lactose, 0.5% arginine was the best suspending medium for freeze-drying of L. acidophilus JAM 1043. 4. The strong positive correlation was found between inoculum size and the survival rate in both strains. 5. When the tested strains were cultured and freeze-dried under the best optimal conditions, the survival rates of freeze- dried L. casei AHU 1055 and L. acidophilus JAM 1043 were 85.8% and 84.0%, respectively.

        갑상선기능저하증에 기인한 내인성 급사 1예 보고

        Although it is known that hypothyroidism can cause cardiac dysfunction, it is very hard to find a case report on sudden death due to hypothyroidism. There are only two reported cases on mediline; one is about a 15-year-old girl who died suddenly of Hashimoto's thyroiditis and the other is about a 31-year-old man who also died suddenly of hypothyroidism associated with chronic lymphocytic thyroiditis. Recently we found a young woman who unexpectedly died while she was sleeping. She was diagnosed as hypothyroidism when she went to hospital about a month before she died. At autopsy there were roughly four abnormal findings; Hashimoto's thyroiditis, mild chronic active hepatitis, diverticulosis and accessory spleen. Trace of chlorpheniramine was detected in gastric remains and blood alcohol level was 0.37 percent. To our knowledge, this is the first case reporting sudden and unexpected natural death associated with hypothyroidism in Korea.

        『한비자』 우언의 소재에 대한 고찰

        In the Warring States period, allegory reached its highest level of influence when it was utilized by the all philosophers and scholars represented by Han Fei Tzu and Chuang-tzu and who established the foundations of Chinese allegory. It can be said that it is the highlighting of figurative and lively figuration of characters, the use of diverse rhetorical techniques, and the appropriate choice of materials which attract people’s interest through which Han Fei Tzu’s allegory and Chuang-tzu’s allegory were able to represent the highest level in this period. However, existing research on Han Fei Tzu’s allegory are very scant and particularly the bodies of research that systematically examine Han Fei Tzu’s allegories are minimal and the classification of their types is also not consistent. So, by referring to the existing research, Han Fei Tzu’s allegory materials are uniformly classified into 3 types: mythical stories, historical stories, and folk stories. And the historical stories are classified into war stories, monarch stories, and subject stories. Beyond that, the folk stories are classified into 2 types: personification stories, and animal stories (animal stories that use personification rhetorical techniques and animal stories that do not use personification rhetorical techniques) and I attempt to examine these systematically and conduct an in-depth study on these particular stories. Based on my conducted research, I will explore the literary value of Han Fei Tzu’s allegory and contribute to the researches on Han Fei Tzu’s allegory.

        『한비자』 우언이 중국 우언에 끼친 영향

        유종원이 중국 우언에 끼친 영향은 매우 심원하다. 그는 중국 우언을 장르적으로 독립하게 하는 데 기여했을 뿐만 아니라, 선진시대를 이어 두 번째 황금기를 맞이하게 하는 데 기여했던 인물이다. 유종원이 우언 창작에서 이처럼 매우 큰 성과를 거둘 수 있었던 것은 『한비자』의 우언과 밀접한 연관이 있다. 유종원의 우언은 비록 양한위진남북조시대처럼 『한비자』의 우언을 모방하고 답습하지 않았지만, 우언 장르의 형성, 사실주의 풍격 등에서 영향을 받는다. 『한비자』 우언의 장르적으로 독립하고자 했던 경향이 양한위진남북조시대의 실천을 거쳐 유종원에 의해 계승되고 발전되면서 중국 우언은 드디어 장르적으로 독립하게 된다. 『한비자』 우언의 사실주의 풍격도 유종원의 우언에 의해 계승되고 발전되어, 중국 우언을 철리우언의 영향에서 벗어나게 하여 풍자우언으로 바뀌게 한다. The effects that Yu Jong-won has had on Chinese allegory are very profound. He is the one who contributed not only to push Chinese allegory to be independent in terms of genre but also to force it have its second best golden age after the pre-Qin era. The fact that Yu Jong-won was able to attain such great success in allegorical creation is closely related to Han Fei Tzu’s form of allegory. Although Yu Jong-won’s allegory did not imitate or follow Han Fei Tzu’s allegory like the Period of Earlier and Later Han Wei Qin North and South Dynasties, it has been influenced in terms of the allegory’s independence and realistic charm. Han Fei Tzu’s allegory, which had the tendency of trying to be independent in terms of genre, went through the practices of the Period of Earlier and Later Han Wei Qin North and South Dynasties and was further continued and developed by Yu Jong-won. Eventually, Chinese allegory became independent in terms of genre. The realistic charm of Han Fei Tzu’s allegory was continued and developed under Yu Jong-won’s produced allegory, which makes Chinese allegory break away from the influence of philosophical alle gory and move into satiric allegory.

        『한비자』우언의 인물형상 고찰

        한비자의 우언이 장자의 우언과 더불어 선진우언의 쌍벽을 이룰 수 있었던 것은 다양하고 전형적인 인물형상을 부각하였기 때문이다. 그러나 한비자가 중국우언의 발전에 끼친 영향이 심원했음에도 불구하고 한비자 우언에 대한 연구는 양적으로나 질적으로 모두 매우 빈약하다. 특히 인물형상에 대한 연구는 더욱 미미하다. 이에 본고는 먼저 선행연구들을 참고하여 한비자의 우언에서 부각한 인물형상을 지자, 우인, 간신, 위선자, 공자, 법술지사 등 여섯 가지 유형으로 분류한다. Han Fei Tzu’s and Chuang-tzu’s uses of allegory classified them as being two of the most advanced forms of allegory as they tended to highlight individual and diverse figuration of characters. However, despite the fact that Han Fei Tzu influenced Chinese allegory profoundly, there has been scant research into his allegory at both the quantitative and qualitative levels. In particular, research on the figuration of characters is even harder to come by. The current research is concerned with the figuration of characters highlighted in Han Fei Tzu’s allegory which are classified into 6 separate types: the wise, the foolish, disloyal vassals, hypocrites, officials, and legal experts. This research draws on previous research in the field and hopes to expand on it.

      • Genetic Variants at 6p21.1 and 7p15.3 Identified by GWASs of Multiple Cancers and Ovarian Cancer Risk: a Case-control Study in Han Chinese Women

        A recent study summarized several published genome-wide association studies (GWASs) of cancer and reported two pleiotropic loci at 6p21.1 and 7p15.3 contributing to multiple cancers including lung cancer, noncardia gastric cancer (NCGC), and esophageal squamous-cell carcinoma (ESCC) in Han Chinese. However, it is not known whether such genetic variants have similar effects on the risk of gynecologic cancers, such as ovarian cancer. Hence, we explored associations between genetic variants in 6p21.1 and 7p15.3 and ovarian cancer risk in Han Chinese women. We performed an independent case-control study by genotyping the two loci (rs2494938 A > G at 6p21.1 and rs2285947 A > G at 7p15.3) in a total of 377 ovarian cancer cases and 1,034 cancer-free controls using TaqMan allelic discrimination assay. We found that rs2285947 at 7p15.3 was significantly associated with risk of ovarian cancer with per allele odds ratio (OR) of 1.33 [95% confidence interval (CI): 1.08-1.64, P=0.008]. However, no significant association was observed between rs2494938 and ovarian cancer risk. Our results showed that rs2285947 at 7p15.3 may also contribute to the development of ovarian cancer in Han Chinese women, further suggesting pleiotropy of 7p15.3 in multiple cancers.

        Effect of Polysaccharides from Acanthopanax senticosus on Intestinal Mucosal Barrier of Escherichia coli Lipopolysaccharide Challenged Mice

        To investigate the role of polysaccharide from Acanthopanax senticosus (ASPS) in preventing lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced intestinal injury, 18 mice (at 5 wk of age) were assigned to three groups with 6 replicates of one mouse each. Mice were administrated by oral gavage with or without ASPS (300 mg/kg body weight) for 14 days and were injected with saline or LPS at 15 days. Intestinal samples were collected at 4 h post-challenge. The results showed that ASPS ameliorated LPS-induced deterioration of digestive ability of LPS-challenged mice, indicated by an increase in intestinal lactase activity (45%, p<0.05), and the intestinal morphology, as proved by improved villus height (20.84%, p<0.05) and villus height:crypt depth ratio (42%, p<0.05), and lower crypt depth in jejunum (15.55%, p<0.05), as well as enhanced intestinal tight junction proteins expression involving occludin-1 (71.43%, p<0.05). ASPS also prevented intestinal inflammation response, supported by decrease in intestinal inflammatory mediators including tumor necrosis factor ${\alpha}$ (22.28%, p<0.05) and heat shock protein (HSP70) (77.42%, p<0.05). In addition, intestinal mucus layers were also improved by ASPS, as indicated by the increase in number of goblet cells (24.89%, p<0.05) and intestinal trefoil peptide (17.75%, p<0.05). Finally, ASPS facilitated mRNA expression of epidermal growth factor (100%, p<0.05) and its receptor (200%, p<0.05) gene. These results indicate that ASPS can prevent intestinal mucosal barrier injury under inflammatory conditions, which may be associated with up-regulating gene mRNA expression of epidermal growth factor and its receptor.

        Effects of Acanthopanax senticosus Polysaccharide Supplementation on Growth Performance, Immunity, Blood Parameters and Expression of Pro-inflammatory Cytokines Genes in Challenged Weaned Piglets

        To investigate the effect of dietary Acanthopanax senticosus polysaccharide (ASPS) on growth performance, immunity, blood parameters and mRNA expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines in immunologically challenged piglets, an experiment employing $2{\times}2$ factorial arrangement concerning dietary ASPS treatment (0 or 800 mg/kg) and immunological challenge (lipopolysaccharide [LPS] or saline injection) was conducted with 64 crossbred piglets (weaned at 28 d of age, average initial body weight of $7.25{\pm}0.21kg$) assigned to two dietary ASPS treatments with 8 replicates of 4 pigs each. Half of the piglets of per dietary treatment were injected with LPS or saline on d 14. Blood samples were obtained at 3 h after immunological injection on d 14 and piglets were slaughtered to obtain spleen samples on d 21. Dietary ASPS did not affect average daily gain (ADG) (p = 0.634), average daily feed intake (ADFI) (p = 0.655), and gain:feed (p = 0.814) prior to LPS challenge. After LPS challenge, for LPS-challenged pigs those fed ASPS had higher ADG and ADFI than the non-supplemented group (p<0.05), and an interaction between $LPS{\times}ASPS$ was observed on the two indices (p<0.05). Dietary ASPS improved lymphocyte proliferation among saline-injected and LPS-injected pigs (p<0.05). Interaction between $LPS{\times}ASPS$ was also revealed on lymphocyte proliferation (p<0.05). Circulatory concentration of IgG was influenced neither by ASPS (p = 0.803) or LPS (p = 0.692), nor their interaction (p = 0.289). Plasma concentration and spleen mRNA expression of interleukin-1beta (IL-$1{\beta}$), interleukin-6 (IL-6), and tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-${\alpha}$ were induced to increase (p<0.05) by LPS challenge, in contrast, these indices were decreased by dietary ASPS (p<0.05), and interactions were found on these cytokines (p<0.05). For LPS-challenged pigs, dietary ASPS also reduced the circulating concentration and spleen mRNA expression of IL-$1{\beta}$, IL-6 as well as TNF-${\alpha}$ (p<0.05). The interaction between $LPS{\times}ASPS$ was also observed on the circulating concentration of insulin-like growth factor-I, ${\alpha}$-acid glycoprotein (${\alpha}$-AGP), nonesterified fatty acid, and glucose (p<0.05). The results of this study demonstrate that dietary ASPS can modulate the release of pro-inflammatory cytokines during immunological challenge, which might enable piglets to achieve better growth performance.

        Analysis of thermally induced vibration of cable-beam structures

        Cable-beam structures characterized by variable stiffness nonlinearities are widely found in various structural engineering applications, for example in space deployable structures. Space deployablestructures in orbit experience both high temperature caused by sun’s radiation and low temperature by Earth’s umbral shadow. The space temperature difference is above 300K at the moment of exiting or entering Earth’s umbral shadow, which results in structural thermally induced vibration. To understand the thermally induced oscillations, the analytical expression of Boley parameter of cable-beam structures is firstly deduced. Then, the thermally induced vibration of cable-beam structures is analyzed using finite element method to verify the effectiveness of Boley parameter. Finally, by analyzing the obtained numerical results and the corresponding Boley parameters, it can be concluded that the derived expression of Boley parameter is valid to evaluate the occurrence conditions of thermally induced vibration of cable-beam structures and the key parameters influencing structural thermal flutter are the cable stiffness and thickness of beams.

        Effect of Low Ambient Temperature on the Concentration of Free Radicals Related to Ascites in Broiler Chickens

        A flock of Arbor Acres chickens were reared in cages and provided with high energy pelleted feed. At 14 d of age, a total of 350 birds were separated into 3 groups randomly as follows: 100 birds were exposed to ambient temperature of 20$^{\circ}C$ as a control group, 150 birds were exposed to lower ambient temperature of 11$^{\circ}C$ to induce ascites (group I), and another group of 100 birds were exposed to lower ambient temperature of 11$^{\circ}C$ and fed diet containing 1% L-arginine for ascitic prophylactic treatment (group II). Blood and tissue samples (lung and liver) were collected from chickens at 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7 wk of age subsequently, to analyze the concentration and activities of free radicals, mononaldehyde (MDA), superoxide dismutase (SOD), Nitric Oxide (NO) and Nitric oxide synthase (NOS). The results showed that the prevalence of ascites in the control, group I and group II was 3%, 9.33% and 3% respectively (p<0.01). The concentration of free radicals in the lungs of 3 wks old preascitic broilers in group I was significantly higher than in the corresponding control group (p<0.05). The concentrations of free radicals in lung and liver in the 7 wk period, and that of NO and SOD in the plasma were significantly lower in group I than in the control group (p<0.01). However, the accumulated MDA contents in group I were higher than in the control group and group II (p<0.05), respectively. In the same way, the activity of NOS in group II was higher than both group I and control group (p<0.01) during the 7 wk period. There was no significant difference between SOD activities of group II and the control group (p>0.05), and also insignificant difference between NOS in group I and the control group (p>0.05). The results of this study indicate that there was a significant decrease in the concentration of MDA in group II. On the other hand, the concentration of free radicals decreased and MDA concentration increased in group I during the 7 wk period. The reduction in concentration of MDA in group II, following arginine supplementation may be associated with the scavenging activity of NO.
