        Hospitalization Due to Asthma Exacerbation: A China Asthma Research Network (CARN) Retrospective Study in 29 Provinces Across Mainland China

        Purpose: Details of patients hospitalized for asthma exacerbation in mainland China are lacking. To improve disease control and reduce economic burden, a large sample survey among this patient population is indispensable. This study aimed to investigate the clinical characteristics and outcomes of such patients. Methods: A retrospective study was conducted on patients hospitalized for asthma exacerbation in 29 hospitals of 29 regions in mainland China during the period 2013 to 2014. Demographic features, pre-admission conditions, exacerbation details, and outcomes were summarized. Risk factors for exacerbation severity were analyzed. Results: There were 3,240 asthmatic patients included in this study (57.7% females, 42.3% males). Only 28.0% used daily controller medications; 1,287 (39.7%) patients were not currently on inhaled corticosteroids. Acute upper airway infection was the most common trigger of exacerbation (42.3%). Patients with severe to life-threatening exacerbation tended to have a longer disease course, a smoking history, and had comorbidities such as hypertension, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and food allergy. The multivariate analysis showed that smoking history, comorbidities of hypertension, COPD, and food allergy were independent risk factors for more severe exacerbation. The number of patients hospitalized for asthma exacerbation varied with seasons, peaking in March and September. Eight patients died during the study period (mortality 0.25%). Conclusions: Despite enhanced education on asthma self-management in China during recent years, few patients were using daily controller medications before the onset of their exacerbation, indicating that more educational efforts and considerations are needed. The findings of this study may improve our understanding of hospital admission for asthma exacerbation in mainland China and provide evidence for decision-making.

        OSCILLATIONS IN A SUNSPOT WITH LIGHT BRIDGES

        <P>The Solar Optical Telescope on board Hinode observed a sunspot (AR 11836) with two light bridges (LBs) on 2013 August 31. We analyzed a two-hour Ca II H emission intensity data set and detected strong five-minute oscillation power on both LBs and in the inner penumbra. The time-distance plot reveals that the five-minute oscillation phase does not vary significantly along the thin bridge, indicating that the oscillations are likely to originate from underneath it. The slit taken along the central axis of the wide LB exhibits a standing wave feature. However, at the center of the wide bridge, the five-minute oscillation power is found to be stronger than at its sides. Moreover, the time-distance plot across the wide bridge exhibits a herringbone pattern that indicates a counter-stream of two running waves, which originated at the bridge's sides. Thus, the five-minute oscillations on the wide bridge also resemble the properties of running penumbral waves. The five-minute oscillations are suppressed in the umbra, while the three-minute oscillations occupy all three cores of the sunspot's umbra, separated by the LBs. The three-minute oscillations were found to be in phase at both sides of the LBs. This may indicate that either LBs do not affect umbral oscillations, or that umbral oscillations at different umbral cores share the same source. It also indicates that LBs are rather shallow objects situated in the upper part of the umbra. We found that umbral flashes (UFs) follow the life cycles of umbral oscillations with much larger amplitudes. They cannot propagate across LBs. UFs dominate the three-minute oscillation power within each core; however, they do not disrupt the phase of umbral oscillation.</P>

        Coordinated Control Strategy for Power Systems with Wind Farms Integration Based on Phase-plane Trajectory

        The dynamic characteristics of power systems become more and more complex because of the integration of large-scale wind power, which needs appropriate control strategy to guarantee stable operation. With wide area measurement system(WAMS) creating conditions for realizing realtime transient stability analysis, a new coordinated control strategy for power system transient stability control based on phase-plane trajectory was proposed. When the outputs of the wind farms change, the proposed control method is capable of selecting optimal generators to balance the deviation of wind power and prevent transient instability. With small disturbance on the base operating point, the coordinated sensitivity of each synchronous generator is obtained. Then the priority matrix can be formed by sorting the coordinated sensitivity in ascending order. Based on the real-time output change of wind farm, coordinated generators can be selected to accomplish the coordinated control with wind farms. The results in New England 10-genrator 39-bus system validate the effectiveness and superiority of the proposed coordinated control strategy.

        First principles study of monolayer Sb2S2Te and a mathematical model of a thin-film thermoelectric generator with maximum power point tracing

        The result of the structural, electronic and thermoelectric performance of monolayer Sb2S2Te, which is a brannew material, is calculated by using the method of full-potential linearized augmented plane-wave (FP-LAPW), and the exchange-correlation potential selected in this paper is generalized gradient approximation (GGA) scheme. There are no negative frequencies in the calculated phonon spectra, which demonstrates that dynamics of monolayer Sb2S2Te is stable in theory. The average value of lattice thermal conductivity (κl) is smaller than that of other thermoelectric (TE) materials, and monolayer Sb2S2Te has larger figure of merit (ZT) comparing with other well-known materials. According to the TE parameters (Seebeck coefficient S, electrical conductivity σ, electronic thermal conductivity κe and lattice thermal conductivity κl) of monolayer Sb2S2Te, an idealized model of thermoelectric generator (TEG) and a realistic model of maximum power point tracking (MPPT) are built. In addition, this paper studies the influence of different temperature zones, different temperature differences, cross sectional area, height and the number of P–N junction on output power and conversion efficiency of TEG. The results of physical calculation and simulation models show that the conversion efficiency of TEG of monolayer Sb2S2Te is larger than or close to that of other well-known materials, and the tracking accuracy of MPPT proposed in this paper is higher than or close to that of other researches.

        Enhanced Microwave Absorption Properties of Metal Organic Framework (MOF)-Derived Carbonaceous ZnO Incorporated Reduced Graphene Oxide Composites

        In this paper, the MOFs-derived carbonaceous ZnO and RGO (carbonaceous ZnO/RGO) composites have been prepared by the wet chemical method and carbonization process. The as-prepared products are characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Raman spectra, thermogravimetric (TG) analysis and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The electromagnetic parameters of carbonaceous ZnO/RGO composites are investigated by the vector network analyzer. The results exhibit carbonaceous ZnO/RGO composites have a maximum absorption of - 37.12 dB at 6 GHz with thickness of 3.5 mm and the effective absorption (below -10 dB) bandwidth is up to 1.92 GHz (from 5.28 to 7.2 GHz). Thus, the carbonaceous ZnO/RGO composites have great potential in the field of electromagnetic wave absorption.

        Lycium barbarum Polysaccharide Inhibits Lipid Oxidation and Protein Degradation in Tan Sheep Meatballs during Frozen Storage

        The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effectiveness of Lycium barbarum polysaccharide (LBP) on lipid oxidation and protein degradation in Tan sheep meatballs during the frozen period. The meatballs were treated with LBP at 0.01%, 0.02%, and 0.03% and stored at –18±1℃ for 0, 3, 6, 9, and 12 weeks. The effects of LBP treatment were investigated using the contents of total volatile basic nitrogen (TVB-N), texture profile (TP), thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS), colour, and pH values, compared with 0.02% butylated hydroxytoluene treatment and the blank control. The results showed that LBP treatment significantly decreased TBARS content compared with the control, which confirmed LBP to be a highly effective component in preventing lipid oxidation of Tan sheep meatballs during frozen storage, and protein degradation in Tan sheep meatballs had a significant inhibition effect because of TVB-N value reduction. In addition, the colour, TP and pH values of meatballs treated with LBP were improved dramatically. To further determine the quality changes of the blank control and all treated groups during storage, the comprehensive score evaluation equation based on principal component analysis was obtained: Y=0.51632Y1+0.29589Y2 (cumulative contribution rate=81.221%), and the 0.02% LBP-treated group had a higher comprehensive score than the other groups, and the quality of LBP-treated meatballs was better as well. In summary, LBP may reduce or inhibit lipid oxidation and protein degradation, and enhance overall quality and shelf-life in prepared meat products.
