A case for risk assessment

Risk assessment is a means of determining the ‘risk’ an offender poses in terms of future offending behavior. Against the backdrop of offenders repeating criminal acts and being reimprisoned, a case will be made here that by utilizing standardized, evidence-based risk assessment tools, an offender can be more effectively and efficiently treated and supported during the period of contact with the criminal justice system. To support this argument, this article starts with the evolution of risk assessment, and continues to describe the key model and empirical base driving this initiative, including the positive outcomes stemming from adhering to the principles of effective treatment, those of risk, need, and responsivity, as well as when using the Level of Service (LSI) instruments to predict general recidivism. While advising caution regarding instrument applicability to other populations, this review indicates that empirically-supported risk assessment tools can better service the offending client, the criminal justice professional, and the public at large.

싱가포르 여자농구에서의 외국 용병 기용에 대한 패러독스

싱가포르에서 스포츠는 언제나 교육이나 직업개발 같은 중요한 문제들에 비해 관심 밖으로 여겨져 왔다. 열악한 지원과 부족한 관심으로 인해 스포츠 전문화를 추구하고 최고로 만들기까지는 힘든 노력이 필요한 현실에, 싱가포르에서는 메달획득을 위한 빠른 해결책으로 외국선수들을 귀화시키는 방법을 선택하였다. 그러나, 싱가포르에서는 메달획득과 자국민의 자존심 사이에서 발생하는 문제가운데 외국선수들을 기용시킴에 대한 끝없는 논쟁이 계속 되고 있다. 본 연구의 목적은 특별히 싱가포르 여자농구 스포츠분야에서의 외국선수들의 기용의 모순에 대해 알아보고자 함에 있다. 문헌고찰과 자료분석이 본 연구에서 사용되었고 다양한 소스를 통해 수집된 데이터는 연구의 개념과 목적에 맞춰 컴퓨터 프로세스를 거쳤다. 결과에서는 지난 수년간 외국 선수들의 필요성에 대한 과대평가가 있었으며 습득에서의 실패들을 강조하고 있다. 본 연구는 챔피언의 위치로 가는 길은 메달을 따내는 선수들에만 국한된 것이 아니라 스포츠와 공생하고 숨쉬는 나라의 구조에 달려있으며 스포츠를 격려하는 문화가 그 길을 유지하는 가장 중요한 요소라 결론짓고 있다. Sports have always been an alternative to other undertakings such as education and career development in Singapore. It takes years of hard work and thousands of hours to be top-notch and with the lack of support and commitment from the society to pursue sports professionally, importing foreign-born athletes becomes a quick solution to inserting Singapore on the map in winning medals. However, there seems to be an endless debate over the use of foreign-born athletes in Singapore, the purpose and effectiveness of these foreign-born athletes and the disputes between winning the medal and the pride behind the win. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the inconsistencies of importing foreign-born, specifically in the Singapore Women`s basketball sporting scene. Literature reviews and content analysis was used in this study and the data collected from the various sources undergoes a computational process to allow the concepts and themes to emerge from the data. Results shows that there seems to be a brawl with the foreign sports talent scheme over the years, highlighting the overemphasis in the need of foreign-born athletes and the loopholes and failures in acquisition. This study concluded that the path to championship is more than just producing medal-winning athletes, it is the construction of a nation that lives and breathes sports so that the identification of the sporting talent comes more easily, the culture that encourages sports is the key for sustainability.

가추법으로 본 영화 속의 네러티브 분석

본 연구의 목적은 움베르토 에코의 가추법을 토대로 사실을 효과적으로 전달하는 다큐멘터리 영화의 스토리텔링 기법을 분석하는데 있다. 기존의 여러 연구 결과 중 드라마 영화나 서스펜스라는 장르에서 흔히 사용되는 더블 트랙의 역할로 영화 속에서 가속도가 붙고 있다. 본 논문은 선행연구를 바탕으로 다큐멘터리 영화 ‘Thin Blue Line’의 사례를 통하여 스토리 구조와 안에서의 가추법이 가진 역할에 대해 분석하는데 있다. The purpose of this study is to analyze the storytelling technique of a documentary film that effectively conveys the truth based on the theory of Umberto Echo's “abduction” method. Among the various existing research results, the speed of storytelling has been developed in the movie as a double-track role commonly used in the genre of drama films and suspense. This paper study analyzes the story structure of the documentary film The Thin Blue Line.

영화 춘향뎐과 방자전으로 본 문화원형과 패러디

본 연구의 목적은 문화원형 중 춘향전의 이야기가 가장 많이 패러디되고 꾸준히 사랑받아 오는 이유를 보편성으로 연구해 보고자 하는 데 있다. 춘향전은 한국의 문화원형 중 미디어 콘텐츠로 가장 많이 패러디된 러브스토리이다. 숙종을 배경으로 이야기가 펼쳐진 춘향전은 1754년 정조 시대에 춘향가로 변화한다. 이는 구비문학에서 판소리로 장르를 이동하여 기록되기 시작하였음을 의미한다. 무대와 스크린에서 새로운 콘텐츠를 끊임없이 만들어오고 있다. 영화만 하여도 남북한 합하여 300여 편이 만들어졌고 심지어 춘향이 선발대회는 1931년부터 지금까지계속되는 선발대회이다. 이렇듯 춘향전은 끊임없는 장르, 인물의 성격과 이야기 구조를 시대의 변화에 따라 겪으며한국에서 꾸준히 사랑받는 대표적인 문화원형 중 하나이다. 특히 영화 춘향전의 남녀 주인공은 그 시대의 미남미녀배우가 맡아서 연기를 해오고 있다. 춘향전이 시대를 관통하여 사랑받는 중요한 이유는 남녀 간의 사랑 이야기를 통하여 인간의 평등을 이야기하고있기 때문이다. 춘향전은 조선 시대에는 신분의 차별을 현대에는 자본주의 시대의 계급에 대하여 풍자하고 있다. 이 글에서는 2000년 임권택 감독이 연출한 춘향뎐과 2006년 김대호 감독의 방자전 패러디를 중심으로 연구하는데 인물과 이야기를 비교하여 패러디의 이론인 전복과 아이러니를 통해 분석하고 그 속의 반영된 시대정신을 우리가 추구하는 보편적인 가치로 알아보았다. Chunhyangjeon is the one of most parodied Korean cultural archetype in media contents. Thereare about 300 movies about Chunhyangjeon in South and North Korea. Originally Chunhyangjeonstarted in oral literature. Chunhyangga is the first transposition of the genre from Oral literatureto Pansory appeared in 1754 in Joseon Dynasty. It consists of an actor who sings and acts withone or several percussion accompaniments. The first Korean film was Chunhyangjeon(1923)during the Japanese colonial rule. Through modernization Chunhyangjeon recreated many mediacontents in new forms including screen and stages. Even the beauty contest the National ChunhyangPageant is held every year since 1931. Chunhyangjeon was a story that was constantly loved byKoreans back in time because it satires class conflicts and pursues equality. Usually Ironmongerythe male protagonist and Chunhyang the female protagonist are acted by a handsome andbeautiful actress of the time. In this paper I analyze characters and stores of the two movie Chunhayondeon and Bangjajeonin the view of parody. Chunhyangdeon directed by Lim Kwon-taek in 2000 is specialized fromthe perspective of representation of the form Chunhyangdeon showed a pansori performance inthe beginning and moved to movie format. Bangjajeon directed by Daewoo Kim in 2010 parodiedChunhyangjeon with a new generation of love stories in the era. In this case the conflict betweenthe new classes in capitalism. In the Bangjajeon, the servant of Mongrong, he becomes the maincharacter. He represents as a man of the public. Mongyong speaks for the mean person of theruling class. In the original story love between Chunhyang and Mongyong changed into lovetriangle among Chunhyang, Bangja and Mongyong in Bangjajeon. I research character and storystructure of two movies with irony and turnover in the perspective of reflecting the time.

Purposeless Groaning in Parkinson's Disease

Purposeless groaning has been reported in advanced progressive supranuclear palsy. We present a case of purposeless groaning occurring as a primary complaint in a patient with advanced Parkinson's disease. Purposeless groaning is thought to be a manifestation of disinhibition and perseveration, due to frontal-subcortical dysfunction. Proper recognition of this phenomenon will help clinicians to avoid unnecessary investigations and treatment. (e.g., prescription of opioid medications).

A Patient with Beta-Propeller Protein-Associated Neurodegeneration (BPAN): Treatment with Iron Chelation Therapy

We present a case of beta-propeller protein-associated neurodegeneration, a form of neurodegeneration with brain iron accumulation. The patient harbored a novel mutation in the WDR45 gene. A detailed video and description of her clinical condition are provided. Her movement disorder phenomenology was characterized primarily by limb stereotypies and gait dyspraxia. The patient’s disability was advanced by the time iron-chelating therapy with deferiprone was initiated, and no clinical response in terms of cognitive function, behavior, speech, or movements were observed after one year of treatment.
