Lichen as Bioindicators: Assessing their Response to Heavy Metal Pollution in Their Native Ecosystem

Lichens play crucial roles in the ecosystems, contributing to soil formation and nutrientcycling, and being used in biomonitoring efforts to assess the sustainability of ecosystemsincluding air quality. Previous studies on heavy metal accumulation in lichens have mostlyrelied on manipulated environments, such as transplanted lichens, leaving us with a dearthof research on how lichens physiologically respond to heavy metal exposure in their naturalhabitats. To fill this knowledge gap, we investigated lichens from two of South Korea’s geographicallydistant regions, Gangwon Province and Jeju Island, and examined whether differencein ambient heavy metal concentrations could be detected through physiologicalvariables, including chlorophyll damage, lipid oxidation, and protein content. The physiologicalvariables of lichens in response to heavy metals differed according to the collectionarea: Arsenic exerted a significant impact on chlorophyll degradation and protein content. The degree of fatty acid oxidation in lichens was associated with increased Cu concentrations. Our research highlights the value of lichens as a bioindicator, as we found that evensmall variations in ambient heavy metal concentrations can be detected in natural lichens. Furthermore, our study sheds light on which physiology variables that can be used as indicatorsof specific heavy metals, underscoring the potential of lichens for future ecologystudies.
Searching for Antibacterial Materials to Extend the Shelf Life of Salted Fish

Natural seasonings are the recent trend in food industry to replace the synthesized seasonings due to consumer preference. However, unexpected results may occur in terms of sensory evaluation and physico-chemical properties such as reduced flavor and color change by adding natural seasoning. In this study, by evaluating and comparing the antioxidant and antibacterial activities of 10 marine algae extracts, we tried to find a marine alga extract that helps to extend the shelf life of salted pollack roe which also can be applied as a functional material with antibacterial activity. Among tested species, in DPPH free radical scavenging activity and total polyphenols content, Ecklonia cava and Gracilaria verrucosa extracts showed significant antioxidant activity and in paper disc diffusion, MIC and MBC tests, Ecklonia cava, Codium flagile and Gracilaria verrucosa extracts showed significant antibacterial activity. Based on the current results, marine algae extracts were suggested to help to extend the shelf life of salted pollack roe acting as functional materials with antioxidant and antibacterial activities.

Artemisia scoparia is an annual grass belonging to the family Asteraceae, distributed in Eurasia, and is a kind of halophyte that grows wild in salt marshes. A. scoparia has been used as anti-hepatitis, diuretic and anti-inflammatory ingredient in folk medicine. Physiological activities such as antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties of flavonoids and coumarin compounds isolated from A. scoparia have been reported. In this study, the inhibitory effect of A. scoparia on melanogenesis was investigated using its crude extract and solvent fractions (n-hexane, 85% aq. MeOH, n-BuOH and H₂O). Among the solvent fractions obtained from crude extract of A. scoparia, n-hexane and 85% aq. MeOH were the most effective samples in terms of anti-melanogenesis activity. Anti-melanogenic effect of n-hexane and 85% aq. MeOH fractions were confirmed in α-MSH-induced B16F10 melanoma cells via measuring inhibition of the melanogenesis-related factors. Based on the results of this study, it is suggested that A. scoparia has potential to be used as a cosmetic ingredient with melanogenesis inhibitory effects.

TDX-1A 전자 교환기를 고장 진단하는 전문가 시스템의 지식 베이스의 구축시 지식표현 Paradigm의 결정이 매우 중요하다. 그러므로 여러 지식표현 Paradigm을 비교 평가하여, 문제영역에 적합한 지식 표현 방식을 제시한다. 본 논문에서는 시스템의 구조와 기능 표현에 기반을 둔 고장 진단 모델과 지식 표현 방식을 사용하여 지식베이스를[1] 구현한 결과 새롭게 돌출된 문제점을 분석하고, 이에 대한 해결 방안으로써 지식의 범주에 따라 다른 지식표현을 이용하여 효율적인 진단 지식베이스를 구축할 수 있는 복수 지식표현 방식을 제시한다.
