Biological activities and application of sanguisorbae officinalis L. were investigated. In the enzymological physiological activities, the electron donating ability(EDA) was 54.92% in 10 ppm and it was over 90% over 50ppm and SOD-like activity was high as 65.36% in 1000 ppm, it was gradual increased. As inhibitory effect of xanthine oxidase, it was 17.90% in 200 ppm and a little low as 36.89% in 500 ppm and inhibitory effect of tyrosinase, it was a little low as 20.45% below 1000 ppm. As the result of measuring the lipid oxidation, all the concentrations of medical ion treatments had the ability to keep it from acidification and metal ion blocking effects about the lipid oxidation promoting factors(Fe^(2+) and Cu^(2+)), Fe^(2+) was better than Cu^(2+) and all concentrations of medical ion treatments was 40% in 50ppm. When it was applied into normal skin-softener it showed safe effect so that we can expect that as the natural material of cosmetics.

Biological activities and anticarcinogenicity of Korean Pear peel were investigated. Electron donating activity and superoxide dismutase(SOD)-like activity of fraction Ⅱ, Ⅲ were up to 90% and 50-60% at 50ppm, respectively. Inhibitory effects on xanthine oxidase were about 80% at 50ppm, breast adenocarcinoma was about 60% at 2,000 ppm, higher Ⅲ than Ⅱ. Inhibitory effect on prostate adenocarcinoma was about 23% at 500 ppm. In conclusion, Korean Pear peel was expected to use as a functional material.

Objectives : Impaired processing of facial information is one of the broad ranges of cognitive deficits seen in patients with Schi-zophrenia. We aimed to elucidate the differences in brain activities involved in the process of facial working memory between schizophrenic patients and healthy comparison subjects. Methods : Twelve patients with schizophrenia were recruited along with twelve demographically matched healthy volunteers as a comparison group. Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) was used to assess cortical activities during the Perfor-mance of a 2-back working memory paradigm using images of neutral faces as mnemonic content. Rcsults : The patient group performed the tasks with reduced accuracy. Group analysis revealed that the left fusiform gyrus, the right superior frontal gyrus, the bilateral middle frontal gyri/insula, the left middle temporal gyrus, the precuneus, the quadrangular lobules and the vermis of cerebellum showed decreased cortical activities in the patient group. On the other hand, an increased level of activation in the lateral prefrontal cortex and the pahetal lobule was observed from the patient group, all in the right hemisphere. Conulusion : A decreased level of activity in the left fusiform gyrus among the patient group implicates inefficient processing of facial information. An increased level of activation in prefrontal and parietal neural networks from the patient group confirms earlier findings on the impaired working memory of patients with schizophrenia.

New lectins have been isolated and purified from mung bean(Phaseolus radiatus) through physiological saline extraction, ammonium sulfate salt fractionation and column chro-matographies. Ion exchanger were eluted by linear salt gradient and then further purified through gel filtration. Thus obtained lectin named as MBL. The gene expressions of 5 cytokines(IL-1, IL-2, IL-6, TNF-α and IFN-?) from human peripheral blood mononuclear cells(PBMC) stimulated with MBL were investigated by using reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction(RT-PCR). PBMC(1×106cells/㎖) isolated from healthy volunteers were stimulated with lectins(4㎎/㎖) for various time intervals(1 to 96 hrs). After each of the various stimulated times, total RNA was isolated and assessed for different cytokines mRNA by RT-PCR. The mRNA encoding IL-1, IL-2 were detected continuously from 1 to 20 hrs, and IL-6 was detected up to 24 hrs. But the mRNA encoding IFN-r and TNF-α were detected to 8 hours only and showed short time response com-pared with other cytokines. The significant expression of all cytokines mRNA were observed at 4 hrs. These results suggested that MBL, as inducer of cytokines could elicit detectable cytokine mRNA from PBMC.
CASE REPORT : Remote Postoperative Epidural Hematoma after Brain Tumor Surgery

A postoperative epidural hematoma (EDH) is a serious and embarrassing complication, which usually occurs at the site of operation after intracranial surgery. However, remote EDH is relatively rare. We report three cases of remote EDH after brain tumor surgery. All three cases seemed to have different causes of remote postoperative EDH; however, all patients were managed promptly and showed excellent outcomes. Although the exact mechanism of remote postoperative EDH is unknown, surgeons should be cautious of the speed of lowering intracranial pressure and implement basic procedures to prevent this hazardous complication of brain tumor surgery.
A flexible pentacene thin film transistors as disposable DNA hybridization sensor

We fabricated a disposable DNA hybridization sensor using pentacene thin film transistors (TFTs) on flexible substrate. The analytes, 100-mer ss-DNA (poly A and poly T) or 100 bp ds-DNA were immobilized directly on the surface of the pentacene layer, thereby producing a dramatic change in the electrical properties of the devices. The electrical characteristics of devices were studied as a function of DNA immobilization conditions, DNA concentrations and between ss- and ds-DNA. Based on these results, we propose a disposable label-free sensor for DNA hybridization through direct measurement of electrical properties by the immobilization of DNA on flexible pentacene TFTs.

Fractures of the tibia are one of the most common injury encountered by orthopaedic surgeons and their treatments are considered to be difficult due to serious complications. Many treatment modalities were introduced. Among them, Ender nailing is considered one of the useful modality because it is a relatively simple and, less invasive procedure. Authors analized l23 tibial fractures treated with Endr nails from Feb. 1986 to Feb. 1992 to solve the problems during Ender nailing. The follow up ranged from 12months to 57 months with an average of 17 months. The results are as follows; l. Among 123 patients, 93 cases are male and 30 cases are female. Traffic accident is the most common cause of injury. 2. Average interval from injury to operation is 9 days and average 2.7 Ender nails are used. The mean duration of the bone union is 19.1 weeks. 3. To prevent knee joint pain, more distal medial and lateral portal of entry and more posteriorly located lateral portal of entry were used. 4. To provide stability of distal 1/3 fracture, 3 or more nails are introduced with fanning in AP and lateral plane. 5. to provide stability of the comminuted fractures, convexities of at least 2 nails are located at the comminuted site. 6. To prevent rotation of the middle fragments of segmental fractures, technique of temporary Steinmann pin fixation for handling the middle fragment during operation were used.
Experiences of Bifrontal Interhemispheric Approach in Craniopharyngioma Surgery

Objective : The purpose of this study is to evaluate the surgical outcomes of bifrontal interhemispheric[BIH] approach and compare them to those of the pterional approach for the treatment of craniopharyngioma. Methods : Seventeen patients had their first operation for the resection of craniopharyngiomas between 2000 and 2004 at our medical center. Eleven patients who had the pterional approach and 6 with the BIH approach were enrolled. The age range at the time of surgery was 5 to 80 years [mean age 35.6 years old]. The presenting symptoms were visual disturbance increased intracranial pressure in 5 patients. Results : The tumors were totally removed in 3 [27 %] and subtotally in 8 [73 %] patients with the pterional approach. Total tumor removal was achieved in 5 out of 6 [83%] patients by the BIH approach, except improved in 4 [36 %] patients treated with the pterional approach and in all patients treated by the BIH approach. Conclusion : The BIH approach for craniopharyngioma surgery may be an effective and safe approach for tumors that extend outside of the sellar-suprasellar region with acceptable outcomes.
